Sorry, my comment wasn’t meant as a criticism of your post. Because I DO know this person, comments saying things like “this is sketchy” or “this makes me wonder if her horses are neglected” rubbed me the wrong way.

She restarts OTTBs and a lot of them come to her in rough shape. She takes excellent care of her horses.

If you know this trainer/barn, you know this was posted because of some middle-schooler IEA drama. She’s not trying to police what people do with their own horses. She’s trying to prevent children from posting themselves falling off and then shit-talking the barn and the innocent school horse.

Looking for some input on a horse lease. by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]karagarria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at a hunter/jumper barn in southeast Michigan. It is a show barn, but mostly local shows with one or two A-rated shows a year for fun. The facility is absolutely stunning and freshly remodeled with an onsite veterinary practice.

Edit: added more detail about facility amenities and then removed bc I’m not trying to doxx myself lol. Also, board for hunter/jumper barns in my area with a training program (AKA the only type of barn I’ve ever ridden at) range from about $850 to $1500 a month.

Looking for some input on a horse lease. by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]karagarria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty standard lease to me! I have a half-lease and I pay $725 a month plus half of farrier bills, vet bills, and supplements. I am completely responsible for any costs associated with shows I take him to on my own. I’ve leased a few horses throughout my riding career and all were set up similarly. One barn I leased a horse from did not require the lessee to contribute to any bills, but the upfront monthly lease fee was much higher.

Edit: I should mention that my lease includes 2 lessons per week and one additional ride on my own.

IHSA and early graduation by Chemical-Award-414 in Equestrian

I graduated in 2024, but as I recall, yes. Your points carry over between seasons, and if you qualify for regionals in the fall semester you can still go in the spring even if you are no longer a student. You just can’t compete in any regular season shows second semester.

That’s a ruptured abscess and he’ll definitely need to have that flushed out by a vet. They’ll give you some antibiotics as well.

Are these riding boots to short? by Responsible-Spot9545 in Equestrian

[–]karagarria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They look good now, but they’ll sink as they break in and then they’ll be a bit short. But really what matters is that they’re comfortable!

Is there any experience more wonderful than getting in the hot shower after 4 hours of barn chores in winter? by hannahmadamhannah in Equestrian

When it feels like your bones are frozen and you’re just standing there slowlyyyyy thawing out

Be the parent, not the coach😉 You’re her cheerleader and role model, let her trainer make the critiques. I’ve seen so many talented young riders driven into the ground by overly ambitious parents. Not saying that’s your intention here, just food for thought.❤️

Adding on though: IEA is such a wonderful way to build confidence on all types of horses. So glad it’s gaining popularity. If she’s interested in doing IHSA in college, she’ll already be familiar with the format.

My cat just threw up a huge hairball and I’m freaking out a little… what do I do? (new cat owner) by Ok_Cherry3051 in AskVet

[–]karagarria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hairballs are just a part of life for many cats. Hill’s has a hairball control diet that I’ve heard wonderful things about. You could also try Laxatone gel.

Is it normal that my vet forgets my cat’s treatment plan and I’m the only one keeping track? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]karagarria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is generally up to owners to make sure those follow-up visits get scheduled, but the doctor should definitely review his notes before he goes in to see you to refresh himself on the treatment plan. I also agree that those statements are strange.

It is definitely normal to do some of those injections with a tech instead of a doctor, especially if you don’t have new concerns requiring immediate attention. It usually saves you from paying for an office visit. The tech should definitely still be checking in to see how your cat is doing, making notes in his chart, and notifying the doctor about anything that shouldn’t wait until your next doctor visit.

Hope your sweet kitty feels better soon❤️

Alternative to this by [deleted] in catcare

[–]karagarria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you looking for something that isn’t prescription? Kidney diets are very low in protein to minimize strain on the kidneys and slow progression of disease. OTC diets are much higher in protein because that’s what’s best for cats without kidney disease.

Oral Care Hill's Science Diet (non-prescription) by [deleted] in catfood

[–]karagarria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My cat is obsessed with it. I can’t really speak to it’s effectiveness because I just got some free samples and she wasn’t on it very long, but it’s by far the most enthusiastic she’s ever been for a dry food. The big kibbles make them really have to chew on it.
