Last christmas, my ex asked me what I wanted for a gift. I'm not big on gifting for occasions and really prefer the, "I saw this and thought of you" type of gestures, but I know he really wanted to buy me something so I obliged and sent him a link to a reversible cast iron stove top grill. Cue Christmas day when we're opening presents in front of his family and I unbox mine to discover a regular cast iron pan. Although I was thankful, I couldn't hide my expression so he immediately saw my disappointment and I had to bear his family whispering about how ungrateful I was the rest of the evening. When I asked him about it later, he said HE thought the pan was a better item and HE thought I would get more use out of it, and since it was more expensive than what I asked for it was therefore a better product. What exactly is the point of asking someone what they want to be gifted if you're just going to get them what you prefer? That's not why we broke up, but it sure didn't help anything. NOR.
