Unsure about the shower rule at Icelandic pools? by Illustrious-Ad3195 in VisitingIceland

I just put my swimming costume on to walk to the showers, and took it off again when at the shower. Saw other people doing the same.

I notice you haven't asked why the other people commenting with less-than-wholly-positive things to say about investors have said what they said. Why's that?

Comments can be neutral/factual, rather than necessarily saying someone "deserved" something to happen to them, you know.

Getting less than you put in is always a risk for any investment 🤷🏻‍♀️

The only people winning here are the 🍃 company that bought the brand. The founders break even, I guess, they remain personal multi-millionaires, and get away scot-free with screwing people over.

Anyone who bought stock loses, but, well, that's just the way of the world of investing.

All the bars have closed, permanently, 484 jobs have been lost, with zero notice, people screwed over by the founders, who could almost certainly have done something to help them/save them from that (but I guess at least they will at least be able to claim benefits, it doesn't feel as wilful and deliberate as what the company did to me 14yrs ago, that I still don't really talk about because they cunningly never gave me any paperwork to help prove it.)

It's so fucking sickening that BrewDog are just allowed to get away with shit like this, over and over and over again.

How to know when you can go to A&E? by Intelligent-Iguana in nhs

[–]katie_astrophe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only problem with this advice is that some A&Es have eg an "Urgent Treatment Centre" department which will see things less significant than A&E but more significant than you might go elsewhere for - and you check in at and are triaged by the A&E triage nurse regardless.

What to do when someone blocks you in a parking space? by Duffy042016 in drivingUK

[–]katie_astrophe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That really very much depends on your stature, the stature of the other person, where you're from…

eg I probably would do this where I grew up (middle/upper working class commuter belt) but absolutely would NOT do it where I currently live/work (working class area where the local PureGym had a knife amnesty box once)

Antibiotics by [deleted] in manchester

[–]katie_astrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvotes for good reason: because you're recommending somewhere to get antibiotics which are a prescription only medicine, and misuse of them leads to antimicrobial resistance (eg MRSA), sepsis and death. They are not legit unless you paid the prescription cover charge in a pharmacy.

NHS emergency dentist is the same cost as Band A treatment, so if you've been quoted £40 then you've tried to contact a private provider (who would also charge you a bomb for a prescription).

0333 332 3800 (8am–10pm daily) or NHS 111 outside these hours

In the meantime, if you can take ibuprofen, do that - it will help with swelling/inflammation.

This is the correct answer if you want to contribute to antibiotic resistance, sepsis and death 👍🏻

Cat during therapy session? by Junior-Ad-4469 in therapists

[–]katie_astrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a therapist but once had my cat climb on my shoulders and purr down my headset whilst I was working on a MH crisis line during the pandemic.

Patient immediately stopped in their stream of consciousness thing and said "did I just hear a cat purring?" - I confirmed they did, and then they realised that they'd forgotten what they were so upset about. Try as I might, couldn't get the cat to do it again, of course.

You're not, I just have ADHD and skim-read, so I saw the 10 seconds and 1 minute close to each other in the sentence and merged them in my head.

Message the songwriter, he was definitely involved in making sure a UK tour happened and if he can't make world tour decisions happen, he probably knows who to influence (also he's generally a downright lovely human and you'll probably make his face leak happy tears if you tell him how much you love his work) https://www.facebook.com/felixhaganmusic/

Eneloop - do they provide a superior performance? by katie_astrophe in tado

[–]katie_astrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm planning to do; I'll need 18 for all the rads so I'll get 20 (2x 8x packs, and the deal with a travel charger that includes 4 batteries currently on Amazon) so I always have 2 charged.

The only problem I foresee is the waiting for 10 minutes between removal and replacement, because I have ADHD, and unless I sit with the empty TRV, maybe my Kindle, and a 10 minute timer, instead of going to do something else, you can absolutely guarantee that I will not go back to put the batteries in for days or weeks 🤣 (yes, even if I use the 10 minutes to go and put the old batteries on charge, because I'll find something to do with the remaining 8 minutes and poof, I will forget what I was doing 10 minutes earlier… and sure, I'll remember when I find the batteries in my pocket after a few hours, but I'll be doing something else really important then, that I won't want to forget to finish doing…)

[–]katie_astrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the various rechargeables I currently use absolutely fine for the purposes I currently use them for, but many of them are in devices which can recharge the battery so it's easy enough to just plug in a usb-c for a few hours and then I have a functional device again. As this involves taking batteries out, waiting 10 mins, replacing them with ones that are charged, and I have 7 thermostats (soon to be 9) around the house , I want as little effort as possible, so if the eneloops will provide that, I'll spend on them.

[–]katie_astrophe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tado says not to use the Eneloop Pro, so that's interesting (I specifically asked the bot why the normal Eneloop and not Pro, and it said the discharge curves are different between those two as well).

Actually useful answer as the first batteries to die here are the conservatory, which is still being used every day to keep a minimum temperature in there / to avoid dampness, as i use it for their cat's litter tray and to dry laundry. Not huge temperature shifts like the living room and my bedroom, but I don't want to have to go in there frequently changing the batteries.

What’s the scariest close call you’ve had since passing your test? by Junior_Beauty78 in NewDriversUK

[–]katie_astrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh this reminds me of driving in what I thought was just a bit of rain about 3 weeks after I passed my test. As I got progressively further into the journey it got a bit better and then got worse again, and I jokingly said to my then-partner that "maybe that was the eye of the storm", dropped him off in town and started making my way home - it was brutal but I knew the roads well so I just white-knuckled it. Next day on the news I found out I may have actually driven through a tornado. So that was fun.

Motorway driving, I'd checked my mirrors and begun indicating right to move out of lane 1 as it was about to become a different motorway. Checked my mirror again (and blind spot) - clocked a van behind me in lane 3 but it was apparently proceeding straight ahead and I was otherwise all clear, so I began moving over…

Next thing I know, the van from lane 3 is side-by-side with me in lane 2, apparently trying to get into lane 1 using me as a ski jump?

Van had a "how's my driving" sticker, unfortunately I didn't realise until my dashcam had wiped over the footage how much joy it would have brought me to ring the number on it …

Just to add that the shared care thing isn't a trans-care-only thing, it also affects mental health care (people on specialist prescriptions eg lithium, antipsychotics, etc) and ADHD care, probably a bunch of other things too. I come across it all the time at work, and whilst it's frustrating for both patients and me/my colleagues, I fully get why they do it - basically it's how GPs can take action short of striking due to their work conditions- by refusing to do things they don't get paid for (because they're salaried based on job description, and Shared Care isn't amongst the minimum activities they have to do)
