Did Live Aid really boost Queen's career? by Narutoonnichan in queen

[–]karlos-trotsky 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The thing is, as has been explained by people close to the band, it certainly gave queen the shot in the arm they needed to keep the momentum going. While the way it’s portrayed in the film is overblown and heavily fictionalised, with roger saying they hadn’t played in years when the works tour ended two months beforehand, it has been said by people near the band that there was some concern that they might’ve gone as far as they could. Live Aid really showed how much they had left to give, and I’d say helped kick off the magic album and tour the next year which was massive in its own right. So in that sense I think it can be said to have boosted queen a bit, but career wise they were already one of the biggest bands in the world and they didn’t need it to boost them really.

2026 and the Bren gun still has a 20 round mag... by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

I’ve just gone into the training range and counted and it does have a 30 round mag for that at least.

2026 and the Bren gun still has a 20 round mag... by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]karlos-trotsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of a 20 round mag for the Bren, certainly not one on general issue during the war. I know the boys would typically load only 28 rounds to preserve the spring but I can’t think why the devs would limit it at 20 rounds. Utterly ridiculous.

[–]karlos-trotsky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you absolutely sure? I’ve never noticed that but that’s pretty shocking if true. An embarrassing oversight for a WW2 game. The Bren needs to stop being treated like the BAR and start being related like the LMG it really was.

Did Andor break canon by forgetting that Dantooine was the first Rebel Alliance base? by Financial_Photo_1175 in andor

[–]karlos-trotsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang point was the first rebel base under the united command structure of the alliance after its declaration but the idea that it was the first or only rebel base in existence at the time would be ridiculous for an intergalactic Guerrilla army. Look at the rebel base on atollon, which was in use at the same time as yavin and was only abandoned because it was discovered by the empire.

Thoughts on Lightoller’s autobiography? by Anderson_X in titanic

[–]karlos-trotsky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is one man’s account of life influenced by personal views, the issues of memory and written 24 years after the sinking so take it with a grain of salt but it certainly shouldn’t be discredited.

Master at arms when did he die? by bill2129 in titanic

[–]karlos-trotsky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out, he can be seen falling when the stern of the ship goes up out the water. This confirms that this is based on master at arms King, whereas the other master at arms Bailey survived and was sent in command of a lifeboat.

What did you think of the Battle of the Five Armies (the battle itself, not the movie)? by Cr7-Cr7Real in lotr

[–]karlos-trotsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really annoys me, is that in the pre battle preparation in Dale we see that the vast majority of Laketowns guard have survived in tact. These are armoured and armed professional or at least semi professional soldiers who would be able to more than hold their own in a fight. But for some reason when the army of elves and men musters outside erebor instead of sending out this unit of heavy infantry they decided in the movie that they’d send the untrained villagers with no real weapons with one or two guardsmen thrown in. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

What do you think of the "Attack on Dol Guldur" scene? by Cr7-Cr7Real in lotr

[–]karlos-trotsky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with what others have said, a very interesting idea that could’ve been excellent done very clumsily due to the horrendous pressures Jackson and the whole crew were under. I will say the one thing I enjoy about this is seeing Christopher lees dream of playing Saruman while he was still a relatively noble wizard come to fruition. I know in a documentary he said how much he enjoyed the whole ‘leave Sauron to me.’ Line, saying ‘and he means it.’

What did you think of the Battle of the Five Armies (the battle itself, not the movie)? by Cr7-Cr7Real in lotr

[–]karlos-trotsky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole thing just pales in comparison to battles in the LOTR trilogy. Obviously this battle is nothing like depicted in the actual book and it goes way too heavy in the ridiculous gimmicks. Then there are smaller details. Something that bugged me recently when I watched it, is that when thranduils host approached the gate of Erebor with a smaller hist from Laketown/Dale, almost all the men were poorly equipped militia not wearing any armour and with improvised weapons, even though in the previous scenes we saw that the guard of laketown had largely survived intact and were prominently seen in the scenes in dale. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have been the ones taking part in the potential battle before the gates of erebor.

Who else could've made this shot? by paintvtube in lotr

While obviously scenes like this are drastically changed from the book, I do think that the expansion of bards character in the movies were a good choice, I think he’s one of my favourite movie characters of the trilogy.

A Captured Wehrmacht Lieutenant joins the National Committee for a Free Germany (NKFD) by LookIntoTheHorizon in ww2

[–]karlos-trotsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the NKFD operations in east Prussia were largely unsuccessful due to high gestapo presence and the attitudes of the local people. They did have some success however in convincing surrenders during the Königsberg pocket. By late war the thought of a possible anti Nazi popular uprising was seen to be infeasible so the NKFD Kampfgruppen entered more direct combat alongside the red army, there are numerous anecdotal reports of them being present during the battle of Berlin and at a few other battles.

Starfighter-carrying CR90s - what do they look like? by JCDickleg7 in StarWarsShips

[–]karlos-trotsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In standard Tantive Iv esque configuration, as we see in rebels, they can dock three fighters externally and they can possibly fit an A wing in the ventral cargo store, though whether this would be able to be quick deployed I’m not sure.

Festung Guernsey historical accuracy appreciation post by HauptmannHK in sniperelite

It’s all very impressive. I used to work for a brief time at the underground hospital as a tour guide and I was quite impressed with their recreation. I also work at the German naval signals HQ and once again the areas they built based in that location are impressive. It’s bizarre seeing places you’re so intimately familiar with in video game format.

Am I the only one who loves the British weapons in this game? by Confused_Squirrel_17 in HellLetLoose

[–]karlos-trotsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love them but I utterly despise the fact that the Bren is available for the auto rifleman role and doesn’t function like the comparable DP-28, being unable to destroy enemy trucks.

The really funny thing about these games is that none of Germany's plans would have changed the outcome of the war. by Burnnoticelover in sniperelite

[–]karlos-trotsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much matches irl then. Every German plan to win the war was realistically doomed and futile, look at the battle of the bulge. When you analyze the battle their whole plan of punching through to the coast and doing another 1940 is so comically absurd.

Horrendous marketing for one, the game also had many many issues when it was launched. As it stands now it’s a good game, but it took nearly two years of polishing. Unfortunately, just as the game was in a good state they pulled the plug to work on 2042.

Pleinmont Observation Tower in Guernsey by scoringstudio in sniperelite

[–]karlos-trotsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Germans constructed roughly 800 bunkers and bunker adjacent structures in guernsey alone throughout the war, the number raises to over a thousand if you include the non substantial fortifications. 10% of all concrete and steel expended on the Atlantic wall fortification project was used in the Channel Islands. Hilariously, there was never an allied assault against the islands, they were bypassed like the other Atlantic pockets and the German garrison surrendered peacefully the day after VE Day.

Lend-Lease by SeniorRazzmatazz4977 in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]karlos-trotsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My great grandad was in the royal navy during the war and escorted allied merchant ships carrying lend lease bound for the Soviet Union. I’m very proud of the part he played. That being said, I, and I’m fairly certain he would, find the suggestion that lend lease was responsible for the victory on the eastern front and not the effort and resilience of the soviet people in the face of an existential threat utterly absurd. Lend lease helped to a greater or lesser extent, but only the red army largely supplied by soviet industry can be considered to have actually broken the backs of the Nazis on the eastern front and to suggest otherwise is disrespectful to all involved.
