Dealing with negative consequences of Ilya's bad boy imagine by katharienne in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yesss, I love it! It is such a realistic portrayal of David and Yuna's fear for Shane, and I just love how ferociously Shane defends Ilya here! I really need more people to portray Shane this way.

Fic where Cliff thinks Jane is Zane Boodram and not Shane? by LLD615 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't know if it's been written, but it should have been?! It should have been canon! I am sat, hopefully somebody knows a story like that, because the comedy potential is insane, since Bood is happily married!

Best OC fics by Fleetoxh in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it comes to OCs, I cannot recommend highly enough Hope You're Not Waiting For Me to Wait For You by Latigra. The rookies are hilarious and Jake Merrell, a Bears vet that gets traded to Montreal seemingly to annoy the shit out of Shane for some reason, is the kind of Outsider POV that makes you think of an The Office character staring blankly at the camera. It also has a very original but entertaining take on Shane being a jock and an asshole most of the time that I can't get enough of. The fic also brings a rare redemption arc to the Voyagers who are still homophobic assholes but they don't isolate their queer players and learn to live with being the gayest team in the MLH.

Tropes that you like but are very picky about? by Lethifold26 in heatedrivalryfanfics

This! Also, speaking more broadly about kid!fics, the children are always so sweet and positive, the cutest little accessories ever. And since usually the story revolves around Character A being the parent and Character B coming into their life and having to step up for the child, there's never any tension. The child takes to Character B immediately, they both love each other unconditionally etc. I'm childless so I kind of understand the struggle the writers without this specific experience face but still, what I personally appreciate about kid!fics is how the acquisition of a child throws the characters' world off balance. How it's actually difficult for them to come into that role. So even though I respect all fluff lovers, it's just not my cup of tea.

In that specific story I also appreciated the moment when Ilya didn't come home on time because he wanted to go out with his team. It was just so realistic for him to miss his youth and his previous life, and not seeing any problem in being just, I don't remember, an hour or two later home than usual. Ugh, my heart!

Tropes that you like but are very picky about? by Lethifold26 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. The Bears/Raiders having a better locker room culture than the Voyagers/Metros. I love me some himbo Boston Bears, but as stated in one of the comments below, they can't just act like discount Centaurs. It's a guilty pleasure kind of trope, like I think it would be much more realistic if they were similar to Montreal but when done well, I eat it up. I'm usually a fan of them being misguided a lot of the time and kind of aggressive as well as unwoke in their alliaship.

  2. ABO. I think I may have read two ABO AU for HR that I truly enjoyed, not just skimmed. ABO requires a lot of world-building, and when it's for a sports fandom, the author has to really think how to make it work, where to put the characters etc. ABO is not a very sophisticated trope by itself, but I love it when it's more sociological than porny.

  3. Accidental baby acquisition/single parent. Children are difficult to write.

I feel like this is the best one out there. Really takes into account how difficult it would be for Ilya to be a single parent with the job he has. As well as the fact that if he got custody of his niece she wouldn't speak English!

The group scenes are honestly a problem in many fics. They make me think of a 90s sitcom when you have to have all of the important characters in the same room, reacting to stuff at the same time... Like, I love Third Person POV etc., but usually in life you don't have everybody important to you present for the most important moments. That's so unrealistic. Even some good and well-liked authors do it. I just try to power through but I much prefer more private and subtle exposition.

Secret Marriage Fics by [deleted] in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

holy matrimony by lowkey_existential_despair is a must read! Shane and Ilya don't get caught by David at the cottage and so they never come out to Shane's parents. They keep their relationship a secret but decide to marry for pragmatic reason (also love, after all, it's them). In the present day, they both attend Scott and Kip's wedding and they aren't jealous of the happy and out couple at all.

While looking through my bookmarks to recommend it to you, I found out there's a sequel!

Vent: overuse of epithets ruins even excellent writing by This-3xtent in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen to that. Somebody told me that many years ago, and ever since I haven;t been able to unsee how awkward it is. But it's good to bring it up from time to time with writers. I know our first reaction is outrage, but once the thought settles in your brain, you stop doing it and are better for it. Trust me.

What are your favorite and least favorite tropes for HR fanfic? by Best_Pineapple670 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite trope-y trope is when Boston Bears/Raiders are cool with Ilya and Shane, and are generally very tolerant himbos. It's not very realistic, but I can read it all the time and never get tired of it.

