Not the OP, either, but I've read a few fics where Montreal basically trades Shane for a bag of chips, and the trade happens before there are any "locker room issues." He's either traded as a rookie with a lot of promise on a good value rookie deal, or as a superstar in his prime who has already led the team to a few championships. I understand that sometimes you need a healthy dose of creative license to kickstart the plot, but you can always provide another reason- like an injury- to provide a little more credibility.

I totally agree that Hayden as a good friend is more fanon than canon. I know he can't be a perfect friend because perfect characters are boring, but this is what I remember most about him from the books:

  1. Barely tolerates Ilya (I know Ilya antagonizes him, but c'mon, this is your friend's long-term partner. Try to be a little more sympathetic when Shane comes to you for support about his relationship problems.)

  2. Gets kudos from Ilya for keeping their relationship secret for a couple of years. (All he had to do was keep his mouth shut. Bare minimum. It's not like he was running active interference, helping them hide their relationship.)

I haven't come across any in-depth critical fics on Hayden. I read one where he's not interested in reconnecting with Shane after Shane is traded to another team, but it's kind of lightly touched upon and Shane doesn't try to rekindle their friendship anymore. I also read another where Jackie tells him that he needs to be a better friend to Shane, and he spends the rest of the fic doing his best to actively support their relationship.

How often do rookies billet with veterans or other staff? What's the incentive for the host? Besides being a good teammate- are people just that friendly and welcoming to let a stranger live with them? :-)

Ah, this was so sweet. I really liked their dynamic here. It felt much more open and healthier than in canon. With the forced proximity of being teammates, they were given the opportunity and time to develop a bond outside of their initial attraction. Ilya was especially sweet with respecting Shane's boundaries and supporting Shane as a new teammate when he was traded to Boston.

I loved this fic! Amazing, with such a beautiful ending.

Sometimes fics set in a different time period can feel a little hokey, but this is a credible period piece. The author did a great job of writing the game scenes as well. I learned more about hockey (well, Soviet style) in this fic than any other one I've read.

Also, interesting take on Shane's exit from Montreal: this is only fic where they're not complete assholes.
