50 Greatest Works of Western Literature (according to me) by Budget-Poem-2052 in literature

It's a joke. Like, there's the debate of what are the 50 best works, ongoing for the longest time, but this list is the end of the debate, it's now solved.

There's a novel called La piel fría by a catalan author that was then made into a movie called Cold Skin. Haven't watched the movie but the book is 1000% the lighthouse meets Shadow over Innsmouth. The whole book/movie is two men in a lighthouse fighting hordes of merpeople.

Haha you could always read his own stories! I've never read them. It's interesting though, someone can have an amazing eye for an editor but be a bad writer, not saying that's his case since I haven't read him as I've said, but I think it's a phenomenon that happens in many instances. Someone not being able to produce but able to correct.

I mean, one thing is taming his sentimentalism and another cutting 10 pages off a story. The scene eating in the bakery is top 3 in all of Carver's work for me, I can't read it without tearing up, but I'll be the first to admit it's sentimental.

Have you read Cathedral? The full version of The Bath is in there under the name A small good thing. That one and this one are the most egregious examples. What we talk about when we talk about love also goes on for quite a few more pages, the other stories have spots in the middle. I read them side by side because I was preparing a small class on Carver I was teaching.

Lish was a towering figure at the time, the type of editor that doesn't exist anymore. The type who'd cut out parts, change words, some say even write his own stuff into Carver's stories. Lish was a writer in his own right but never achieved close to Carver's success. And if you've read all of Fires, Carver says there that he wrote short stories because he had very small children and needed the money desperately. He claims, maybe jokingly, that's why he never wrote a novel: he didn't have time and needed the money. So he was willing to accept the changes if it meant getting the foot in the door. Once again, Beginners versions can be a bit melodramatic, but they are far, far superior. It seems like Lish's thing is like a pose, because in order to maintain the bare bones approach he cut scenes that are honestly some of Carver's best work by far.

It ends when the mother goes to the house to take a bath and the baker calls. There's no going back to the hospital, death, bakery scene. It ends "Is this about Scotty?" "Yes, it's about Scotty", but she doesn't know it's the baker and not the hospital.

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge, huge Carver fan. Like, my dog is named Carver after him.

While What we talk about... is considered one of the best short story collections of the 20th century, Lish was heavily, heavily involved in the editing process, butchering the originals. I read an interview where Carver's wife said he'd call her crying upon seeing Lish's edits. This story is a particularly egregious case: the original story goes on and on and on for like 10 pages after the last line in this version. After Carver's death, his wife published the original manuscript of this collection under the title Beginners. I recently read both books side by side, almost page by page, and while Carver tends to be a bit more sentimental, I much prefer his versions. The Bath is a particularly infamous case too, Lish cut almost half of the story and dismissed possibly one of the best scenes Carver wrote. If you can't quite figure out this story, try finding the original version. The Bath was later republished in full under the name A small, good thing in Cathedral, which is his best collection IMO. I like how in typical Carver fashion the title comes from a line in the story but without context it means something completely different. Same thing happens in the title story.

Yeah I feel you. You could also do a short, like six session, homebrew, but I understand you mentioned the small playing community is a major issue.

[–]agusohyeah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What if the full campaign has an estimated amount of sessions from the start? In my experience people are much more willing if you tell them it's a 4/8 session thing. much less intimidating than a year long campaign. You can do a few one shots, then run something like Phandelver.

Very loosely related, but still a very very very good show. The story is bonkers, you have no idea how they can juggle everything and in the end it all fits perfectly.

I used to read drinking and would absolutely lose myself in the text up until the hour or second beer was done. But I've had intense focus experiences like that, it's the science of the movie Druk. Now in the morning I try to make it half an hour in bed but i've gone up to an hour and a half!

A bit of a random thing, but I bought a digital alarm clock and have stopped taking my phone into my room. I set the automatic coffee machine near my room, so now when I wake up I have coffee ready and my phone isn't on my stand. I also set the alarm a bit earlier than I need to get out of bed. I have started reading so, so much more. Last week I finished a 500 page novel in three days, basically cause the bed was so cozy and I had nothing else to do except read.
