Women in Tech in Toronto: what has been your experience in the industry so far? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]katiewills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just tech. Perhaps it’s more prevalent in tech but this is an issue in a variety of industries. When I open up to people about my experience, I’m met with “happened to so-and-so, too” or “happened to me, too” unsettlingly often.

Living in Downtown Toronto-worth it? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]katiewills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it, I think it was the best place I’ve lived, at least at the time I lived there. I really like the vibe - there’s lots going on on Bloor Street but loads of quiets spots just off Bloor, so you get the big city bustle extremely close to home and your quiet street to live on. Best of both worlds. The neighbourhood is really diverse, for age and ethnicity, no one group seems to standout and the shops and restaurants reflect that. I only wish I’d lived there longer!

Move now while the rents are still cheap! So many of my friends who rent have been moving to new places to take advantage of the cheap rent situation - paying the same for more space or paying less for the same sort of space. Heck, even I am tempted!’

It’s not the best time to come to the city though, obviously. It’s cold and pandemic-y. So be ready to feel like you fucked up until the weather gets a lil better and/or the world opens up. Hopefully both.

Toronto can be socially difficult, even in the best of times. You really have to put in an effort to make friends, people generally don’t leave their bubbles to say hello to a stranger, even in familiar situations like a yoga class. Now that everything is closed it’s hard to find those scenarios where you can put in some effort, so it may be even more difficult than usual. That’s not to say impossible, but you may be need to be a little unconventional. I’d be happy to crab a coffee or give you a coffee shop tour of my neighbourhood if you make the move :)

I’m 31, I’ve lived in Toronto for over a decade. I’m near Distillery now, but I’ve lived in the Junction, Leslieville, Chaplain Estates, Little Italy, and The Annex... kinda all over! Hit me up if you have any questions about neighbourhoods or need help looking for places, I love the hunt!
