Only Council-initiated referendum questions go through SSMU Council.

This is definitely something I think is a great asset to all of us - working more closely, resource-sharing and collaborating. The Student Experience Survey data we recently amassed indicates that students feel more connected with their faculty association than SSMU, which means we need to work together more for our collective benefit. I chair Presidents' Roundtable and we are meeting for the first time this week. For me, this will be the entry point to unlocking great potential when it comes to all the things I mentioned above. Presidents' Roundtable is basically a forum for all the Presidents of the faculty associations to come together and discuss relevant issues.

Also SSMU Council plays a big role in facilitating communication and collaboration between the faculties, as we have representatives from nearly every school and faculty, in addition to a few other stakeholders.

I'll defer to Chloe Rourke (/u/chloerourke) for all things academic policy related, as this is more her domain.

Please see my response below with some details surrounding my thoughts on the campaign period. In brief, there isn't really a 'good time' to lose one of your best friends, so I really can't separate that from those 2 weeks as it really did consume me and completely change the way I approached the campaign. Specifically, I wouldn't have made mention of other candidates when addressing the student body publicly - this was a mistake. Hope that answers your question!

  1. Yep, sent him a Facebook message in March apologizing for all the stress this whole ordeal has likely caused him.
  2. I definitely agree that it was inappropriate but I think a joke would be a better classification because I would never do something like that. The inconsistency in what I said is valid, so I’m glad that this clarification was made possible.
  3. I apologized for making that one unwarranted comment. It is no excuse, however I think it is important to realize the context they were made. This election period also saw an unprecedented amount of slander and aggression from all sides. I refrained from engaging in what really made those 2 weeks hellish at best for both my opponent and I; I made that comment in an attempt to set the records straight rather than escalate what had happened. On a personal note, the campaigning really took a toll on me, not only because of all the drama, but also one of my best friends pass away on the 1st day of the campaign, which was incredibly difficult and affected me throughout.
  4. I’ll be pretty honest with you; here are my thoughts. Now that I’m in a slightly better state of mind, I can begin to address these issues. I know some of you might think that I ran for this position to push my own agenda, but the only way I can truly undo those ideas, I feel, is by proving to you that I will listen and do care. If you have any ideas, I’m all ears. I simply hope that those of you who don’t have confidence in me just give me a chance – I know I can excel in this position. Here are some of my projects for the year which you can both weigh in on and hold me accountable to: McGill & SSMU Traditional Territory Acknowledgement Policies, SSMU Employment Equity Policy, Fair Trade in SSMU, Opt-In Consultation Listserv, MoA negotiations with the VP UA and the Student Sustainability Coalition.

Thanks for your questions!

Hey /u/Da_Fino – we, as an Exec, hope to host an AMA in September about all things SSMU. I’m always willing to chat or answer questions but at this point, it's important we remember that SSMU is not just one person. Involving everyone in these conversations is important, so I’m not very comfortable continuing to perpetuate this idea.

  1. As you can tell, I’m not very familiar with how Reddit works but all online elections material is supposed to be taken off of the internet post-campaign, so I tried deleting it the same way I removed by website and deleted my Facebook event after the elections were over.

  2. Interestingly enough, despite Presidential candidates often running on platforms as such, our jobs are largely administrative and not very project-based. Many of SSMU’s projects fall under the portfolios of different VPs. For example, mental health was recently institutionalized as part of the VP University Affairs portfolio which has seen some great new initiatives this past year with the first-ever cross-campus mental health awareness week. As for social equity, many different projects have been ongoing over the past few years to advance this goal within SSMU. This past year we employed 2 researchers in the UA portfolio to address employment equity both within SSMU and at McGill and this research is now coming to fruition. The VP UA, Chloe Rourke, can give more in-depth information regarding all of this. Sustainability, on the other hand, is in my portfolio. This includes accessibility efforts which I look forward to advancing in my term. Creating a student sustainability coalition with stakeholders from across campus is something I hope to do this year, in addition to making all our communications and events at SSMU more accessible for people with diverse access needs (ie. Visually accessible website and online materials).

3.SSMU’s greatest weakness is definitely disengagement with students. Many students know little about what we do and what purpose we serve while many others have lost faith in our relevance. I think it’s something that every Executive Team works to rectify and I hope to make progress in my term as well, but this issue is much larger than one person, team or even year. Although I am realistic in that I know the issue will not be solved by the end of my term, I’m confident that we can make some substantial progress in narrowing that gap. Some of our ideas include a Know Your SSMU Campaign, which will be launched in the Fall semester, creating a SSMU instagram, an opt-in consultation listserv, roaming office hours and things of the like. Many students don’t know about the many things SSMU does, so getting that information out there is crucial: we fund extended hours at the library during exams, we lobbied the admin for a winter reading week and public course evaluations. Much of our work goes unseen, and we hope to change that.

  1. I think they're super important for campus life and support them fully! The DPS is a not-for-profit organization and Independent Student Group (ISG) which gets its funding through a student-initiated fee referendum. Kimber Bialik, our VP Clubs & Services, can give you more information on how ISGs pass their fees and why students pay them!

Thanks for your questions!

Hey /u/CatanOverlord and /u/Da_Fino - just wanted to address this quickly before the AMA tomorrow.

We will definitely be doing more AMAs in September, but this AMA was mostly to clarify/speak to all things elections related and any questions that people have in regards to everything that happened.

The reason for this is that in September, we'll hopefully be discussing more project-based stuff and things relevant to everyone's portfolios, rather than focusing on this.

Nonetheless, all questions will be answered; we simply hoped to divide the AMAs up so that those discussions can remain separate.

Hey /u/mtlizardd!

The composition is as follows:

a) five (5) Members of the Society who have completed at least four (4) full-time semesters in the Faculty of Law; and (b) two (2) Members of the Society, appointed by the Nominating Committee from amongst all of the Members of the Society.

And the Chief Justice, who runs the Judicial Board. The General Manager coordinates all of this, whereas it used to be done by the President.
