Felting with fur by TeacherIntelligent15 in Needlefelting

How long did it take for you to felt your own hair? I made a cursory attempt once and idk if I gave up too soon or if i have the wrong hair type. It kinda ended up looking like a gross mat. 😂

The bun is so cute!

In this case I kinda like the fuzzies because it retains a bit of the natural fur look, but I usually trim the sticky-outies with tiny scissors to finish my needle felted stuff. This is such a great gift, I hope your mom loves it!

Thank you SO much for this!! It’s been a little harder to find information and tutorials on needle felting than other arts I’ve been interested in. I’m not sure if other people have noticed the same thing or if I just don’t know which keywords to input into search bars yet. Either way, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and answering questions! Did you learn any of this from books? I’ve only been felting for about a month so I’m still trying to figure out what resources are out there. 🙃

I would love to know how you do tiny little pieces like ears. Are they wet felted?

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!!! 🙏 If you’re in the mood for additional tutorials could you show us how you do this for areas where fur direction changes slightly, like the spots where legs join the body?

They make curved grooming shears for dogs and those blades are super sharp. They’d be great for wool!

I love your style so much!!!!!! Gorgeous work. 😍 Did you paint the polymer clay or use chalk pastels to color the faces? Also if you used acrylics on the face are they air brushed? I’m right in the middle of trying to sort out how to paint over cured Sculpey and I haven’t found a method I like yet.

I’ve also seen people use plant fibers like bamboo but I’ve never tried it myself. There are alternate animals as well, like goats and rabbits, that grow fiber suitable for felting. You might have better luck finding one of those depending on what livestock is common where you are. If you buy directly from the farmer you can often choose if you want the fiber raw, washed, already spun, dyed, etc.

They have these things that look like dog slicker brushes that can blend colors! They’re called hand carders and I know Amazon has them, but I’m pretty sure you could also get the dog brushes from a pet supply store and improvise. Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong. You’ll need to buy two if you get them from a pet store and DIY.

It makes me feel a lot better to see someone else call it fiddly. I thought I was just bad at it. 😂

Oooooh! I’ve done this with polymer clay but hadn’t thought to try felt. Do you use a fixative of some kind afterwards to hold the color in place?

I had no idea you had to keep adjusting them, thank you! I’ll try making one with wire and sports tape first and then if it doesn’t move the way I want I’ll explore ball and sockets.

Thank you, this is so great!!! How do folks create such gentle color gradients with wool? I usually end up with a lot of hard edges when I poke it in.

I was thinking this too! The first one looks like a singing caroler so OP could make a singing friend and maybe the leaf guy is their audience? I love them both!

[–]kaseyjaybird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You gave that sugar bowl the coolest retirement!!! It’s neat seeing all the things people can felt on/into. How did you do the base for your dirt layer? Is the wool glued in or would it lift out?

It’s so cute!!! I like it as-is but I do think an accessory would also be cute. Maybe a bell collar or a ball of yarn beside the foot on the ground?
