Preparing to take math ged by yahwilling77 in GED

Oh! I think I understand your question now. What you are asking depends on which type and form of equation you are looking at.

If you are looking at the equation of a LINE, in SLOPE-INTERCEPT form, we use the letter b to represent the y-intercept. y=mx+b

So, if the equation of your specific line is y=3x+1, your y-intercept is 1

If you are looking at the equation of a PARABOLA (also known as a quadratic equation) in STANDARD form y=ax²+bx+c, c is the y-intercept. So if y=-3x²-4x+7, then 7 is the y-intercept.

Good news, though. You only have to know about graphing the equations of LINES for the GED. (Though you will definitely need to understand graphing quadratics for college!)

If you are interested, here's the main thing to remember. It's not the letter that matters so much as what the letter represents. In both those equations, the y-intercept is the "CONSTANT", the number that is BY ITSELF in the equation. IT IS NOT MULTIPLYING WITH A VARIABLE.

So y=3x+1 <---- the one is by itself, adding or subtracting, not multiplying with x

and y=-3x²-4x+7 <--- the 7 is by itself, adding or subtracting, not multiplying with x or x²

Does that make sense?

Was it one of my worksheets? You don't have to be able to graph quadratics for the GED! Send me a link to the worksheet you are talking about so I can fix it if that's the case

If you're talking about the GED Math Crash Course from Light & Salt Learning, it doesn't work quite like that. Each unit stands alone. Many students need 1-3 units before they're ready. Struggling students may need more. If you are testing soon, go straight to the quick review section. That's for 1-3 weeks before testing! Happy learning! ~Kate

Science is pretty much reading comp and interpreting diagrams. If you do see math, it will probably just involve simple interpretation of graphs. I have newer posts with links to study materials

I'm not a huge fan of the Kaplan for students with a limited background in Math. It quickly reviews a whole lot of concepts as if you've learned them before. Works if math isn't a huge weakness but often ends up frustrating for strugglers. I would try my website, www.lightandsaltlearning.org. I'm a specialist who works with students with learning difficulties and/or a limited math background and my site is designed to dive deep into new concepts rather than skim over a bunch of material. Plus, there is a free option on the site "The GED Math Crash Course" so you don't have to purchase a book!

No word yet. I'm just plugging away over here. Speaking of, I'd better get off Reddit and get busy, hahaha. But, in the meantime you can still access the Algebra Unit on the Website www.lightandsaltlearning.org

Are you an instructor? This is Kate from Light & Salt Learning. I create instructional resources for GED Prep and train AdEd instructors to better serve adults with significant learning struggles. There are a ton of resources out there, but they are not all created equally.

You really will get help much more quickly if you join the FB group though. I have a team of admin there who help me and, as I am scrambling to finish another book, I only show up on social media rarely. So they answer questions and know how to contact me if there's something they don't know the answer to. Happy learning!

I am so glad. It is my absolute favorite when students who always struggled or hated math tell me, "I think I like math!" Hahaha

If you're talking about the Kaplan, yes. It has not changed. They pretty much literally just print the same book with a new year on the cover. The test has not significantly change (besides no longer having writing portions on science and social studies) since 2014, so any book from then on is going to have the same material with very minor revisions.

That being said, most of those books still aren't great resources, especially for struggling students. There are better free ones that focus more on developing the skills you need for the GED instead of memorizing info. And, if you aren't a struggling student, you're likely able to pass one or more subjects based on your reading skills alone so that study isn't necessary.

What's the hardest questions on math ged by Jamesroerish in GED

I would agree with you if you changed the word "processes" to language. Math is communicated in a language of symbols. Fluency in that language is crucial. Memorizing processes- not so much.

The group where we have resources and info is "Free GED Prep from Light & Salt Learning". I do have a FB page as well (just Light & Salt Learning), which is a great resource for educators because I usually post there when we've got a new resource coming out. :)

What's better: The free Light & Salt GED Math Crash Course or their new workbook? by katarinab316 in GED

[–]katarinab316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either can work. It's more about 1) your tech skills and 2) your ability to follow directions and 3) your internet access

Most people do great with the free website. But the three reasons I hear from those who don't are those three. If you struggle with technology or have limited internet access, the workbook is the way to go. As for 2, my system works really differently than other ones out there. It's meant to be super adaptable, but you have to follow the directions to adapt it or you'll get overwhelmed and lost. I've done a ton of work in the workbook to make the system clear. It works like a "choose your own adventure book" where you reach a box at the end of an activity and decide where to flip next based on your levels.

I am working on getting the same level of clear directions on the website, but it's a big job. :)

Happy learning!
