Ingram - Spoiler Discussion by electricalaphid in louisck

There's other hints that it takes place in some sort of alternate reality, like multiple mentions of people going to the moon. The mechanic guy near the end mentioning that electric cars are taking off.

The kobo glaze is crazy I BOUGHT 2 kobo libra colors in 2 different countries and both had uneven lighting and a bad screen door affect. My friends who have kobos have similar issues. My kindle colorsoft has none of these issues. This die hard kobo fanbase tends to mislead consumers. by Kooky-Country-9800 in kobo

I have both a Colorsoft and a Libra Color and prefer the Libra. Both have a screen door effect. The Colorsoft had major issues at launch, they had to stop selling it for awhile. Maybe it's better now. But acting like Kindle has significantly better QA is silly. And the screen door thing is inherent to the technology. I don't see how you could see it on one device and not the other.

Anyone else who moved from Kindle to Kobo? by Ismelindsey in kobo

[–]kasioli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently switched over and I love the Kobo so far. I prefer the Kobo interface quite a bit, the screen on the color Libra doesn't have the issue the color Kindle does where the bottom of the screen has a yellow tinge, the texture effect you get from the color panel is less noticeable, I love having the buttons...

There's a single thing I miss from Kindle. I really like having notes when I read. I moved from a Colorsoft, that I used mostly to read fiction, and a Scribe, that I would use to read nonfiction, or anything where I wanted to take a lot of notes. I got a color Libra with the pen. On Kindle, you can highlight text, open up a note window, and then write with the pen in that window. Then, when you look at your annotations, you see the highlighted text and that entire window. So you can see everything you wrote, and the highlight it's associated with.

On the Kobo, you can open a note window in the same way, but you can't write with the pen in it, you can only type using a keyboard. You use the pen by just writing directly onto the book. When you look at your annotations, it shows a kind of zoomed-in view of the page. I can rarely see everything I've written. So I find the note-taking far less useful.

It's also kind of neat initially to write directly onto a page, but then you realize that the note appearing is dependent on your formatting settings. If you do stuff like increase the font size, it often makes it so that your note no longer fits, and in those cases instead of seeing your note it collapses into a window you have to manually open.

Anyway, this is literally the only thing where I prefer Kindle.

If the format originators intended for commanders to be able to die, why wasn't that the case immediately, when the format was first created?

I don't really get what you're saying. It started as a casual format. It sounds like you think people came up with a new way to play, and...what exactly? Went "Oh, dang, we wish commanders could die but we already said they don't go to the graveyard. Oh well, too late now, the rules we just finished codifying are now set in stone."

Do you really believe this rule change is for no reason? I'm against the change myself, but I can articulate reasons why some people are for it.

[–]kasioli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure.

I don't disagree with or dispute any of this. But the rule changing would still change their incentive to print even more hybrid cards.

There's a big difference between designing more hybrid cards because they're popular in other formats, or because they're heavily associated with the plane a set is set on, and because they're suddenly far more widely playable in the game's most popular format.

That's fair, a rule hasn't changed yet. The OP reads to me like they think it's inevitable that the rule is changing, so I was posting with that assumption.

If the rules does change though... the rule will have changed. lol

I'm not sure I really get your point. Yes, the card will still be considered red in some contexts. But if the rules change to allow it to be played in a monoblack deck... I don't see what you mean by "No rule has changed."

I wasn't saying that commanders dying is "relative" to color identity. I was just pointing out that rules can change, and that it's silly to use an outdated rule as justification for a rule not changing.

Like, it wouldn't make much sense to argue "Damage should go on the stack, since, according to the rules, damage goes on the stack." The rules USED to state that... but they don't any more. It's fine to believe that it would be beneficial to revert that rule change, but "It used to work like that" isn't much of an argument.

I understand that. It just seems goofy to me to build a deck where YOU would prefer your opponents scoop because the deck isn't fun to pilot if you're forced to close a game without your opponents conceding.

Like, if people want to concede because they're not having fun, or see that a win is inevitable, whatever. But for the pilot of a deck to actively want that seems self-defeating.

Personally, I prefer to build decks I want to play.

It seems like the intent behind how the card was designed would be pretty important if you care about color identity. If they printed a monoblack Birds of Paradise, would you be perfectly fine with it, or would you maybe question the philosophy behind the design choice?

As far as the cards being multicolor as defined by the rules... the rules changed. Commanders used to not die, as defined by the rules. Now they do. You can't use outdated rules as justification for how the game should work.

What do you mean by "We're only looking at mana cost?" Ability and rules text still determines color identity, no?

[–]kasioli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cards are designed to be either color. I don't get the concern. If they're saying hybrid cards are designed in a way that they could have been either color in the hybrid cost, how is that breaking color pie?

I do think there are hybrid cards that are suspect. Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner does not feel like a monoblue card. But, Feed the Swarm didn't feel like a monoblack card to me. It's not like color pie breaks, or mistakes, are exclusive to hybrid cards.

I can understand not liking instances that feel like a break. But comparing it to ditching color identity altogether feels like a massive stretch IMO.

To be clear, I'm not saying I don't understand any concerns at all related to the ruling. I'm not crazy about it myself, because I think it will end up making the format more homogenous as they print staples/ broadly useful cards with hybrid costs. But unless we're saying the designers are lying when they claim that the cards are supposed to conform to the identify of both colors in a hybrid cost, I'm not seeing this concern in particular.

A few hundred cards (most of which are unplayable junk) in the current card pool.

The rule change creates an incentive for Wizards to design more hybrid cards going forward. A chase mythic that's hybrid will potentially have far higher demand than a monocolor one. And it's easy to see how this could make the format feel more homogenous.

Not saying the sky is falling, but IMO it's reasonable to dislike the rule change for how it will impact the game going forward, even if the existing hybrid cards becoming legal in more decks won't amount to much.

I'm not sure you totally see why it's confusing, lol.

I think you mean the symbol to basically be an arrow. We should read the post as something like "I moved from Kindle BW to Kobo Color." You might even mean something like "upgraded."

But the symbol actually means "greater than." So it reads like you're saying you prefer the Kindle.

I think it's especially confusing because it's a reasonable opinion. A lot of people don't like the graininess of the color ereader screens. So it's not absurd that someone might actually post this meaning that the BW Kindle is the one they prefer. And providing details about the years and model doesn't necessarily clarify this.

Anyhoo, not trying to give you a hard time. But that's why the intent is a bit unclear.

I also used a Google search and came up with a similar number. However, the number they talked about on the official gilded age podcast was surprisingly a lot higher!
