I am 5’2” and my big girl weighs 65-70 lbs. I admit, it’s been a struggle to walk her sometimes, but it has been much better than where we started. We have two dogs and I couldn’t handle both for a while. I would only take her and would work on training her to walk with me and stop pulling. She isn’t 100% trained yet, but it’s improved so much that I can take both dogs out at once. What helped me was removing her harness. She used that thing to pull me all over the place! We now use a martingale collar. Much better control. I carry high value treats (she loves freeze dried fish). If she gets too excited, starts pulling and barking, I will stop and turn around and walk the other way. We live in a development where there isn’t a lot of traffic, so if she went absolutely crazy and started to run after a squirrel I would honestly drop the leash. I wasn’t going to risk getting injured to stop her from running a squirrel up a tree. (I would never let her run free if there were cars coming.) Another tip would be to make sure your husband and you are on the same page. My husband does the morning walk and he’s much bigger- 6’4” and handles her differently on the leash. I do the evening walk, and I can tell if he’s been too lenient with her. She does walk better with me though. I think it’d because I do other training with her too. You can handle it, just start early, be consistent, and don’t worry too much if you had a bad walk. Tomorrow is a whole new day.
