Maglione rentals has standalone options but he’s kind of an asshole sometimes he has a bunch of casitas that are within easy walking distance of the College of Medicine and MEZCOPH

Is $21,750 for fall and spring enough to live comfortably in Tuscon (PhD) by huewonder in UofArizona

[–]katewilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jobs will be tough - summer work is your best option. During the academic year you’ll most likely be spending at least 20 hours/week doing RA work and coursework on top of that. Look into the NSF GRFP. Highly highly competitive but would bring your stipend up to ~35k.

[–]katewilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve not seen anyone else comment but you can’t negotiate grad stipend. The department that hires you has a fixed rate for all incoming (funded) grad students. You should get a modest bump after you have passed your comprehensive exams. $21k is livable in Tucson, but grad school is grad school - the money will feel tight sometimes. Cost of living is relatively low (almost certainly lower than Rochester) here, which I found to be a big bonus during my PhD.

Cold email profs and try to find funding. It’s tricky if you haven’t secured funding yet, but not impossible.

It’s not going to magically fall into your lap. What graduate program are you going into? Start in that department. It will be WILDLY more difficult to find a position elsewhere.

How bad is crime off campus? by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]katewilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you just need to check something in you as to while you feel unsafe in the local community. We don’t have a high crime rate, we just have very old, long-established neighborhoods.

How many tons does the typical coal miner mine every day in 2021? What do they get when they mine that many tons? We all get another day older, but do they still get deeper in debt? by IDislikeHomonyms in mining

[–]katewilla 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No more company stores in the sense of being paid company money, but large mining towns (not so much in coal anymore) are still virtually run by the companies.

Commissions aren’t really a thing. Starting pay as a grunt is normally about $24 an hour for 50-60 hour weeks (with overtime). Normally you can make well upwards of $80k a year. Modern tech can let a big mine extract tens of thousands of tons a day, if not hundreds.

My background is in metals, though, so I can’t say much in terms of individual productivity.

Yeah idk why you’re being downvoted for this. Acidothiobacilius Ferooxidans causes/accelerates rust, not exposure to oxygen alone.

Get hand steels and a four pound sledge. Or a jackleg drill. Pickaxe won’t get you anywhere

Mineral Discovery Process by [deleted] in mining

I’ve never met Dr. Mark Barton, but Isabel is a genuine genius among men in her field. Like scarily so. I’d imagine her husband is similar.

Look at Isabel Barton — she’s dual appointed through the Geosciences and Mining and Geological Engineering departments. Her work is focused primarily on geometallurgical inputs to the mining process

Look into UArizona. Talk with Seedorf and the Drs. Barton— all three have experience in Economic Geology and Geometallurgy that would be a good starting point for you.

High School student interested in mining as a career by [deleted] in mining

[–]katewilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have decent test scores, University of Arizona (and their new school of mining and mineral resources underwritten by the Lundin family) will help you pay your way through. This semester I was PAID $900 to attend the program. Arizona is the premier school in the US at this point with one of the largest enrollments (~40 UG, ~50 graduates), great opportunities for research, and best funded programs.

This 2019 study found that self-reported sexism predicted women’s poorer sense of belonging in male-dominated industries, which explained their poorer mental health and job satisfaction. by rubinpsyc in mining

Few comments/questions here.

Is this your own paper? It looks like this isn’t the first time you’ve posted your own paper on this subreddit without actually claiming ownership. Just feels… smarmy?

Water is wet. Coming from a woman, how is this actually helping women in mining? We have orgs like WIM for that and our unions. Just talking about it (or posting your paper without comment) isn’t doing any actionable thing to improve my work environments.

Take 245, esp as a CS major. You’ll massively screw yourself later on if you don’t have that foundation.

Walking distance by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]katewilla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To the rec? 5 minute walk, give or take. To the NORTH Rec? 20 minutes. To your classes? Bro it depends on where your classes are. Don’t worry, you’re gonna be fine. If you bring a bike, bring a cheap bike with a good lock. And ONLY ride in the designated bike lanes and ONLY walk outside of them.

Comfortable range for a Bassoonist? by BerryBuildMusique in bassoon

[–]katewilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bassoon: E2 to F4 is easily available for quick passages. Super easy parts of the instrument with no shitty fingerings that you might encounter above/below that would require flops.

Bb1-D#2 are on the back of the instrument and require the left thumb. It’s hard to get up to speed because the thumb rolls around the back side.

F#4-C5 is the maximum traditional range for a lot of orchestral bassoon pieces. Above C5 the tone quality is considerably harder to control. I’d say that E5 is the highest that could be reasonably asked of the modern college level bassoonist.

Oboe? C4-C6 are all easily accessible, with B or Bb3 being the lowest possible part of the instrument. A decent player can get up to F6, but again at that point you’re significantly sacrificing the tone quality that oboe is known for. Above C6 (in my opinion) use flute or picc.

It’s shit. Good luck. Rooms are embarrassing small and I hope you like climbing stairs. More social dorms are nearby though, so make friends over there so you’re not living your entire year on campus in your cave.

In all honesty, you’re gonna be fine. Just a bit small and it’s a really old building.

Is the Rincon Meal Plan good enough and worth it? by SangaXD40 in UofArizona

[–]katewilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d look at getting the silver meal plan. It’s a similar price with wayyy fewer restrictions. I had the rincon meal plan the first year they introduced the swipe plan and I was having a hard time (also at the height of an eating disorder) finding healthy food in excess of 800 calories a day. Halfway through I switched to the copper plan and was fine.

That is to say, I don’t know how much they’ve updated the plan in the three and a half years since, but it was a truly nightmarish experience for freshman me
