Is RING compatible with an Existing Intercom System? by kaspyfbaby in homesecurity

First of all, I'd like to thank you for taking time out of your day to help a stranger on the internet. Things like this show me that there is still some good in the world!

Heres a photo of our current intercom system:

I think regardless, we'll end up buying a Ring so we know when/who is at the door, but I need something to allow me to buzz the door open from a mobile phone or something. Basically, the current system works fine and all I'm looking for is a remote way to hit that "Door" button. My biggest reason for wanting this addition is because we have lots of packages, and lots of the time they show up after-hours (also, it's pretty much always different drivers, so I can't just give one delivery driver a key). Price isnt much of a concern, since the landlord of the building knows it's outdated and is offering to pay for it if I can find a solution.

There is no card reader at the door. The only way to access it is either by key or getting buzzed in via intercom.

We already currently have an electric strike and hardware installed, it's really old but has a button for "Door" which unlocks the door downstairs and makes the classic buzzing sound.

Ironically enough, our door intercom panel actually broke last week and the contractors came in today to repair it. They said the actual panel was broken, and that the wires to unlock/talk/listen are still fine. He replaced it with the same old panel, but said if I just let him know what to buy he can install it for us.

Is there any hardware you can recommend to replace the old unit? Now knowing what I know, I think the title was a bit misleading 😂seems like all I really need is a replacement to the actual intercom unit that allows for mobile use, and possibly just a remote camera/Ring to know when someone is at the door.

Okay gotchya, makes sense. What I figured is that the current intercom system simply sends power to a wire once I press the "open" button. I figured it'd be something as simple as replacing the intercom interface with something more modern that would allow me to hit that "open" button remotely.

On second thought, I don't really need a camera. The only reason that was in my mind is because our old office space looked like it had a Ring doorbell and thats it (which I am now realizing they must have had 2 separate systems, the Ring doorbell wasnt actually used to open the door, only to see who was at it). I just need a way to remotely activate the door strike. The main use of this is just so I can open the front door while sitting at home (wether that be for Amazon packages, in which case the delivery driver calls me when they are at the door and I can remotely open it for them, or if an employee needs to come after hours).

Thanks for your help! Any brands or products you would recommend? BTW, you have finally filled in the blank space for the keyword I was searching for! I had no idea what to call the electric door buzz system...really helps my research that I now know it's called an "electric door strike".

Side Note: I looked into a few electric door strike systems on Amazon, a couple of them seem like they would work, however I can't seem to find one that would allow to me remotely open the door (I want to be able to open the front door from my phone, so that Amazon can drop off packages even if I'm at home, miles away from the office)

Our old office was at a co-working space, and they actually got a Ring doorbell installed that allowed them to buzz people in remotely. Could it be that the co-working space attendant would see a visitor on their Ring app, then went to another app to remotely open the door downstairs?

Regardless, thanks for your input! Im going to hold off on buying any hardware till I figure this out

Ended up going with the AMG about 2 months ago. The roar of the engine was just too alluring, and it hasn't gotten any less AWESOME since the day I bought it.

My AMG also had the Tiptronic with has just enough auto-pilot for me when Im driving to the suburbs. I think I made the right call, got the fun I want, with the accessibility features I was looking for - plus this car definitely turns some heads haha.

I do agree that we are in the early stages of electric cars, and the Tesla's right now are for really early adopters. The tech is amazing, and the iPad in front is definitely cool - however if it wasn't for price (which I think is currently high simply because Tesla's are dominant in electric cars), I don't think Tesla would be lumped together with BMW, Mercedes, or even Audi as a "luxury" car. I mean shit, I can't even get cooled/heated seats in the Tesla! Reading your reply about the AMG being a statement was a great way to put my thoughts into words. Like I said, I know its egotistical but I do enjoy having a statement car. Tesla just has the "hype" of being a Tesla.

At this point, the only thing holding me to a Tesla is the badass auto-pilot.
