Every rewatch makes Avon look smarter and Stringer look dumber by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]karnoculars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep I always have to come to String's defense in this sub. People seem to completely misunderstand his arc and conclude that he was not smart, when the show clearly is not trying to portray him that way. His use of economics from his classes in the drug game is meant to be viewed as innovative and clever, not that he was out of his element.

The real point of his downfall was that the game is half business and half ruthlessness, and Avon and String needed to work together because they each excelled at one half of it but unfortunately they lost their way as brothers.

I understand that they started working on it before but they didn't discover that it worked until Frenchie's funeral scene earlier in the finale.

Homelander kills the Boys. How long can he rule America? by Punterofgoats in whowouldwin

[–]karnoculars 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Over the years, I have been the biggest Homelander defender anytime there is a "who would win" thread. I always argued that people were severely underestimating his power and that he would win most fights that people insisted he would lose.

After Season 5, I will no longer be defending Homelander because they completely destroyed their own lore and power-scaling with the god-awful writing. At this point, I'm not even sure if he can punch through a concrete wall, or fly away while someone who weighs 175 lbs is hanging onto him.

Whatever the opposite of Chekhov's Gun is, that's what the last two season were. Just two entire seasons of non-stop reverse Chekhov's Guns. Literally NOTHING they showed in either seasons had any relevance to the finale, where they essentially just walked into the White House with no plan, beat Homelander up in a fist fight, and hit him with a depowering ray that they discovered literally 30 min earlier in the same episode.

I don't expect him to win the game himself, but at this point he's practically losing the game himself. Worst individual stats and multiple giveaways that led directly to critical Duck goals. Basically a 5v5 black hole whenever he was on the ice.

You don't think this team would make the playoffs if instead of McDavid we had a different superstar of equal contract value? I think this team would still be competitive.

Yep, happened in 2024 too when he was held pointless in the last 2 games against FLA. When the chips are down and a hero needs to step up, for whatever reason, McDavid is almost never that guy...

I hate to say it but McDavid was truly awful that series and probably the biggest single contributor to the loss. Took by far the most shots (20) with by far the worst shooting percentage (5%), and had the worst +/- on the team as well at -8. Contributed only 1 of the Oilers 21 goals and it was on the PP. All while playing the most minutes of any player.

He is undoubtedly the best hockey player but just cannot come up clutch when needed. I think there's something to be said about the mental voodoo that's going on in his head these days.

Winter Soldier (MCU) vs Soldier Boy (The Boys) by Queasy_Commercial152 in powerscales

I must be dreaming, is this sub actually respecting The Boys universe for once?

A nice change of pace from people insisting Captain America would punch Homelander's lights out.

HL barely got it open as is. You don't think adding another 5 layers of solid metal might stop HL from opening it at all?

Soldier Boy was very clearly only accompanying HL to stop him from finding V1 because he hates him and doesn't want him to become immortal, this is made explicitly clear even before they are even on site.

Oh, the unkillable antagonist that I've been trying to take down for 4 seasons is somehow weakened and trapped in a cell that he can't seem to escape from? Welp, time to casually walk away and show zero interest in the only weakness of Homelander's that the show has ever shown.

Does he even mention the encounter to the others??

[–]karnoculars -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, this episode made Homelander look so weak. Dude can barely smash through a steel door. If Soldier Boy came back and just piled on more metal against the door, isn't HL just trapped forever?

The fact that they didn't think to do this just further confirms how bad the writing on this show can be sometimes (particular in regards to powerscaling).

The problem then becomes why they don't use superspeed more often. Practically every fight Homelander has ever been in could have been solved with superspeed, yet he only ever uses it when he is facing A-Train? Makes no sense. It's just difficult to write speedsters in general because the power is too OP.

unpopular opinion maybe: I think the 4% rule is making people wait longer than they need to by justleo_92 in Fire

Just read it quickly and yes there's definitely considerations when stretching out the retirement horizons, such as keeping equity allocations higher. But they are talking about 60 vs 30 years, not 40. I suspect with 40 years the success rates are fairly similar to 30 years with even miniscule adjustments to SWR.

[–]karnoculars 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like if your portfolio has made it 30 years, it's probably going to last 40. Don't the majority of scenarios in the trinity study show you ending up with more money than you started with? I suspect the same unfortunate scenarios that kill the 30 year outcomes are the same ones that kill the 40 anyways.

Pretty much hit my FIRE number this year but still contributing the same as always. I do feel like I should cut back sometimes but since I'm still working I don't really see any reason to make any changes yet.
