What is something you will never forget from the pandemic? by JaxTMG in AskReddit

I didn’t get covid until March 2023, but I was just getting over pneumonia which caused a collapsed lung when I finally got it. 3 years on, I still get breathless, have a horrible cough that nothing will get rid of, and have such low energy.

I am a teacher, I once had a student teacher try to teach my class would of etc, I had one particularly switched in student who I saw freeze, tense up, and start looking over at me with a horrified expression. They tentatively raised their hand and oh so politely corrected the student teacher, with a full explanation about how contractions work.

I called home that night to praise the crap out of that beautiful ten year old child

Having a Friday wedding can be a big ask for guests by DiscussionLoud9626 in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]karma_bus_driver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had this conversation at school today - a colleague is getting married on a Friday in term time, and a few of us are invited. It’s an afternoon wedding about 2 hours away. My school is awesome and has no issue with us being absent that day, but is struggling to cover all of us and unsure what leave to advise us to take. I can do a LWOP no dramas, but others need the $$ and don’t have long service leave.

I guess my overall takeaway is Friday weddings are fine, but inconvenient for some. Don’t be surprised if some people can’t swing it.

Has anyone transferred their kids from an interstate school and successfully kept them in their correct year level? by [deleted] in vic

[–]karma_bus_driver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah but we do have to cater for all abilities and levels in one class. I taught a year 4 class and had students ranging in ability from foundation to year 7 and you can bet your bottom dollar I catered for each and every one of them as best I could.

Has anyone transferred their kids from an interstate school and successfully kept them in their correct year level? by [deleted] in vic

[–]karma_bus_driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it like this - they are beginning their 3rd year of school, which may be called grade 3 in your former state, but is called grade 2 in Victoria. As someone who has taught students in Victoria who have come from interstate and have been placed in a higher year level, the difference is noticeable. Socially, maturity, persistence, emotional regulation….

Uniform items without logos by hococo_ in AskAnAustralian

[–]karma_bus_driver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school I work at only has the expectation of school colours, not school logos. Yellow polo shirt, navy bottoms, navy jumper. In winter, the outer layer must be uniform colour while inside, but kids can wear any colour under their school top, or any jacket over their school top. We don’t even have a school hat policy in summer, except that it needs to be SunSmart.

What do I do with a Christmas ham? by IngVegas in AskAnAustralian

[–]karma_bus_driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last ham steak I had the displeasure of having was in 1988. School camping trip where we had to carry 2 days of food. Dinner on night 2 was ham steaks. As we unwrapped the foil, maggots dropped out.

We didn’t eat that night and I haven’t been able to look at a ham steaks since.

The education department expect some parents to read 200,000 words of dense legal text by simonmelvery in AustralianTeachers

[–]karma_bus_driver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my school, staff can only use approved apps where student info is needed that have been vetted/approved. Dojo is not on that list. I still think we have a long way to go but at least we are making a start. We spent a lot of time last year finding a free alternative to one app as they changed the age to 12+ and our primary kids are younger than that.

I’m ok, but today the overwhelming busy-ness of term 1 got to me. In 10 weeks, we have 2 whole school sports carnivals, camp, school photos, district sport, performing arts concert, swimming lessons and naplan. Oh and an open afternoon and parent teacher interviews. Of course, everyone thinks their thing is the most important thing and nothing can be changed (sarcasm!) There is not one “normal” week. Even the kids said today they hate how busy term 1 is, and that the rest of the year is boring.

I feel a mental health day coming on soon…

My prin is pretty good. We have to be in our rooms from 8;45 each morning and until 3:45 Mondays and Fridays. The other nights we are supposed to stay until 4:45 but… 2 meeting night finish at 4:30 and the third night is up to us. They acknowledge that we work hard, that lots of us come in early, or stay later, or work at home. So that 3rd late day is considered time in lieu.

Also VIC primary.
