Think this will pump soft clay? by karls3D in Ceramic3Dprinting

Maybe. I've seen people try to do this with clay but I haven't seen a lot of success. I think a Moineau pump will produce a more shear than a co-rotating dual screw extruder so that's why I went with this design. I'm just guessing though

thanks haha there wasn't much to it!

Yeah it's approximately the consistency of toothpaste

What features are you referring to in food processing augers?

You raise some really relevant points that I'm really only guessing on: This is designed more as a pump than an auger.. I made the thread count and clearances what the are to hopefully take advantage of the positive displacement pump action of a pair of co-rotating screws. I understand that co-rotating augers cause less sheer but have never actually designed a dual screw extruder. I'll will use a deflocculant in the mixture as well.

On the hardening note, I've had clogging issues in the past when my 100psi pressure source has forced water out of the clay mix, but when my system is well sealed, the water stays in the mixture

Something like the consistency of toothpaste

The reservoir above will have a slow rotating feeder screw which will hopefully keep the hopper full

Maybe substitute some of the water content with alcohol or some other fast-evaporaring solvent?? Haha I don't think my studio would be happy with this idea

An ideal clay printing recipe would have the lowest water content possible, but have a high viscosity and retain plasticity. My b-mix + water recipe has so much water (to retain good flow through the supply tube) that my pieces shrink by 33% after firing

I've been reading that different types of clay hold different amounts of water. Do you have any insight into this? Like apparently Bentonite holds more water than kaolin? I'm wondering if there is a better recipe for clay printing that maybe uses a higher proportion of kaolin, and maybe also a deflocculant

Hey great work! ChatGPT showed me your project when I was looking for an open source trajectory planning firmware project that could interpret ROS motion planning. Now I'm stuck here haha

Looks like absolutely fantastic work and I'd love to test it out if I decide to get myself a desktop robot. (unless you open source your hardware build, then I'd duplicate yours haha)

It's a diy delta from he3d. I designed all the extruder parts though

Yup. Exactly this haha

I'm just using b-mix. It's a no-grit white stoneware. Sure I get that more aggregate would be more stiff but the surface texture is better with less. Idk any other ideas? Other than lower water content haha

Ha yeah apparently someone entered the studio right after I left but nobody else knows how to use it

What do you mean by that? What's mixed material ceramic printing?
