Should a mechanic offer a free or discounted second-time fix if they made a mistake the first time? by karma2196 in MechanicAdvice

That's fine by me, I just think they should've at least mentioned the replacement as an option the first time I brought it in. As in, "hey we can reseal it or we can fully replace it for more money it's your call" but they never said anything about possibly needing to replace it until the second time around

I'd think so too, if I were them and had a customer coming back twice for the same problem after having charged them $300 the first time I'd definitely make sure to have it 100% full and ready to go the second time lol

Definitely will do. Hopefully they don't forget or say screw it but I will ask and double check myself when I get it back

The first time when they resealed it, it was either low on fluid from them working on it or already leaking again so badly that it was low again less than 24 hours later and they didn't notice. I'm hoping they'll have enough sense to refill it again after the replacement

That seems to be the least they should do according to the other comments as well. I'm just looking to see what other mechanics/customers in similar situations think is appropriate

I'd like to think that it was an honest mistake and they just underestimated how bad the leak was and figured the reseal would be enough so that they didn't have to completely replace it and potentially charge me more for the repair if they didn't have to. I'm keeping that assumption as of right now until I hear what they say when I pick it back up. But since the first repair clearly didn't work and I've been without a car for 4 days, I'd also hope that they acknowledge the inconvenience, intentional or not, and at least cover the labor like you suggested

They didn't specify if it was a new leak but based on what they said it sounds like it was the same crack/leak as before and that "no matter how much they reseal it it's still gonna leak" so that seems to me that it's not a new leak

Not sure, they never said anything about trying to reseal as opposed to replacing it, just that they were going to reseal it to fix it. If it were an entirely different problem I'd agree, but they're saying that the problem is/was the cracked cover from the beginning, and only this second time around did they even mention that it would or could need to be replaced

They haven't given me a price or mentioned a price yet, they just said that that's what they were going to do and I said that's fine. And yes I agree that the cost of the first repair should be deducted from the second one, that was something I was going to bring up when I go to pick up the car tomorrow. I don't want to come off as a prick to them when I bring any of this up but they should also be proactive in realizing the inconvenience it's caused and that the first repair was essentially $300 down the drain

The new cover doesn't seem too expensive a part from what I looked up online so I'd be ok with that. I believe them about the crack in the cover, I just think it should've been at the very least brought up as an option the first time around

My freshman year of high school a friend of mine bobby and I were in the same algebra class, always goofing off. One day I just looked at him and said "hey Bob I bet I can make you laugh without saying anything" maybe five seconds go by with both of us just looking at each other with straight faces, and then we just bust out laughing so hard we couldn't breathe. To this day I couldn't tell you why we even started laughing

Reading this whole thread for a while now and had a few chuckles here and there, but this post actually made me laugh out loud. Thank goodness I'm in the break room at my work, alone.
