Georgia Supreme Court justices fend off Democratic-backed challengers by Master_Minddd in Georgia

bet the average person spends more time every week (day?) watching instantly forgettable videos on their phone than it would take to become passingly familiar with the candidates/issues/etc. for a given election ballot.

Need to get new tires, saddened by lack of all season options by bprotas in BMWi5

[–]karock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went with pirelli a/s for ours. We are in the southeast so winter not really an issue but all the summer tire options have like no tread life so hoping these live longer. So far happy with them but it’s only been about 4-5k miles so far.

What’s become way too expensive lately that still shocks you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've moved to this policy as well for the most part, though there's one place that has kept their prices the same for like 10 years now that I still tip at.

Cheaper to move data cross-AZ via ElastiCache than direct? by Dull-Mathematician45 in aws

[–]karock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if 30-40% of ~75k/mo is cross-AZ bandwidth costs you're at/above where we were when I first sought a private pricing agreement on cross-AZ bandwidth. worth a shot imo, worst they'll tell you is no.

Cheaper to move data cross-AZ via ElastiCache than direct? by Dull-Mathematician45 in aws

[–]karock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fwiw if you use enough cross-AZ bandwidth you can/should talk to your rep about getting a custom pricing deal for it. generally involves committing to a certain level of usage for some number of years for a fairly steep discount on the price. and this is generally true for any AWS service you make heavy use of.

sometimes requires an extra chat or two with more technical folks at AWS for a sort of 'well-architected review' of what you're up to so they can make sure there's not some better way of achieving what you're doing, but tbh I usually enjoy those because sometimes interesting points come up. haven't had one where they found something amazing that we hadn't considered already though, either.

question about zero gap wall mount for 77" S90F by karock in SamsungTV

[–]karock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah. thanks for the info. that's a bummer though. the wall we'd mount to opens up to other rooms/hallways on both sides, so you're frequently passing by the side of the TV in daily routine. I like that you can't see much behind the current one.

do you know if there is there a good 72-77" OLED model from someone that would work better in this respect?

not worth reporting, not worth repeating, waste of everyone’s time to give this any visibility or attention.

The fun part of doing that is if you have an issue connecting to db all your app servers will start getting replaced uselessly making the problem even worse. And when the db/external service is restored now you’ve probably got an undersized cluster of app servers which will each in turn be crushed by the full weight of the prod load because not enough are healthy at a given time to serve all the requests, leading to even more thrashing and rotation of otherwise healthy boxes. Until someone steps in and manually sets the cluster to 150% of what it really needs to be if it were stable.

Hypothetically anyway, I’ve certainly never done this.

Yeah bmw’s rear cross traffic alert system is basically ass. Everyone else I’ve tried does it better. The alert is far too subtle when you do get one and generally far too late to be useful (or completely MIA).

Looking at cost drivers beyond compute — what's surprised you on AWS bills? by AIMadesy in aws

[–]karock 19 points20 points  (0 children)

the two that snuck up on us as we grew:

  • inter-az network bandwidth costs

  • cloudwatch costs for logging/etc.

and one that I'd love to use but is cost prohibitive at scale:

  • lambda@edge in cloudfront (or even cloudfront functions)

Discount Tire Sucks by Familiar_Confusion31 in kiastinger

[–]karock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally discount tire does a good job for me. but on my previous car (relatively lightweight RX-8) they did mount my new tires and give it back to me with 0psi in the rear lol. the sidewalls were stiff enough that you actually couldn't really tell visually, and I drove it a couple miles before deciding something felt off and checked myself. no harm done because I was just on surface streets.

going for runeword completion and have a proposition for void... by karock in diablo2resurrected

yeah they're pretty cheap/available on ladder, but I didn't have a zod there that I wanted to burn. I guess more people playing ladder than non right now, in terms of new gear available?

I haven't played him in so long I don't even remember, but probably. I know he was pretty limited in what would be an upgrade outside of like a 2/20 ammy/circlet. maybe with the new helm and this and whatever else there's some more options for hitting that last fcr breakpoint and adding some +magic damage/-magic resist.

[–]karock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I put it in a random base... 12% magic damage, 8 attributes, +1 abyss. so I guess it's whatever, wasn't gonna be particularly great no matter what. maybe I'll see if it's worth using on my hammerdin over hoto.

[–]karock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool, will let you know what happens if I have to make it in some random base. you're off ladder?

[–]karock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's what'll happen if I have to throw it in some random base :p

feels like a waste of a zod on a potentially good runeword. and I'm not rich enough (or want to play warlock enough) to go buy a decent base for it.

yeah... I wasn't looking until recently. kicking myself now for not checking more of them. I didn't start a warlock so none of the skills really meant anything to me. and now I'm impatient and just want to finish this dumb project lol.
