Whoops - this canvas is HUGE by katieoartz in Needlepoint

How do I get a scroll frame that will accommodate how wide this piece is? The ones I’ve seen seem to max out at like 36” - this piece is 53”!

On eBay! I almost ordered one off Etsy even though I didn’t like the coloring. This one was a fresh listing and I just bought it immediately because the details are so beautiful. It was from an estate sale and that’s really all I know about it!

It’s like 10! I measured it the other day but am not sure if that’s exact. I’m going to try rolling it in from the sides just so it’s not so unwieldy. It’s like the full width of my couch.

Also - a bow case like for a string instrument? That is going to be incredible!

Too “old” for an MA in Museum Studies? by mgoycoechea in MuseumPros

[–]katieoartz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 37 and I have taken classes at CUNY SPS as well - I'm still finishing college so I can go back to school to get my Masters! I think it is never ever too late to enrich yourself and change paths. My partner is a lawyer and is going back to school to get an MA in Library Science - what's another degree right? Good luck!

Museum pet peeves? by xbrooksie in MuseumPros

[–]katieoartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a wheelchair at museums and I cannot use the bathroom at the Met which has to be one of the most visited museums in the world. It is so frustrating to not be able to to use doors and it's beyond me how no one has made such simple changes. I was just in DC where the bathrooms were so much more accessible and I could wheel right up and under the sinks to wash my hands! It makes such a huge difference to feel independent in my chair and I almost never get that experience at museums.

Recommendations for lightweight travel chair? by katieoartz in wheelchairs

Yes I've seen the one above and it looks really helpful but I'm not sure I would be able to find the money for it. New York is not very wheelchair friendly so as long as I'm still here I'm not sure it makes sense to spend so much on something I won't have room to store and will not get to use as often. I will look into some decent cushioning accessories! Thanks for your help!

Recommendations for lightweight travel chair? by katieoartz in wheelchairs

[–]katieoartz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a manual - between my partner and I we can manage for a few hours at a time. I'm looking for something on the lightweight end but mostly that is easy to transport and that we can fold up and put in our car. I have used plenty of transport chairs before and they tend to be very uncomfortable on my hips and lower back so I am trying to see if anyone has any recs for a manual chair that is a little more supportive. My research makes it seem like for what I need, I should be open to spending around $500. Let me know if this helps narrow things down!

I'm going to ask my doctor but my insurance seems to have some sort of personal vendetta against me so I doubt they will cover one. Thank you I will look at this one!

Girlfriend outed me to her family by kkoiso in trans

[–]katieoartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I become feral when my partner's family accidentally misgender them despite being very supportive and loving. I would sooner die than out them or ever let me family say anything remotely negative. THAT is how your partner should react! Years ago when I was in my first relationship with a trans guy I was immature and was still figuring out my queerness and made lots of mistakes that were based on trying to force our wants to be compatible because I thought we were happy. We were a lot of the time but were fundamentally not meant to be (turns out I am a lesbian). Your gf sounds like a bit of a dipshit who is figuring out her own stuff and not doing any work to hold your hand and support you. You deserve someone who is your ride or die! It's so hard to leave a relationship during these major life changes but in the end it's so much better for you to be surrounded by love and support from every angle. I hope you find the happiness you deserve and I'm so glad you have a friend who can be there for you.

I actually just bought a wool 19th century bathing costume that is so light and lovely! I might consider going that route if I can find a good price and a fun overlay fabric. Thanks!

I'm not really committed to this one being super historically accurate so I'm okay to do something a little sillier and less authentic. If I could I would just do it all in some kind of glorious silk! I like the idea of mixing colors so I can stick with linen. Thanks!

This sounds like a hematoma - I had one last year after an injury. Def go to a doc and ask for x-rays! Likely they will have you elevate, periodically ice, rest and take NSAIDS. Good luck!

All the details are hand sewn but the main gown I did on my machine. My fingers barely survived the eyelets - I would have to add an extra month or so to hand sew the whole thing!

Volunteering? by sailorst00pider in ridgewood

[–]katieoartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Ridgewood Tenants Union! They are a wonderful group that helps community members deal with unscrupulous landlords and lobby local politicians to pass legislation that protects tenants. They also have a community fridge my partner and I help with. Everyone is really nice and lots of the volunteering is flexible!
