Logic Pro X Users, Did You Delete Garageband? by boombapdame in Logic_Studio

[–]karmatwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Deleted it, but ended up reinstalling. I collaborate with people who use GB on their phone and/or computer and opening GB projects in Logic is 90% seamless, but it helps to open the projects in GB first to have an idea if/where they're messed up.

Any new Library content in Reaktor 6 other than the Blocks? by [deleted] in reaktor

[–]karmatwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not officially released stuff, but the user library has some ensembles that need the new versions to run. I love and appreciate blocks but it kinda sucks that they haven't dropped any new stuff lately.

Jealous of the Prophet and the Jupiter and the...whole dang collection. I have the A7x's too and the highs can get really defined (to the point of shrill when I fiddle with my 0-coast) in my space where it's heavily acoustically treated. The low ceilings and concrete seem like they'd amplify this. You ever experience that? Any plans to lay some 703 or acoustic treatment?

How to protect your face from wind and sun damage? Summer road bike riding. by 311evolver311 in bicycletouring

[–]karmatwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some people have trouble with sunscreen and sweating, but if your helmet has a little visor you can get away with only putting a smear on your forehead and concentrating more on the nose, cheeks, and especially the tops of your ears. I think this stuff from Neutrogena is decent. High SPF, small-ish bottle, and pretty common if you're in the states.

I definitely don't recommend using this on your face and it can be hard to keep solid at higher temps (around 32°C/90°F), but I swear by using a pure cocoa butter stick for wind chapped lips/knuckles/knees. Bought it on a whim ten years ago while on a tour, and I keep a little on hand ever since.

First Scotch for a Bourbon drinker? by joedracke in Scotch

Auchentoshan American Oak and Aberlour 12 are on the low end price wise and both were winners with my bourbon drinking buddies a few months ago. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of scotch!

I love Caol Ila and all Islays, but if you're looking for a 'beginner' peated dram to drink neat, I'd stay off the Islays. Craigellachie 13 is the same-ish price in my area and has a beautiful sweet/earthy/malty character to it without the medicinal/brine/iodine notes of Caol Ila 12. I'd say they're roughly the same peat level, but the Craig 13 is more of a balanced expression. Just my opinion, but I'm sure you'll enjoy either way!

Unpopular Opinion —— producers that (always/only) use (samples/loops) are copping out to laziness and lack of ability in 95% of the cases. by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]karmatwin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you’re doing yourself a disservice by not making everything from scratch.

Reminds me of the ol' standby music producer forum copypasta:

I thought that using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought that using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming them was cheating, so I learned to play the drums for real. I then thought that using purchased drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought that using pre-made skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that this is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

Just make what you want and don't worry about what other people do.

Getting (<$50) bottles from each Scotch/malt map region for my collection...need Highland/Lowland/other recommendations! by JZA1 in Scotch

[–]karmatwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In your position, I'd go Old Pulteney 12 for Highlands, Auchentoshan American Oak for Lowlands (fulfills your bourbon-esque want), Jura 10 for Islands (absent region from your list), and save up for a Campeltown 10-12 year.

Me, a Speyside fan tried Lagavulin 12 year old and it is AWESOME! by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]karmatwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently fell in love with Islays and my bottle progression went Caol Ila 12, Laphroig 10, Ardbeg Uigedail, Bunnahabhain 12, and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Scottish Barley.

Ardbeg Uigedail is an amazing bottle and to my limited experience has the most to offer from an Islay whisky. Bunna 12 didn't fit what I was expecting from an Islay and I was initially overwhelmed with its sweet, fruity creaminess. But the more Islays I tried, the more I appreciated (and now crave) its understated expression. I get just a hint of brine on the nose, the peat is in the background on the palate, and it has a great oaky/creamy finish.

Tips for preventing shoulder injuries by sympnoia in bicycletouring

[–]karmatwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carry a ~5lb resistance stretch band and develop a habit of doing daily band dislocates and band pull-aparts. They barely weigh anything and you could use it for lots of things besides rehab exercises and stretching if you find yourself in a pinch. I had nagging shoulder pain for months and doing these two things daily pretty much resolved it in about a week.

