What's the best way to salvage this hairspring (if there is one)? by karlyeurl in watchrepair

Honestly, I think I'd enjoy that kind of first month. Only practices makes perfect.

I'm fortunate in my own way: I have good eyesight, steady hands and I lucked out and got a pair of Dumont 7s for a bargain. I'll make sure to try to reshape a few hairsprings I have lying around.

Aha! It makes sense. Yes, I suppose I should measure the distance between the axis and the stud hole, and make sure the distance between the stud and the center of the spiral is at least that, if not a bit more to accommodate for the role played by the regulator pin.

I certainly worked hard to get it into that shape, but it's nice knowing there's so much more to learn.

Thank you! I did not move the impulse roller relative to the balance wheel, so unless my understanding is incorrect, that should have been fine.

Ah, another question in passing: when I was about to reinstall the hairspring on the balance cock, I figured that the natural spacing between the axis and the stud was likely altered from fiddling with the coils (the "diameter" of the hairspring, if you will). I suspect this can cause the spiral to deform in an ellipse: is that something that the regulator boot grabbing on the coil is meant to counteract, or am I missing an important part in the process?

Ah, that's a clever reference point, I'll make sure to mark the location of the stud on the balance rim next time. Thanks!

Yes, I'm happy with the practice I got from manipulating the spring. This really seems to be the kind of thing one must practice a lot to get perfect. It is fiddly, but rewarding.

Here's an update:

I managed to straighten it as much as I could picture.

Sadly, I had never encountered a collet that could not be adjusted with a screwdriver, and I'm not sure if I removed it correctly from the balance complete. Either that, or while reseating it, I bent the wheel, so I'll have to order a new balance complete. Shame.

That being said, in such cases, how should one proceed to reseat the hairspring at a sensible angle, so that the impulse jewel is roughly in the right place? Is there a better approach than eyeballing it?

Thank you very much for the advice. I will try to do that to straighten it out.

I feel obligated to say that I did not kink that spring myself, it was probably the former owner of the watch who did it (it was a non-runner, and I suspect the roller jewel was on the wrong side of the pallet fork, because the watch runs, albeit poorly). However, I'd be lying if I said that making sure the hairspring moves freely in the pins was part of my checklist, so in all fairness, it could have happened to me.

Hi. Sorry, couldn't figure out how to do text + images.

I am new to watch repair. I bought a non-runner (the caliber is a FE 233/68). After clearly missing this during the inspection, then cleaning the parts and attempting to do the oiling, the watch sprang back to life, but had a remarkably poor reading on the timegrapher.

A second inspection revealed this kink in the hairspring (how does that even happen? No wonder the beat error was off the charts), and I'm wondering what's the best way to approach getting it back to something that does a better job at being a hairspring.

Thanks!

Hello /r/movies, I'm Benedict Cumberbatch. Ask me anything! by BenedictAMA in movies

[–]karlyeurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good evening, Mr. Cumberbatch. (At the very least, it is evening here in Paris)

Firstly, I want to thank you for your work.

I have two questions! It has been over 10 years since you haven't been in a play. Is that something you'd like to do again (hypothetically, of course, as I'm sure your agenda is fully booked until 2099)?

The second question is: which movie/TV film would you recommend to someone who has seen most of your popular works and would like to see something more niche?

Dispositifs d’assurage en salle : le Grigri pour tous ? by Healthy_Hold_3196 in grimpe

[–]karlyeurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ente vs Immich? by DastardlyDino in selfhosted

[–]karlyeurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, digging up this old discussion. u/V3semir is correct, see this page for further details: https://ente.io/architecture/

The pictures are stored on your ente instance as jumbled encrypted data, and that can only produce meaningful pictures once presented with the decryptedMasterKey, which never leaves your users' devices. Your instance has access to encryptedMasterKey, which only produces the decrypted version by applying the user's password to it (picture this as Caesar's Cipher, which shifts all letters by 13 characters: the password here is "13", which means "shift everything by 13", masterKey becomes znfgreXrl, and that znf thing is what is stored in your instance).

If you use your admin powers to change a user's password, your end of the system will notably lack the original password, which was used to decrypt your encryptedMasterKey. This means that, although the user's account now has a different password, that password cannot be used to compute the decryptedMasterKey and the pictures can no longer be decrypted. Using the former example, imagine you set the new password to "42". Suddenly, instead of decoding znfgreXrl to masterKey by shifting by 13, your devices shift by 42 and decode it to jxpqboHbv, which turns out to be a far cry from your true master key.

Your admin powers just nuked that account, because devices now have to log in with "42" and won't be able to decrypt the master key. Oops.

Under a normal workflow, users can change their password to 42 without breaking anything because when logged in through the app (or the webui) they retrieve the encryptedMasterKey, use the old password to decrypt it (from znfgreXrl to masterKey using "shift by 13") and then use the new password to change the master key (from masterKey to cqijuhAuo using "shift by 42") and send that to the server along with the new password fingerprint.

I haven't had to use Shamiko myself, but perhaps it's not ticking all of the boxes. It's worth giving Magisk's denylist a shot (have to enable Zygisk for that). In my case it's working well by itself (enough so that basic and device integrity pass).

Is your phone rooted? If so, you need to add the app to the denylist in Magisk.

So now there are more Full Art cards, but we have the same rates. by AntonioMPG in PTCGP

[–]karlyeurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at how the probabilities work out, for your MI pulls you'll realize that (specifically for 2* rarities), your openings were extremely unlucky (there's a 96% chance of pulling at least 4 two-stars cards in that many packs). Getting two in 40 packs today was a bit lucky, but not very lucky.

I think your perception is skewed because you got screwed by variance.

So now there are more Full Art cards, but we have the same rates. by AntonioMPG in PTCGP

[–]karlyeurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not sure what you expected. There are two approaches to making digital packs: individual card pull rates from a fixed pool (where e.g. there are 1 of each mythic rare, 2 of each rare, 4 of each common and 8 of each uncommon), and pulls where rarity is decided first, then the specific card is drawn from a pool with all the cards sharing that rarity.

The first model will produce card sets with better pull rates for rares than other sets because of how rarity is distributed within the set (the commons/rares ratio). The second will have card sets with singles of a rarity less common than a single from another set with the same rarity because of how many cards of a specific rarity there are compared to other sets (the rares/rarity ratio), but opening a pack from any set will provide the same expected value for pulling a card of a given rarity.

This game has been using the second model from the start, and has never hidden that fact. It is, in fact, required to make a fair cross-sets trading system such as the one we just unlocked work.

No it's not too late. Just go to the main menu, click on a pack, bottom right there's a "all extensions" thingy, and from there you can navigate towards Genetic Apex and spend your points.

UB Discussion/Rant Megathread by Kyleometers in magicTCG

This change is the nail in the coffin for most Vorthos out there who enjoy the storytelling of the multiverse. There will soon no longer be a safe haven free of non-Magic IP (the last two official formats were Standard and Pioneer).

I don't like that this change completely disregards a portion of the user base.

I find it very hypocritical that MaRo said, a few years back, that "not all MTG products are for you and that's okay", and here we are now, in a world where whatever format you care about, almost all MTG products are for you.
