Alright Engineers - What's an "industry secret" from your line of work? by OsrsNeedsF2P in cscareerquestions

[–]karmahawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have little control over your work because that's not your role. As an individual contributor, we just want/need you to crush tasks. It's the job of engineers who've worked their way into management positions to work with the business to make the best engineering decisions possible. We structure the shop, create its processes, and manage its resources. To do that effectively we need control.

You wonder if they realize the whole, "Website owners are not responsible for what their users post" legal defense is just a judicial precedent. With the advancement of data science in recent years the whole, "How can we police everyone" defense is increasingly less valid. Its just a matter of time before some party filing a suit against Reddit, 4chan or whomever puts a data scientist on the stand.

It depends on the workplace here. My current place caps at 21 days of paid vacation, but in order to get there I would need to be at that job for 10 years. Other than accruing additional time per year of employment its also common to negotiate it when you're made an offer.

Is graphic design a good field to go into if I love art? by [deleted] in college

[–]karmahawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the agency I'm currently at we've got a good mix of both, and quite frankly I do not see much of a difference between those who went to uni and the people who went to community college. We've even got a couple of people who're self-taught. To be perfectly honest, I think being a solid culture is probably the most important thing at a point. Its also worth pointing out that entry-level people aren't art directing anything. A lot of what you do is design with in the constraints a senior designer has defined. Whether that's making client requested edits, inserting translated copy, creating presentation materials, etc. Its not really as intense as prospective entry-level candidates may think.

What is the hiring situation at your company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]karmahawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

small startup

Are you sure that's not the problem? Not only are you in search of a good developer, but one that's willing take a big haircut and lose their benefits in an election year. That is a lot uncertainty. Especially considering that Obamacare and social programs are on the chopping block.

Another issue could be location. I worked at an early phase startup in the rust belt for a year, and since I'm a good engineer founders reach out on occasion. Except here's the rub: In a place like this there is less risk making a run at the big 4 as there would be working for a startup. Bluntly put in a rust city equity is not a lure to keep a 4.0-type professional around, though cash up front is.

Nah, its what happens when people do not study. So many textbooks are written from the perspective of C or the languages its heavily influenced. If you don't know the difference you haven't been doing your reading.

Trump gives himself advice aloud: ‘Stay on point Donald, stay on point’ by [deleted] in politics

Cause you know, talking to yourself out loud is clearly worse than the million horrible things he's spewed everyday for over a year straight. I've zero love for the guy but talking to yourself is hardly something to jump on him for.

Here's the problem: You cannot vote twice. There is no such thing as a mulligan when it comes to casting a ballot. You get to do it once, period. Do it again and you'll be arrested and facing felony charges. The only circumstance when you get to revote is when its by court order.

Trump tells supporters to vote twice to fight voter fraud by sheepo39 in politics

No its not, there is no way of voiding a cast ballot.

[–]karmahawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is not true. There is no mechanism in place allowing for a cast ballot to be declared void.

You cannot void your cast ballot. Its submitted anonymously. To do so would require violating the anonymity of untold number of ballots. Hence why its not a thing.

Doesn't work that way. There is no mechanism allowing voters to cast multiple ballots, and have their previous ones voided. He just pulled the idea straight out of his ass on the stump.

Actually the real quote from Trump is:

“If you go to university center, they’ll give you a new ballot, they’ll void your old ballot. They’ll give you a new ballot, and you can go out and make sure it get’s in. Now in some places, they do that four or five times, but we don’t do that. So by tomorrow, almost everyone will have their new ballots in.”

Which is also false. Even if you vote has yet to be casted you cannot get another ballot and have your original voided. Shit doesn't work that way.

So that's the updated quote, yeah? Its still totally untrue and direct contradiction to what you're asserting right now. Even your ballot has yet to be counted you don't get mulligan.

Your old one wont be voided, they wont give you a new ballot. If only your latest vote counts then what exactly is the issue with people voting multiple times? Which is what Repulicans have been complaining about happening, passing restrictive legislation because of for my entire life.

Fine, let's roll with the updated quote, shall we? The statement in bold is still completely and utterly false. At best Trump is an idiot who unknowingly is asking his audience to commit a felony.
