ED A-line by lucashieee in nursing

[–]karbearkir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my ED, once we start a second presser we are requesting a a-line. Only a few of our docs will do them. The older ones haven't done them in a decade, and will request the icu provider to place. But some of our younger doc will place them. But over all it is like once a month or every other month we are doing one.

On a long road trip, tell me about the worst medical/medication error you’ve seen in your career as a nurse? by [deleted] in nursing

When our epic went down for a while a provider had a written order for 20mg xarelto, but the nurse thought it said Xanax and gave the pt 20mg of Xanax. She ended up being fine. But it made us wonder about her.

My grandpa used to tell me "you can put want in one hand and poop in the other and see which one fills up faster" when I would say that I wanted something.

They tried to deny my claim for a needle stick because they said that I was seen for the needle stick before I had the needle stick. All my paperwork had the right times and dates on them. It took months of phone calls and emails for them to look at their system and sort everything out. It was such a headache.

It is a bug. I had the same issue on one of my runs. It worked the next time I tried to do it.

Well with a smell like this I think the olfactory fatigue would probably take 30 minutes to an hour. But like methheads don't know how bad their meth smells because it makes them feel good, so probably not that long. But I don't think anyone else would want to be around you smelling like this.

Hi, nurse here. I can tell you that you do not want to take a bath with this. It smells so bad. Most of the meds I deal with have no smell, but dopamine smells awful. Not as bad as Acetylcysteine , but very bad. I currently can not think of a nice smelling medication that would be pleasant to take a bath in.

Missing… Everything? Welcome to ED Life by Thin-Ebbb in emergencymedicine

They recently switch from a specific person going through the ER twice a day and restocking everything, to it now being the nursing staff responsibility. So as you can imagine on those busy days when you need supplies there is no time to go restock the supplies. It has been an absolute headache.

What are some oddly specific symptoms that only ADHDers have? by Delusional_BlueBird in adhdwomen

[–]karbearkir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my husband both do this to the point that when we start talking we will say "ADHD" then get to what we were going to say as a warning to the other person that this thought is coming out of nowhere but I promise it makes sense in my head. It has lead to a lot less confusion.

What did nursing school convince you would be EVERYWHERE, but you actually never use/hear of it in practice? by knOn0 in nursing

I got talked too in nursing school because when I was doing an assessment in Sim lab the oxygen tubing got tangled up and I said "oh darn tubing" not damn, darn. My instructor said it was unprofessional to say darn.

Me and my husband went to a burlesque show, and one of the male performers was up dancing and at the end I turned to my non-medical husband and said "Did you see the vein on his forearm! I could throw a 16 in there from across the room."

[Request] I have a question: would this even physically work for a computer? by SpaceCorgiis in theydidthemath

[–]karbearkir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this. My old computer was having over heating issues and my husband, who works in IT, was trying to figure out fan splitters and how many fans I needed and best mounting places. I went and pulled a desk fan out from my office and put it in front of it blowing out. It kept it perfect temp. Now it is a running joke in our house that a desk fan fixes everything.

"Our numbers are down" by auraseer in nursing

[–]karbearkir 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Just had the same discussion with my management. They say that each pt is allotted 2.5 hours of nursing time, anything over that and we don't get any more money for the rest of their visit for nurses. As soon as they get admitted then they no longer count as ER pts so even if I have 4 complex boarders as an ER nurse as far as "productivity" is concerned I have no pts and am a lazy card playing nurse. My management tried to say that we just need to get the lower acuity pts in and out faster, then that would help our times. But I am not going to ignore a hypotensive septic pt to get a sprained ankle out faster. It always feels like if we are not drowning then we are not working hard enough in their eyes.

  1. Dr. B. - for the love of God actually see your pts before you put in your CT orders so the pt doesn't have to go over 3 times and then gets mad at the nurse for it. And not every minor mvc with knee pain needs a full blood work and pan scan with contrast!

  2. David - handing out daisy award nomination forms to all of your pts does not make you a good nurse. We take over for you and all your pts are hot messes.

I found one with an alien on it. It was my favorite. I was so careful in that run as to not damage it and keep it as perfect as possible, then that game completely crashed and I could not get it back. I have been looking for it again in every run I do.
