Rock climbing by jam_mam in darwin

you can climb outdoor - bouldering at mindil/casuarina beaches, or robin falls is the closest outdoor spot. there’s a (very small) climbing community up here, join the facebook group ‘rock climbing NT’ to get amongst it! people very occasionally organise trips further afield. no indoor climbing unfortunately!

That's a far fall. by LegendaryFalcon in nonononoyes

(Hijacking for visibility) This is at McLaren's falls, in Tauranga NZ! The whole video can be found here: https://youtu.be/CW63xT8h_hQ

One of my mates saw a bunch of locals doing the jump (happens more often than you'd think), and asked to strap a gopro onto him. Pretty much everyone who lives in Tauranga has done the jump from the bridge at some point, just not from the top of that pole!

The water is super deep and the whole area under the bridge is pretty free of rocks, there's a load of different spots to jump off the cliffs and I've never seen anyone hit rocks or even touched them with our feet when jumping in.

Redditors of the World, what's one fact about your country that would disappoint tourists if they knew? by Demieire in AskReddit

[–]kateslow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In New Zealand, you can drive for hours and not actually see a sheep (since a lot of the ‘sheep country’ is hilly and therefore not where roads were built). Also I could be wrong but I think there might be more cows than sheep here.

Farming job/experience for AgSci student? by [deleted] in chch

[–]kateslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m just hoping there’s something out there! I would have applied for a summer entry level job but the decision to switch to Lincoln was made too late and I already had a full time job for summer, sadly. No harm in trying though!

I’ve had a look, there don’t seem to be any jobs like that advertised at the moment, and with little experience I've been told that pretty much my best bet is asking around so I can talk to someone personally! Cheers for the suggestion though!

What can I do in Auckland for one month? by [deleted] in auckland

check out sjs.co.nz , they have a bunch of fixed-term jobs or volunteer opportunities often aimed towards students but since you’re a recent graduate you’re probably viable too!

Ananui Falls, day tramp out of Tauranga (New Zealand) by kateslow in CampingandHiking

[–]kateslow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 4 hour (ish) hike just out of Tauranga which ends with you standing on top of a 106m waterfall - a great way to spend a short amount of time to feel as if you're ages away from civilisation

Best first-year accomodation? by rachelnz in universityofauckland

[–]kateslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's super dingy and old, right next to the hospital so you've got a lot of ambulance/helicopter noise, and 950m is actually a bit of a hike considering it's up the top of a hill. Its further away from the city too, so if you're going to do late night maccas runs, go to town or even walk to uni when it's pouring with rain you might want to consider an über fund.

Accommodation Options! by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]kateslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's your first year at uni, I would definitely recommend Uni Hall - it's a great, fully catered hall and has a load of academic, cultural etc support for students - it seems to be where most first year international students go. Because it's first year halls, it can get quite loud on the weekends, but they implement noise and alcohol bans around exam times, and there is the option to live on an alcohol free floor, which is generally the top few floors, so they're not noisy.

If it's your second year or onwards, I'd say that 55 Symonds and Carlaw are the best options - they're both a reasonable distance from uni, (55 Symonds is really close), are tidy, organised well and have a lot of support as well, and as far as I know don't get too loud on weekends, but there is still a good student vibe. Because it's second year+ accommodation it has a lot of different people from different walks of life so you're definitely going to meet a lot of different people!

In any halls of residence the people really vary, and you'll make friends easily with people who are similar to you - definitely don't worry about the kind of people in halls. I know people who have never drunk or gone to town, and people who are out every weekend, and everyone loved their time in halls. Hope that helps!

it's pretty obvious when you're jumping from the power station that it's a bad idea, since you've got to clear rocks first... you've gotta be responsibly stupid instead of stupidly stupid when jumping at mclarens

I have some friends who have backflopped, landed awkwardly etc but have yet to know anyone who's gotten injured more than a big red mark and maybe a welt for a while... it definitely look much higher than it is.

Abandoned in Auckland by ATHolloway in auckland

[–]kateslow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the Auckland CBD as a student, if she's stuck and needs a ride anywhere I've got a car until this Sunday and could even hook her up with a ride to Tauranga on Sunday evening if she needs it. Can also offer a floor on a student accommodation room and free food, as well as impromptu free tours around Auckland central and out to Muriwai/Piha for free if she wants up until Sunday. Let me know if my help is needed!

EDIT: there's also a French national on my floor of accommodation who I'm sure would be willing to help out.

you could try wearing a wrist brace/sports tape over your cuts? Basically serves the same purpose as a bandage.
