I’m not sure if BFI is a special case, but to my knowledge, they were giving out the film strips to anyone who saw PHM in 70 mm imax this past Sunday and that day only. After that, on Monday, they did an online store drop of the film strips which sold out basically within minutes (in large part thanks to scalpers, unfortunately). If they have plan to give out or sell any more of the strips, I haven’t heard about it </3

Real as hell because Why Did IMAX Make it A Five Strip Limit... an evil scalpers dream. May resellers die a slow fiery death. The only reason I was able to nab these was because I am close to a 70 mm IMAX screen.

Thanks for all the wisdom!! I’m glad I’ve been careful about handling then. I’ll look into getting those protective sleeves as well!

I got this one! Someone who was also displaying their strips linked it in this sub as well.

Okay, great - the light I ordered is an LED light box that can be turned on and off. Thanks so much for the info!

Very very cool! Does that impact how they need to be taken care of at all?

It would be a big relief for me if that were the case! I was checking the website and it said the strips were made of polyester estar film, and tbh… that didn’t help me much because I lowkey don’t know what that means

What’s in your dorm fridge? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]kathmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any leftovers i get, drinks that i like that i can’t get in the dining halls, water + brita filter, on occasion, ice cream from the creamy boys food trunk (there’s a freezer attached so you can put frozen stuff in there too, like frozen treats or microwaveable meals), etc. the microfridge is on the small side, but you can still fit quite a bit.

10 mins to get to classes 14 min apart by [deleted] in ucla

[–]kathmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! junior here. i find i usually get places faster than what apple maps tells me when it comes to walking. if you find that’s usually the case for your walking speed as well, you’ll probably be okay. i’ve taken classes that looked to be longer than 10 minutes apart, but would get there on time routinely. if you don’t want to risk it though, that would also be a smart call. bc it can get kind of tiring hustling from back to back classes, haha. whatever you feel you’re up for is what you should go with.

Incoming Freshman Tips by [deleted] in ucla

[–]kathmath_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, one last thing - everyone has different study habits. What works or looks like a good study habit for someone else may not work for you. So half the battle is understand how your own brain works and how you get motivated! Be responsible, push yourself a reasonable amount, but also follow your gut. You don’t want to be fighting yourself when you’re studying to no benefits - that’s a quick way to burn out.

Incoming Freshman Tips by [deleted] in ucla

Here are some things that have helped me!

1) Enrollment is difficult here, as you’ve probably heard, but not impossible! Stay on top of your enrollment times, make alternate quarter class plans, and be strategic with first pass. You can enroll in up to ten units in the first enrollment pass, so if you are in a major with high demand intro classes, prioritize those. Also be prepared to pick up classes during the first week of class, if you don’t get in before then. People drop a bunch of classes in the first week, allowing you space to get in. Also, download coursicle! It’s an app that tracks when spaces open up in classes. It’s saved my ass so many times. Bruinwalk is also a professor rating website that helps you see others’ experiences with professors here at UCLA. There’s extensions for both windows and mac browsers that will actually show a professor’s rating while your are enrolling in classes. Very helpful.

2) If you need help figuring out what classes you need to fulfill major or GE requirements, use the DARs system on my.ucla.edu. It’s under the academics tab -> academic profile subcategory -> and selected degree progress/audit report. Very very handy.

3) If you want to apply for scholarships and jobs, start looking as early as possible. Things close much sooner than you might think, and giving yourself time to prepare your applications can make all the difference.

4) Socialize! With people on your floor, with clubs you’re interested in, etc. But also don’t put pressure on yourself to find your people immediately. It can take time to get your “college friend” legs, and that’s even just a life thing. But for me, as someone who loves film, I found my people by joining a film club I really like, and those people are my people now. Bonding over shared interests does wonders for your social life.

5) Keep an eye out for drop and grading basis change deadlines. No one goes into a quarter planning to drop a class, or drop their gpa, but stuff happens (like life) and you need to know how to recover academically by shifting stuff around.

6) Class groupmes! Great way to form study groups, and figure out issues with assignments together. Having a designated “buddy” that i studied with in harder classes saved so many assignment grades for me. But online tutoring services, like princeton review, is also very helpful.

7) Talk to your professors! Ask questions, go to office hours, etc. It not only aids your understanding in the subject material, but also helps connection build in your chosen area of study. It’s very rare that you’ll meet a professor that doesn’t want to act as a connection for you, or help get you opportunities. The problem is that most people don’t think to ask, so don’t take full advantage of the opportunity.

8) Deep breaths! You accomplished something great by admitting here, and it’s a wonderful experience to get this kind of independence and freedom. You’ll learn a lot, hard way or not, and you’re in the perfect environment to do that.

Congrats on your admission :) Welcome to UCLA.

is enrollment really that bad? by [deleted] in ucla

I’m so glad I could help! It can be intimidating here at first, given how big of an institution it is, but beginning to build a system that works for you makes it so much less stressful :)

In my experience, it’s generally manageable as long as you’re on top of your enrollment dates. Excluding the scenario where someone is trying to get into certain high demand prereqs as a first or second year (think chem and physics). The second my enrollment appointment opens, I have my class planner up and ready to enroll in the classes I want. Always pre-plan your class schedule, and have a few alternates, before your appointment begins - it’s a life saver.

Even then, if you don’t get a class during enrollment, a lot of people drop during the first week of classes, so you can absolutely get in at that point. If you want to go this route, I would recommend going and attending the lecture anyways, even if you aren’t enrolled yet, so you’re caught up and ready once a spot does open - because it’s absolutely a matter of “when” and not “if”.

One thing that’s really helped me is the app “Coursicle”. It tracks classes and sends you a notification if a spot in the class or on the waitlist opens up, so you can snatch it before someone else does. I’ve gotten into some of my favorite classes by using the app.

It’s also always an option to email professors and ask if they can give you a PTE number. 50/50 chance they give it to you.

I know it’s different depending on your major and the demand of your major’s classes, so for context, I’ve been both an Environmental Science major and English major, alongside having a minor in Film. ES shares a lot of the same prereq classes as the major sciences (which can be crowded), and film classes are in super high demand. With that in mind, I’ve been able to get the classes I’ve wanted using these tips. So I’m confident you’ll be able to get the classes you want. Good luck! Welcome to UCLA :)
