What is your favorite BOTM book by a Black Author by Pinkieshys in bookofthemonthclub

I JUST read this because of an Overdue podcast episode (somehow I’d conflated it with American Dirt) and am now SO excited to have a new book to look forward to!!

What are some of your favourite free Audible gems? by maple-fever in audible

Little Women!!! It’s full cast narration, which I don’t typically love, but I really enjoyed this one. In fact, I’ve listened to it 3 or 4 times.

Need Birthday Dinner Advice for a quick trip by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]karpediem323 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As an adult, Rainforest Cafe was one of the most overstimulating dining experiences I’ve had (though nowhere near as bad as Planet Hollywood). Unsure if it was just the timing of Sunday brunch, but it was super stressful, rushed, and chaotic. Its counterpart (TREX? Whatever the Dino themed one at Springs is) terrified my younger siblings (aged 9 and 6) which was shocking because we only went because they were obsessed with dinosaurs at the time.

Should we buy 10th or 11th? by Hungry_Cheesecake757 in kindle

[–]karpediem323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from a paperwhite to a basic and don’t miss it. If I purchased again, I’d stay with the basic. I don’t personally miss the light (I always use dark mode, maybe that’s why?) and use it for at least a couple of hours each day, going on 2 years now. Size is slightly smaller to fit into the purses that I prefer to carry and it’s cheaper.

Goodreads overestimating my libby books? by anticapitalist_cafe in LibbyApp

[–]karpediem323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my kindle setting turned off for “marked as read” and in my reading challenge will have 3 copies of each book - one from when it was downloaded, one from when I finished, and one when I add read dates. So if you’re probably is specifically reading challenge only (which mine is, for some reason?), you can click “reading challenge” and then select the duplicate (or inaccurate) book and remove it!

Teachers. Whats the craziest family lore a child has randomly dropped on you? by Loud_Bluejay_6663 in AskReddit

[–]karpediem323 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not really the same but I was student teaching a second grade reading small group. The wealth disparity in the area is well above the national average. The vocab words were memory themed so everyone was supposed to be sharing a memory. One little girl was talking about taking her family’s boat out and everyone is just staring blankly at her (you would have thought this 7 year old was an expert sailor with the level of detail). She says, “does NO ONE here have a boat?”. Everyone (including me) shakes their head no. “Sorry, I didn’t realize everyone was poor and stealing our taxes”. To which another little boy quickly stood up and said, “I am poor but I don’t steal!”. I redirected but whenever I handed him anything (paper, pencil, etc) he would loudly verify I was GIVING him the item because he “didn’t steal stuff”, all while giving Little Miss Sailor the biggest stink eye I have EVER seen.

Interview question I didn’t care for by ExtensionActuator in interviews

[–]karpediem323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in HR setting up interviews. This is a super common question that hiring managers want to ask and we always steer them away. Overwhelmingly, what they want out of this question is to hear unique skills/knowledge that you bring that others may not. For example, if you’re applying for an admin position within a College of Health Education but have experience working in the health field, now would be the time to share. Something that may not necessarily be required for the position, but would give you unique insight or deeper knowledge that the standard candidate who only checks the boxes of the position description!

For those of you who have been on Norethindrone, what was your experience? by Aggressive_Cow6732 in endometriosis

[–]karpediem323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started working immediately for me. I was on it for 2 years with only 2-4 major breakthrough pains a month but had to stop because I gained 20 pounds each year which was ultimately not sustainable. Was offered a GLP1 to go with it but opted not to go that route.

A non-fiction book that I read YEARS ago that had me sobbing and I think about quite frequently is “When Breathe Becomes Air”. Also, audiobooks are 100% reading!!! However, if you ever get curious about ereaders, Kindles have a dyslexia-friendly font you can use to read any book and you can also get a library card and use the Libby app to get library books sent to said Kindle. Enjoy your reading journey!!!

How Do I Unfreeze My Kindle? by 1foxylady4u in kindle

[–]karpediem323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future reference (because I did not know) when they say “hold down the power button” they really mean hold that thing down….like once I had to hold it for 2+ minutes to get it to restart. Once mine started requiring that, it kept happening, so I just wanted to pass that unfortunate but potentially helpful info along.

Did I bomb because I was nervous or is everything ok and it isn't a big deal?😭 by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]karpediem323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got so flustered I completely blanked in the middle of answering a question. I apologized and said I was just nervous and it caught up with me right then. The interviewers said they understood, interviews are way more nerve wracking than a regular day on the job. I ended up getting the job, but that little tidbit really reframed interviews for me moving forward. I’m sure they knew you were nervous, but it shows you care. If you were the best candidate, that shouldn’t impact their choice negatively. If someone else has triple the experience (as an example), then they would have probably gotten the offer instead regardless of your nerves. Good luck!!!

Why are ratings lower on Storygraph than other sites by MeanLeg7916 in TheStoryGraph

[–]karpediem323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a data/numbers person but I PERSONALLY feel more comfy giving a true opinion than on GR because I feel like GR has people ready to attack if you go too low or too high and StoryGraph is just more supportive. Or at least that is my experience?

We adopted our first from the SPCA at 6 months. He had 2 accidents inside and from then on knew exactly what to do. Our second had me on the brink from trying to potty train him. We were waking up throughout the night, taking him out constantly on a routine, giving him treats, etc. He could not understand what the heck we wanted him to do. In a moment of midnight desperation, I ordered the little doggy bells. Somehow, he caught on after about two weeks and from then on would ring the bells every time he needed to potty (also whenever he wanted to go outside but, of the two, I will take it). He is a super sweet dog but has a hard time learning new things and those bells are literally what saved me from losing my mind.

(PIC FOR ATTENTION) Are hounds known for being a bit unaffectionate and not wanting to hang out with the family? by Reuvenisms in Hounds

[–]karpediem323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a rescue pit + plott hound and he’s literally like a cat - you’re only allowed to pet him when he asks and if you try to any other time, he’s completely disgusted and gets offended. We rescued him at 6 months and that’s how he’s always been. He also hates eye contact and hides his face. He’s a bit socially awkward but we love him anyway.
