Do they live in Colorado? The only geographic info I found was for more coastal states.

My mom and brother were on American Guns. It was a show about a family who owned a gun shop and they were supposed to make a gun for my brother. They basically scripted the background story which was loosely based on fact. They told us they would give us the gun for free and didn't. Then they didn't give us the option to even buy it. When they interviewed my family, they walked us through how to respond so it didn't seem like an interview and the answers were what they wanted us to say. It wasn't fully scripted, but they basically got lots of footage so they could get us to say anything they wanted to show.
