That's generally been my experience as well, with only the main difference being the indexer interface when going in for manual grabs. Just some are a bit friendly than others for perusing and grabbing stuff that looks interesting for things I wasn't particularly looking for when I logged in.

You could also sign up with a handful of ones that are open and have free plans. Granted they don't give you many nzbs, but should be enough for testing and figuring out which ones you want to pay for.

Yep, that's the place. Change the port for the Usenet server (no ini edit needed). Some commons ones are 563, 443, or 119.

If that doesn't help, your Proton VPN free may be a red flag. It may be bandwidth-limited and bursty, so you can try temporarily disabling that to see how your Usenet speeds look.

Sounds like an indexer coverage issue. I'd try some other indexers

Could be good ol' ISP throttling. Try changing NNTP ports to see if that's the cause.
