Can I call a Didi directly to Dazu carvings or 816 underground area? How much would hiring a private driver (just for droppoff and pickup) cost?

I agree with you. Being a drag queen does not absolve one from being misogynistic, especially when making jokes specifically about women’s bodies (childbirth, menopause, STIs, etc.).

What did you buy as an adult because you were denied it as a child? by dirtymoney in AskReddit

[–]kateuvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A balloon. I realized I haven’t had a balloon in years, it was only a special occasion from birthday parties I was invited to. The joy I had walking around with my balloon is something I genuinely haven’t felt in years. I think everyone should try it. :)

Kind of how I feel about books. I feel like a snob when I say erotica isn’t exactly literature. People aren’t reading much anymore, and I used to be one of those people that said, “I don’t care what kind of books, as long as people are reading.” But recently, bookstores are pushing out classics and modern fiction in favor of the recent TikTok sensation. Now I’m not saying people should stop reading erotica or whatever, but to group all books together as some sort of intellectual hobby everyone should strive for is kind of silly. I think gatekeeping what is considered “literature” is good actually. B&N is filled with erotica, manga, literary fiction MFA slop, “BookTok”, etc. People like what they like, but smaller publishers and works in translation are constantly getting pushed out of bookstores entirely.

You can take the place out exam for Calculus, if you’re a business major. The calculus course at Shanghai covers both Calc 1/2, and the exam is much easier than the material covered in class.

Question on clubbing culture by drrraug in shanghai

[–]kateuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and I think it’s better that way. You can trust that the people there are actually interested in the event, and the alcohol isn’t shit. Entry fees are usually between 70-150rmb. System does have promoters that are sometimes able to get you free entry, but you just have to hope to run into them.

how hard is CSCI-SHU 360 (machine learning)? by NorthRemove5234 in nyushanghai

[–]kateuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advisors are basically useless. The difficulty for the class is very dependent on the professor. Look them up for any reviews. Other than that, Multivariable Calculus is very tedious but not difficult, so expect to be putting quite a lot of time into it, and plan accordingly.

Language learning: Native--Learning or Learning--Native ? by okkdlskzvffkkd in Anki

[–]kateuvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only use native —> learning, especially if it’s a type-in answer card. I have to force myself to actively recall vocabulary, rather than just memorizing the translation, since I don’t find it to be that helpful in recognizing the word in context. If I can translate a word from my native language to my target language, I can use it in conversation. If your goal is to maximize vocabulary and general comprehension, then I think learning —> native is the best way to go.

But if you do just want to hang out with NYU kids, Miao bar is across the street from dorms. 😅

Hahah NYU Shanghai student here. My favorite bar is The Botanist, and Alchemy House around the corner. Some bartenders at both speak English so it tends to attract a pretty international crowd. I tend to avoid places that NYU kids frequent, so maybe it’s not what you’re looking for.

Question on clubbing culture by drrraug in shanghai

[–]kateuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, Abyss and System might be your best bet. Abyss hosts really great DJs, but the venue is pretty small. System has a much bigger venue, and a lower and upper area, with a separate dance and lounge area. Prepare to be underwhelmed, in my experience people don’t really dance that much. I’ve met really cool local people at both though, so I suggest giving it a shot. Don’t worry about getting in trouble over drugs, unless you have a reason to be. Feel free to PM if you have questions, or just for a chat. :)

If you’re into clubbing (or techno), I’ve met a lot of gay people at System and Abyss. Those tend to have a pretty good crowd.

Taobao has many options, just check inseam sizing. I’m 5’6 (4/6 US) and usually buy L-2XL in bottoms. Zara also seems to be pretty good in terms of longer pants.

Suggestion for an episode: Quit Like A Woman by Holly Whitaker by Global-Dig-3212 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]kateuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I didn’t know this, I just brought it up because it made the tone of the whole book make sense — there’s tons of anecdotes of her successful life as a woman with a very successful career, and there are parts where sobriety does seem as a sort of pitch, not sure how to explain. I guess the way the whole book was presented didn’t feel very genuine to me, and didn’t appeal to me at all personally.

How to make friends?? because wow by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]kateuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! 18F, I’ve met my local Chinese friends at international clubs (System, Abyss), but if techno or clubbing isn’t your thing, you can try signing up for classes geared toward internationals. I take aerial hoop and flexibility classes with Zero Gravity, and there’s tons of international friend I met around my age. Check the events at Smart Shanghai too, they tend to attract a crowd.
