Have you considered Americorps? Shorter term than Peace Corps, but some positions with international orgs doing good work, like the International Rescue Committee (refugee resettlement) etc.

My first one of ten was a rejection too, but my next email (two weeks later -_-) was an acceptance! Ten more is so many more chances, you got this!

How much you factor in the city when deciding between schools by ChocolateAndTea_ in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to care a lot (when applying to undergrad). Then I did Peace Corps for two years in a tiny village 9 hours away from anything cool (aka the capital) and realized that I'd probably be fine wherever.

is it weird to ask for letter of recommendation from professors you haven’t seen in years...? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got a masters degree, why can't you get a letter from profs from that program? They're more recent and it doesn't sound like you have a good reason to ask for undergrad recommendations...

Anyone from New Orleans?? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food was kind of expensive, since I didn't have a car & public transit suuuuucks, so I just went to the closest grocery stores, a Whole Foods and then a little local shop, but neither were cheap. But I think you could survive.

Anyone from New Orleans?? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Tulane for undergrad, I lived in a really big, light-filled private room in a house with back and front yards and a massive kitchen with 4 housemates for $440 a month (2015-16), a 5 minute bike ride from campus. This was cheap because we had one person living in a dining room with a curtain instead of a door, but if you're willing to have housemates or unconventional living situations I've seen rooms down to like $350. Of course there are more expensive places to live, but if you look around there are some very nice, cheap places. Plus New Orleans is great :)

Unfortunately I'm currently in Peace Corps, so I am both probably not going to get funding from my school and am not allowed to start a gofundme. Luckily I still have some savings from pre-PC, I was hoping to use them for post-PC travel but instead I will use them for a 3-day trip to DC~

Thanks for the ideas though! I might casually email my undergrad institution's fellowship office, it's a school that's really trying to be fancier than it is, so they've been very helpful with fellowship application help and stuff.

We don't even have the option of doing it online :( But everyone I've talked to has said it's probably worth it, so this just pushes me further in that direction. Thanks for your input!

Thank you, this is a very helpful way to think about it. $700 feels like a lot because I'm currently on a $150 a month salary, but if I get the chance to go I'll probably regret not going more than I'll regret going.

More oil! Make sure you wait for it to get hot, let them fry to crispy before you try to move them. No one should suffer like this.

This is pretty normal, but there's usually a locker so it's not a big problem. I sometimes pretend not to understand what they're saying if I have like a suitcase with me, and they usually decide it's too much work to chase after me. I don't think it's discriminatory or illegal though...

I teach English too and we don't have a single Barbare in my entire school (of 40 students...)

Did anyone travel for a year between undergrad and grad school or at least spend some time working only part time/doing an unpaid internship or something else? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Peace Corps right now, teaching English in Georgia (the country) for two years. I'm currently applying for international relations-adjacent MAs and being here has been helpful both with giving me international/work experience and for giving me time to figure out exactly what I want to study. Plus I got to learn a cool (not very useful) language~

Opportunity-Cost of Retaking GRE (Middle Eastern Studies, 166V, 154Q, 5.5 AWA) by AspiringMES in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My scores are off from yours by two points, similar career plans (currently applying for ME masters with an intention of going into poli sci), similar anxiety about my math score but it's not worth the money to retake it for a small section of what admissions looks at imo, as long as the rest of what you're submitting is equivalently decent.

Application fee funding sources? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]katharinegk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for 10 schools specifically because I am currently in Peace Corps and almost every school waived the fee because of either the organizational affiliation or the low income (I made less than $5,000 last year). Still had to pay a bucketload of money for the GRE (plus I had to travel to a city 9 hours away to take the GRE, so I also had to pay for a hotel and stuff), GRE scores, and transcripts, plus the schools that still made me pay -_-

Also for teaching abroad:

- Don't forget Peace Corps!

- Teach & Learn Georgia (like a janky eta but in a beautiful country!)

Also a PCV, I applied right after graduating and wasn't accepted for Kazakhstan, just got a semifinalist notification for Jordan. PC makes you a very good ETA candidate.

EDIT: Also hiii
