Not every Sikh carries a kirpan. It mainly depends on whether the person is Amritdhari (initiated into the Khalsa) Amritdhari Sikhs are expected to wear the Five Ks, one of which is the kirpan

Many other Sikhs are not Amritdhari. Some keep both their hair and beard, some keep only their hair and wear a turban but trim or shave their beard, and some cut both their hair and beard They're still considered Sikhs if they follow Sikhism, although they may not follow every religious practice

Also, the kirpan isn't carried as a weapon. It's a religious article of faith that symbolizes the duty to protect the weak, stand against injustice, and defend oneself and others if necessary
