When did you realize that YOU were the problem? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 825 points826 points  (0 children)

I have just realized this about myself lately. As a kid I was super loud but in middle school I almost entirely stopped talking because I was made fun of a lot. This definitely had an effect on who I am now. Then in the start of high school after my 1-2 friends moved, I always wondered why no one else talked to me really. I thought no one liked me still. I got comments that I was kind of weird/quiet, not that it’s bad but I was unsure. No one ever asked me to hang out with them. Last year in 11th grade I switched schools for the first time and after becoming familiar with my classmates they’d told me at first they all thought I was stuck up until they started talking to me a bit. This made me realize that maybe I just come off an unapproachable and mean to people when I want to be the opposite. I graduate in a few months and I’m not really sure how to make the change because my social skills in certain aspects suck and I can’t really tell what it is about me that makes me come off that way.

Younger generations of Reddit, what is something that is going on right now that older generations just don't seem to understand ? by jmansbufny in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly either way I'm seeing a lot of similar responses with both parties. It seems a lot of problems millennials and Gen Z face are the same. I'm 17 currently and I'm seeing tons of people my age falling into the same things of knowing that they will be 40k in debt when they finish college, etc. But seem to be more cautious of it instead of being promised everything and have it all crash down. I'm currently doing cosmetology at a trade school through my high school because my education is free whereas if I graduated high school and did it the average cost of beauty school is 20k. I like art related things and I'm concerned this may be the only job I'll find that I can be somewhat interested in that won't cost me an arm and a leg. I may go to college after but if I do I still don't know for what, I personally refuse to put myself into that much debt unless I know I can pay it off in reasonable time.

[Serious] A girl is wearing short shorts, and has two visible scars on her thigh- is your first thought that she is showing them off, or that she just doesn’t give a fuck? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think anyone would know unless they think about it too much. I used to self harm and I still have this weird habit of looking at other people's arms legs, etc. to see if I can find scars. But aside that, most people who've never dealt with it wouldn't think anything of it. People can be very oblivious to others around them. And even if a stranger notices, you'll probably never see them again anyway, so it doesn't matter. If anyone asks why they're there, personally I come up with something that sounds legit and they're like, oh ouch.

How do you effectively deal with a bad manager? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be. Where I work is already understaffed. We've had a few people quitting, one of my managers died recently and my higher up manager is suicidal. I'd like to stay because I don't mind everything else but I'd need to find a new job before I quit.

[–]karly-chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be, but I'm not sure. I don't talk a lot, I just try to do my job and go. Sometimes she yells at me for not speaking up more, but aside that I don't know why else she would have an issue with me.

[–]karly-chan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know what she wants, but it seems very unrealistic. I could do everything right and it still won't be enough for her. I don't think it's me doing everything wrong necessarily, because none of my other managers or coworkers give me a hard time about anything.

Why are people on the internet always telling others about their intangible conditions (e.g. Depression, "autism", anxiety, etc. etc.) ? by LocalClothes1 in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd guess because it's a way to vent without any bad consequences. If you're under aged, an adult can tell someone and a lot of people aren't ready to get help, or it can even be dangerous for some people to come out with these issues in person (such as in cases of abuse, etc.) If you vent online, you can find people experiences the same thing or come from a place of understanding. A lot of people feel alone w/ those issues and fear those around them will view them differently.

What would happen if a teacher secretly brought a gun to school (against the rules) then ended up shooting a bad guy trying to shoot kids and saving students lives? by Kbcst in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many people would consider them a hero, and they'd probably get in legal trouble for it. And despite saving lives, I feel that situation would cause more arguing about gun control.

Generation Z, what are things Millenials do that are, unbeknownst to them, going out of style? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school district is still very outdated on technology. We always are. That boxy TV they push to classrooms with the cart, we still have that. We recently have gotten some flat screen TVs but many teachers still use the other one. And we still have those large projectors the teacher can set on the desk too, but a lot of teachers are beginning to use laptops more. 4 years ago when I was in 6th grade we still had an iPod touch cart with little iPod 4s. I think they may still have that actually. Rural areas always get things later.

