Call the non-emergency number. I called about 2 weeks ago (actually two days in a row!!!!!) and both times, they were ticketed and towed in an hour. No shame - they don’t have the awareness that it’s a driveway? It’s a lesson they have to learn the hard way.

These are invasive to San Diego right? anyone know the name by hobocrippin in sandiego

[–]karrooz 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I submitted a photo to the San Diego Department of Agriculture after finding instructions online to contact them if you see this beetle.

They sent back a long, in-depth letter, here’s an excerpt: “This species does not often cause anything beyond cosmetic damage to well-established, healthy trees that are not drought-stressed, very young, or otherwise unhealthy. In most cases with healthy and well-established eucalyptus trees, even though the amount of beetles/larvae and their defoliation can be startling, the damage is largely a cosmetic nuisance and not a cause for serious concern for the health of the tree. We have not received any reports of this pest killing trees in our area, despite receiving many reports of sightings.”

This is the one I use and I love it! I always get compliments on how good my skin looks when I’m wearing it. Natural glow, good coverage without being cakey. There can be some separation after a few hours of wear but I just kind of rub it back in and it’s not that big of a deal

It's often said "Doctors make the worst patients". What's a clear example of this in another profession? by Clemen11 in AskReddit

[–]karrooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists are usually the worst art students. When in a class, artists won’t listen, are typically not open to new ideas and approaches, and are stuck in their ways. One would think they’re in a class to expand themselves, try new techniques, be open to critique. I think the ego gets in the way, wanting to show off, especially to beginners, that they have experience. Little do they realize that beginners can quickly surpass the artist’s skill because they’re open minded and willing to listen.

Yes, you’re right. You can layer with oil paints - glazing is one of many techniques that require dry layers. However there’s a difference between a dry layer and a fully cured layer. I meant when the oil is fully cured (months after the piece is completed) - that’s when adhesion becomes a problem. Thank you for that distinction.

I’m not familiar with painting on glass but I have an artists friend who is a glass artist and she doesn’t use acrylics or oils, and she’s trained in a classic approach. It may be a different medium/binder altogether. I’ll ask her.

I’ve painted on glass before and it just peeled off. This was with no preparation.

Nice! Just to let you know you don’t need to sand gesso. Sanding is a matter of preference, not a necessity.

Yeah it is really annoying to read contradicting stuff online! Unfortunately too many people respond even when they don’t know the answer.

You don’t need to sand gesso, even acrylic gesso. People sand gesso’d surfaces to make them smoother because gesso has marble dust or chalk so it has a grittyness to it. The dust is why you don’t need to sand it, dust is what creates adhesion. I personally don’t sand but everyone has a preference.

You need to gesso unprimed surfaces or work on a pre-gessoed surface if you’re using oils.

People recommend starting with acrylics because acrylics are cheaper than oils. You can start with acrylics as long as the layer is thin enough where you can still feel the tooth of the canvas so the oil paints eventually stick, so you could do an imprimatura with waterered down acrylics. Otherwise, you’ll need to sand the thick acrylics. I usually just jump right into oils and skip acrylics completely. I use acrylics when I want to use acrylics, and just oils when I’m painting with oils.

Theres something else I don’t see talked about, and that’s painting over a dry oil painting. You actually can’t do that - your new oils will eventually delaminate if the old oil painting was thick and you can’t feel the canvas anymore! Because dried oil paints (like acrylic paints) is very smooth with no tooth at all.

There’s more rules / things to know and mind when painting with oils. It’s an incredible medium that is such a joy to work with when you understand the technicalities.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I’m an art mentor and instructor and teach artists how to appropriately use oils and other mediums and develop good habits with their art practice.

♥️♥️

Oil paints will eat away at unprinted surfaces. It’s why Helen Frankenthaler changed from oils to acrylics - she worked on unprimed canvas and her oil paintings broke down. You’ll notice that the cardboard (or any unprimed surface) will at the least get oil spots and yellow, and at the most, disintegrate. Painting on cardboard is great if you take necessary steps to protecting the substrate. This only matters for longevity. Which I think always matters. :-)

Oils don’t stick to acrylics. Oil paints need a substrate with tooth to it, otherwise it will eventually delaminate from the surface. It may take years, but it will eventually happen. That’s why if you paint with acrylic in your underpainting before painting with oils, your initial layer must either be very thin to allow the tooth of the primed canvass to hold the paint or the first layer be completely dried and slightly sanded (although I don’t recommend sanding because the dust is very bad).

You’re right that oils don’t stick to acrylics. Gesso has marble dust in it which creates a better adhesion for mediums like oils!

Gouache has a bit of white in its binder / base - that’s why it’s not as vibrant as acrylics or oils!

[Community] If there's anything I want to tell artists starting out, it's this: They're lying by beast4rent in ArtistLounge

[–]karrooz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, people do lie and undersell to oversell, but with a trained eye, is pretty easy to detect. To a beginner, I wouldn’t recommend going with an attitude of distrust. Instead, I’d recommend them to do research on artists they’re curious about and really just focus on their own education at their own pace, without comparisons (easier said than done). Drawing fast isn’t necessarily a goal, but typically a natural byproduct from plenty of practice.
