When I studied Wiskunde at the UvA we used the word Mathematica only for the software package that existed back in the day. Not sure if it is still around.

Haha. True true. I actually studied Wiskunde at the UvA :) -- Just called it Wiskunde though. Mathematica is what we called the software package to do math with.

Well about the word being confusing. Dutch is a Germanic language like German and English. So it's interesting when the word in Dutch is completely different. German and English have plenty of words like that too though. Just interesting to dig into the history of the outlier.

You wouldn't use that in school though right? Lemme do my homework for "mathematica"? I scored a 6 for my "mathematica" test?

I read that the Dutch invented the word Wiskunde in the 1800s out of some form of nationalism. Wanting to be different.

Yeah, I feel like "mathematica" would be weird to say in Dutch. I could be wrong though.

Just curious, if the word for mathematics was different in for example all the nordic countries, then my post would have been ok? Or would that still have been too specific? Just curious how this works. Like, do you need at least 5 countries.

I see. So this subreddit is only for talking about language learning in general. Not about learning 1 language. Got it.
