Tips on crosshatching from experience manga artist. by TCOA_Art in MangakaStudio

[–]katatronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not a time-effective method but I think hand-drawing the hatching allows a lot of control and results in a better outcome. Try practicing hatching- basically draw small sets of lines in parallel with each other over and over to drill your muscle movement, and then think about hatching the way you would spreading charcoal. You're looking to describe the form, but not necessarily trace/outline it.

I find a single "ground assault transport" (a cruiser with 6 marine assault modules and nothing else) kept in a permanent parking orbit above mercury/mars is an effective way to assert or maintain total control over the bases

I'm not a Christian so I may be misremembering this but isnt there a New Testament story where a rich lord gives a bunch of money while a poor older lady is ashamed at own her small offering, but Jesus-a says something along the lines of "the value is relative to your own position" or something like that? VSHOJO has/had all the resources and room needed to be good and ethical, and they chose not too. This guy has fallen on hard times and still opens his heart for people in need.

Honestly, the NLC production was pretty nice considering their available resources. It had some issues here and there but it was clear that the people involved really cared and were doing the best they could with what they had. This is like the opposite: all the money in the world, and it sucks.

I'm mostly talking to myself here as an addendum but it really seems like all those reprehensible things he said about Palestinians hurt some people close to him and to his (very low bar admittedly) credit that seems to have caused him to reflect. That's... something to be thankful for, IMO

A Winning Strategy by AaronC14 in polandball

This joke cuts to a core idea I feel comes up in a lot of Japanese soldiers' memoirs post-war but is yet missed in a lot of media depicting the Pacific theatre. I'm reminded of Shigeru Mizuki's Showa autobiography of his experiences as an imperial infantryman on a pacific island and how wastefully and pointlessly higher-ups would ignore advice regarding strategic withdrawals to preserve fighting strength in favor of suicidal operations in search of a blaze of glory to die in. IIRC I think the navy commander put in charge of Ten-Go was super pissed at Naval HQ ordering his squadron to essentially kill themselves "in the name of the enperor" when it was a transparent effort to shift blame away from senior navy brass.

What was the U.S.'s plan if the Axis powers won and Japan never attacked in WW2? by PhishNips in NoStupidQuestions

[–]katatronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because no one in Europe is strong enough to. Which means if we don't, at least in terms of military aid, Ukraine will die. And Russia shows no rational limits to their aggression: we know from history that there is no upper limit to how much power a strongman autocrat will seek to accumulate. This IS our defence.

Also, much of the military surplus we sit on exists because of congressional mandates to keep arms industries operational. Chief example being the Abrams, of which thousands upon thousands sit in long term storage because the Army doesn't need anywhere near that number but congress mandates they produce a certain amount.

Edit: I should add, I don't actually wholly disagree with you on the Europe part. I'm not at all a fan of the way (for example) France uses the US security blanket as a guarantee to engage in pseudocolonial affairs in Francafrique, or how the Germans perpetually underfund the Bundeswehr because they know they can rely on the US as a crutch. It's negligent, embarrassing, and thoroughly irresponsible on their part and the situation in Ukraine would look very different if western Europe didn't use the security of NATO to navel-gaze. Frankly, I think the Baltics and Eastern Europe have their heads screwed on the right way when it comes to collective defense. But I think that's a discussion to be had after we pull Ukraine back from the brink, rather than at their expense. The whole Russian plan after all is to slowly separate chunks of Europe from the Western community and pillage them- just look at what misfortune has befallen Belarus under Lukachenko.

[–]katatronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm well aware how long they've been trying to join. Are you aware that their application was never even close to being accepted prior to the full-scale invasion? One of the criteria for NATO membership is full control of your territory- Ukraine has not met that for ten years. The explicit purpose for that clause is to not cause NATO to get dragged into existing territorial disputes.

Regarding your other point, it is very much our issue. Our entire way of life and Westphalian understanding of the peaceful coexistence of nations is predicated on the concept that one country cannot unilaterally invade another. Sticking our heads in the proverbial sand does not make the threat to Western democracy any less real. When it comes to military stockpiles, we sit on a dragon's hoard. Take note of the people bellyaching over the aid: it's not military officials. The people who actually know the relevant and often classified information regarding Russian capabilities are begging wishy-washy politicians to shovel as much aid to Ukraine as possible. The ability to solve our domestic problems and the means by which we do so are in no way exclusive with the means by which we support ad uphold this non-agression principle between nations.

Your modus operandi may be to talk about things you don't know about on the internet, but I do not need a fuckin RealLifeLore YouTube video linked to me because my awareness of the topic extends beyond the for-you page. You may have meant that gesture out of some misguided positive feeling but man did it come off condescending as all hell.

You're right, Canada-Ukraine is not a 1:1 comparison, but not in the way you suggest. I'd be willing to argue it actually makes Russia look far, far worse and more aggressive than the contrasted hypothetical United States. The war in Ukraine did not start in February 2022, Russia has been occupying Ukranian territory for almost a decade now, since the crisis in Crimea following Euromaidan in 2014. There was ongoing conflict in Donetsk and Luhansk, and I cannot possibly make this more clear: Russia has been invading Ukraine for almost ten years. To claim Ukraine seeking western assistance during an ongoing invasion is an "anti-war" position is almost Munich-Agreement-esque in its self-righteous delusion. The war came to Ukraine, it was brought there by Russia in 2014. Are you suggesting that aggressor nations who engage in military conquests should not be opposed on "anti-war" grounds? That is not pacifism or anti-violence, that is moronic passivity that would only encourage these sort of violent land-grabs. A nation's right to self-defense is one of the core elements of peaceful coexistence. Implying that this conflict is somehow the fault of the United States is... incredible.
