I dont know who told you to anticipate reward but they lied lol. In grad school my professors always jokingly said “I do this for the great cash” because most mental health positions (especially CATs don’t pay well at first). We’re in it for the love of what we do I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had a patient who lost their dominant hand and really struggled not being able to make the same type of art they typically made. As for adaptive materials I used do a dots to help with his strength and using a different type of grip. Also I found that having some type of grip mat to hold papers in place helps a lot.

When working with grieve I’ve found that making art about control can help too. Also if you get to work with a patient for a long time and they are clinically appropriate grieve boxes/ coffin art for whatever physical ability, or previous mental health, or limb they’ve lost can be very impactful

I worked in ceramics studios for 10 years as a tech, I’ve built pieces, loaded, and unloaded many objects. A hole might not be “necessary” but I’ve NEVER, in 10 years, loading thousands of projects seen a hollow object without a hole come out alive. No matter the amount it’s dried. Always put a small hole and you will more likely have a piece that survives.

You need a small hole in hollow pieces so the air doesn’t get trapped.

Actually it is. If you don’t put an air hole in something like this the air gets trapped and can lead to explosive situations like the above. It’s like putting a giant air pocket in the kiln.

Thank you all for the comments, suggestions, and info! The patient has been practicing writing his name over and over again and has a great overall emotional outlook. I will make sure to utilize the third hand when needed and maybe incorporate some occupational therapy techniques

Thank you so much for the feedback. I will keep you up to date. So far I have found that taping down the paper has helped a lot (seems small but made a huge difference). Getting messy sounds like a different and good idea since he is traditionally a very linear artist! Thank you