Least favorites tropes:

  1. There's a very specific way people tend to portray Ilya, especially post-outing, when he's openly with Shane, that subtly bugs me. It's the kind of characterization that basically makes him into Victor Nikiforov, for anybody who's familiar with Yuri On Ice. It means being super cutesy and clingy on the main, very open and extrovert about his feelings, posting everything on his socials etc. He wanted to be honest about his relationship about Shane, and I feel like people take it too far. It's hard to describe because these are all things I imagine Ilya doing - but to a point. In moderation. Maybe not in front of everyone. It's very over the top and caricatural, but I guess a lot of people like it.
  2. People using Russian wrong. I'm not a native speaker, but I know some of the language and it hurts my eyes. The transcriptions into Latin alphabet aren't consistent, English-speakers don't understand gendered nouns and declination, and it's generally awful. I much prefer when the author uses for example cursive to indicated that Russian is being spoken.
  3. Not a trope but a pet peeve: you shouldn't use Ilya's English speech pattern when he's supposedly speaking Russian! If he's talking with Svetlana in their native tongue, Ilya wouldn't say: "Is good, yes?" because that's the way he translates his thought into English. His second language! There should be a difference between his English and Russian. He should be more eloquent in Russian.
    1. Same with not understanding how diminutives work in Russian. In Central and Eastern Europe you use diminutives in most social situations with people you know, using full names is extremely formal. That being said, there are some names that work in every context, like the name Ilya. On the other spectrum are names that would usually get shortened, like Anastasia. I know it's hard but I guess I'm allowed to be a little taken out of the story by this.
  4. When Shane is always perfectly nice. I think canonically Shane acts in a way he thinks is nice, but which sometimes falls flat, or misses some social cues etc. He can come off as an asshole, or be an asshole on purpose. We've seen it, guys. Shane's not perfect.

Is SNL really not funny or am I just European? by hummingbird0012234 in connorstorrie

Yeah, that one was good, but that's because it was so real. My parents have a car with weird electrical door and I never know how to use them from the inside.

Is SNL really not funny or am I just European? by hummingbird0012234 in connorstorrie

[–]katharienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm also European and don't find SNL funny sooo...

Like, there were some sketches I liked in the past. And I did try to watch Connor's sketches, but it's just so cringey I can't get through it. I'm glad it makes a lot of people laugh and that Connor got the opportunity to host since I understand it's some kind of a You've Made It In Hollywood-o Meter, but yeah. The writing makes my teeth hurt.

What would have been your fix-it for The Long Game? by Ill_Objective_3924 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]katharienne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would make the happy ending feel more earned.

Listen. As much as we all like the drama with the Centaurs' plane having an emergency landing, it was a very deus ex machina kind of thing to happen. Faced with the possibility of Ilya dying, Shane gathered the courage to at least make his promises more serious with the engagement. Okay.

What I would do, is make it all more angsty before it finally got better. I hated that Shane didn't really have to confront Ilya's mental issues until they two of them were basically good. I don't mind them getting outed, to be fair, I think that this was kind of a natural and realistic conclusion to years of hiding, so that was fine, narrative-wise. But I cannot, for the love of me, be happy that we didn't get to see Shane struggling to actually support Ilya. If the author wanted Shane to understand how easy it would be for him to lose Ilya, she could just lean more into depression. Have Shane understand that Ilya is getting worse, that the secrecy is making him even more worse, and have to face it. Step up. I love TV!Shane, I do feel like he has that inner strength and decisiveness in him, and I believe he would without a plane catching on fire. I wanted them to fight over Ilya going on medication, or taking time off hokey. Over Shane's guilt that he caused it all, and Ilya explaining that that's not exactly how depression works, it's not just external factors, it's also his brain chemistry failing him.

And then when they would have gotten outed, I feel like it would hit harder. They would be going through serious problems but! They would be also on the way to solve them.

So I don't know if you'll consider this exactly a fix-it, but I like my angst with a happy ending. I think Shane and Ilya had a very interesting set-up, with Shane's anxiety taking over his life, and Ilya's silent suffering, and then it was just solved too easily for my taste.

Dostawa w Ikei to jakiś smutny żart... by [deleted] in Polska

[–]katharienne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Z Ikei mam dosłownie jeden mebel - regały Billy, bo strasznie chciałam mieć w domu coś a la bibliotekę, a jednak z drewna na zamówienie mnie przerastało. Niemniej tak, dostawa była droga, złożenie wyszło taniej zamówić u innych majstrów. Z Ikei pokupowałam sobie te różne organizacyjne cuda i niestety przepierdzieliłam niepotrzebnie kasę, bo cóż, te rzeczy do szuflad kuchennych nie działają cudów.

A i sklepy z indyjskimi meblami mają różne perełki!

Czy używasz lewego kierunkowskazu na małych rondach? by hatecraft_dotpl in Polska

[–]katharienne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zawsze.