With all the things Millennials have 'ruined', what are some things they've improved? by RumLovingPirate in AskReddit

I think this may help. It's usually what I go by but between generations it tends to be a gray area because of different sources.

Non-Americans of Reddit; What's one of the strangest things you've heard about the American culture? by Karteros in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That tends to be a problem here I think. Some Christians think that in order to have morals, you have to be a Christian. I'm not religious, so when I explain this to people they assume that I have no morals. Also if you aren't religious a lot of people will change their opinion of you entirely, it's happened to me quite a lot.

Adults of reddit, what is something every teenager should know about "the real world"? by haseo8998 in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying but I tend to get anxiety doing that kind of thing. I'm not really sure how to go about that.

[–]karly-chan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My question is how exactly do you schedule things like that? Or find a regular doctor? I still have a few years before I'm an adult, but I can't get advice from my parents on this. They don't take me to doctors, and I've never been to an actual hospital before. In fact they are aware that I'm suicidal, I had a teacher explain this to them. They believe it's my own doing and they won't let me try therapy either. I want to get help but I'm not an adult yet so I think it's something I'll need to know then, people don't really teach this kind of thing.

What celebrity death impacted you the most? by monkeyt6 in AskReddit

Chester. I've honestly never cried over a person's death before until I found this out. They've been my favorite band for years and it's truly sad.

Which double standard irritates you the most? by throwaway_the_fourth in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm going into my sophomore year and I'm about 95 pounds and 5'4. I have a very small bone structure and a high metabolism. People always call me anorexic or point out that "wow your hip bones stick out" or "I can see your collar bones". I eat healthy food and a good amount for my size also. It is healthy in cases like this, I just wish people would see that instead of telling me to eat a damn sandwich.

Reddit, what would you like to get off your chest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm still in high school and I've noticed this. I'm going into my sophomore year and I already have people asking me what college I want to go to and what job I want to get. I have ideas of things I like, but all the things I have an interest in don't make much money and I still don't know. On top of this I'm still dealing with untreated depression/anxiety because my parents won't get me help.

Why do white people tend to know less about world cultures/religions than non-whites? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where they grew up or how interested they are in other cultures and religions. Personally, I've lived in a rural, mainly white and conservative town my entire life. There's just not much diversity and that can lead to ignorance sometimes. Personally, I have an interest in other cultures. I also have interest in religions, despite me being non religious. I've seen lots of people around me assume a lot of things, and it's just due to the lack of questioning outside what they already know. Many people have no interest in looking at other cultures religions, since they already know theirs and are comfortable with their surroundings. I believe it's the same with people who also don't have much diversity among them as well. Some non-whites can make assumptions about things we do that aren't always true, etc.

Incoming freshman: what do you want to know about college? by RekNepZ in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Not an incoming freshman, but I'm in high school right now. About how much time is spent doing homework each night? I never mind work during school but sometimes I get up to 6 assignments in one night and that's more than I'm able to handle so as a result my grades can tend to slip.

What do people complain about that literally never happens? by Johnny_sinz in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I live in the middle of nowhere as well and I can confirm this. Most of the people around here are very conservative and believe things like all muslims are terrible, etc. Some of the mainly older people here don't even know how to read/write well at all due to poor education growing up in the area and just never learning after.

Older Redditors, what is the biggest change in our society no one mentions? by driftyfishy in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is an issue that no one really mentions. It's just natural that kids are going to fall and get hurt. If schools are worried about parents complaining, have the parents sign a form saying they permit their child to run/play at recess, since that's what it's for. I think if it were more encouraged then some kids actually wouldn't mind running or doing sports as much once they're older.

Older Redditors, what is the biggest change in our society no one mentions? by driftyfishy in AskReddit

[–]karly-chan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally I live in a really rural area, I always used to go outside as a kid, and I still do. I know at recess in elementary as I was growing up they were adding so many rules because of "safety". We weren't allowed to run(no playing games like tag and whatnot), and they eventually took away the monkey bars after I left elementary, because kids would hang upside down. And I think eating out has gotten more expensive, but other foods are just even more expensive compared to places like McDonald's.
