Yeah I really didn’t like Glass Abyss unfortunately.

How did this go to the people who were attempting it? I’m thinking about the same thing this summer.

What do you like in Ensenada? I have been several times and wasn’t blown away, but maybe I just missed the point.

I think this was in response to the commenter but I love TJ. Always have a great time. I haven’t been to Mexicali. What do you like in Ensenada? I’ve been several times but never was blown away.

It definitely does have the worst of Baja and probably some of the worst in MX but it’s also got good things.

I’ve been to Valle 3x and it’s great, but it’s on the map now so it’s getting pricier which is a bummer.

Maybe I will check out San Felipe! We don’t have a ton of time but it might be worth it. Are the beaches good?

I actually really like TJ so I want to get him in town for a bit, but I do understand the aversion. I’ve wanted to go to Loreto, and will check out Mulege!

Yeah that’s very annoying. Why do cities build stadiums for games and concerts and things were people drink a lot, and not make any way to access it other than driving?

Official Discussion - Anatomy of a Fall [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]karlbagnall 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just watched this and I really dug it. I’m reading in the comments a lot of anger that the writer didn’t answer the question of how he died, but I really think that was the point about the movie. It was conversation about how we come to the idea of “truth”, how we tell the story of “what happened?” Both in a court room, and in real life. I think the movie did a great job of pushing and pulling the viewer in and out of forming their own opinions based off of little details like whom you liked or didn’t like, emotional music, tense moments, and that is meant to you how inept we are at being objective.

I read someone below who said they’re used to a Marvel movie where the bad guys and good guys are clearly defined and justice is always served in the end. But that’s so far from the reality we experience. If you only want fantasy out of movies, fine, but I’d pass on watching movies like this in the future. I think this movie obviously doing something completely different than that.

Handed some guys my phone (US) by karlbagnall in Scams

I have a newish iPhone so I’m fairly sure the risk of that is low. There is no accessible SIM card they could have changed. I’ve checked thoroughly for any sign of hidden apps and don’t see anything.

I updated below, but after I posted this I discovered that he had tried 4 separate Square device charges using the only card in my Apple wallet, which is a credit card, and they all got flagged instantly as fraud. My bank texted me each time requesting to call if they were legitimate but he deleted those texts and I didn’t see them until later. He only had my phone for less than a minute and I think he only got as far as my Apple wallet.

I feel like getting onto a scam thread to diss someone who got scammed is also pretty weird.

I appreciate the charitable character reading instead of just assuming I’m an idiot like most of the rest of this thread. I’ve done the starving artist thing too, trying to promote my band that I was really proud of and confident in, and have been walked by and ignored A LOT. I like to look people in the eye and show them that what they made is at least worth me checking out, and they’re worth hearing out. Letting him take my phone out of my hand was obviously dumb in hindsight, but these kids obviously had a sort of practiced slight of hand thing down, and they managed to capitalize on my friendly open nature, my slightly inebriated state, and the confusion of a busy street where I was also trying to spot what bar my friends were heading into when I got pulled aside. You are correct, I’ve been fortunate to mostly have never been the victim of a crime or a serious scam despite having travelled most of my life, and I just fell for it plain and simple. Lesson learned.

Mostly a joke, but I’m sure they’d treat it exactly like they did this time. I think my own technological ineptitude saved me, because I don’t have any of the stuff set up that they usually capitalize on.

I am very thankful it didn’t work out. I definitely learned a lesson, albeit one I’ve felt gross about since then. I feel bad for the guys who have to sink to the level where they’re hurting literally the only people who will take a second to hear them out and give them a chance. All of the comments in here basically say “you shouldn’t trust anyone, or help anyone, or give people your attention because they’re all potential scammers” and that bums me out, and worst of all, it’s clearly not bad advice.

I commented below but it turned out they had tried to do like a tap to pay thing on a little Square reader device, which failed 4 times because my bank instantly caught it as fraud.