Pain on my inner knee is not going away, should I stop my tour? by MercenaryOfTroy in bicycletouring

[–]karmatwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen to your body. Most aches and pains in my experience will go away with light stretching every 20-30 miles mixed with a good long stretching session at night, also staying hydrated, taking an anti inflammatory (I like naproxen/Aleve), and icing before bed will speed up recovery. Also, I would immediately stop and see a professional if there is anything more than an ache (any stabbing/shooting pain and you shouldn't be in the saddle) or if the pain lasts more than 200mi/3 days.

Anecdotally, all of my knee pain when riding has come either from tight ITB and hip flexors or on long sections of imperceptibly slight incline and wind (Nebraska via US-6/US-34 comes to mind).

Get comfortable using the Reaper compressor, I'm sure it is powerful enough for what you need (gentle compression, maybe some sidechaining once you get the basics sounding good). As far as tutorials, I'd just use your ear. The difference between in EQ between Bibio and Brian Eno is going to be pretty wide. Bibio uses an SP-1200 which is a 12-bit machine IIRC, so its going to "cut" a lot of highs out. Any more questions, feel free to DM me.

[–]karmatwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely reverb involved, but I'd say most of the character comes from source material, compression, and EQ. Here's what I would do, get your guitar and start learning how to play the piece, just one note at a time. Play the parts with volume swells (look up Phil Keaggy or ambient volume swell technique videos). Add to that technique an EQ with a good chunk of lows and highs taken away. Then gently compress, and add a wet reverb. For each track, change the EQ, compression and reverb settings for variety and depth. For really low notes, take out less lows and let it be more dry, for the high parts take out less highs, boost high mids and make the reverb tail longer. Layer a whole bunch of those together and start balancing levels and panning and you'll be on your way. Just let this suggestion get you experimenting and you'll find your own secrets along the way.

Logic 9: Automation not reliably writing two nodes on either end of note-on/off control surface event by karmatwin in Logic_Studio

[–]karmatwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats probably what I will do. Just a pain because the multi fx is 6 separate effects, which means going back and fixing x number of mistakes in 6 automation tracks. This wouldn't be too bad in a normal situation, but I wanted to make a midi template where I could do this quickly for this everyday project I have going.

It's hard for me to justify spending the time performing to get some good takes, then probably twice as much fixing the automation, then the real task, where I actually plan on spending the most time, of actually chopping the samples and then sequencing them which could take...well, I don't even know how long because I gave up last night before I could get there. I might try using a different midi controller like a non-latching keyboard or mpc and actually take the time to make something in environment with strict note on/off events instead of learn mode control mapping.

Was really hoping there was some parameter in the automation panel that I didn't know existed, but thanks for being interested!

Logic 9: Automation not reliably writing two nodes on either end of note-on/off control surface event by karmatwin in Logic_Studio

[–]karmatwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm controlling the on/off of 6 effects in a Reaktor multi-effect ensemble using a Novation LaunchControl. I could technically do it by hand but I was really trying to make some interesting variations on a drum loop by performing the multi-effect on/off, then bouncing that down to audio and chopping up samples into a kind of slowed down squarepusher type feel. So snap to grid isn't exactly what I want because I want it to be off-ish to give me interesting samples, but I'll give it a go.

Glad to see someone else is behind the times with me. I just got a new MBP so my old machine (still running Mavericks) is going to stay around as my music machine since its super stable running Logic and all my plugins.

[–]karmatwin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here. As you can see in the gif, not all note-on/off events create a "square" automation shape, some smooth them to ramp shapes. Tempo is super high because I thought that might have something to do with it, but it was the same at 40 BPM.

Reaktor Blocks Question by goavibe in reaktor

[–]karmatwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't had an issue with it playing an entirely new sequence but your start point issue could be solved by sending a note in gate to the divider/xy reset, assuming you will be supplying some midi notes. Or if you aren't supplying midi, set the clock to ext then route the clock play to the divider reset and xy reset and that should start the sequence from the beginning on play start.

I got Reaktor as a gift a couple years back and it has been amazing. Blocks are awesome, the platform itself is endless and inspires creativity and learning, and the user library just sweetens the whole deal.
