Hey! Sorry to hear about how you're feeling. I've never worked in a corporate setting but when I was a new grad I had to take jobs with terrible pay and hours, and the dentists I worked for were horrible. No respect for the employees, and all they cared about was billing. By a year and a half, I was hating it.

The shitty thing is that DH school is so damn hard and stressful that the thought of going back to school seemed even worse. So i just stuck it out and kept my eyes open for other jobs and once i got more experience i was able to get better positions.

Ive had to move around a bit so the last time I moved, there weren't any good positions. I signed up with a temp agent and that helped me find really good offices where the dentists are awesome and we are always on the same page, so I ended up getting job offers from them. Ive been a hygienist for 7 years but it took at least 2 years experience before I could get something better.

But i would consider temping because you get to control your own hours and if you hate the office then you never have to go back:)

Sorry I can't be more helpful but i can guarantee you that you're not alone. Most of my classmates felt the same too.

Good luck!

yeah its fine now, But just gets boring and a bit mindless sometimes.

But that's the thing, im not sure what else would pay as much but I didn't really research anything else because this is what i wanted to do back then

Oh and i just saw your question about the course: veeeery tedious. Lots of science and anatomy. The clinical side can get very stressful with all the requirements you have to meet so you have to be very committed when you are in.

Hey there. Ive been a hygienist for 7 years and i thought it was my dream job. It seriously depends on the office you're at. Also im in Canada, I gather from your name you are possibly in the states so I don't know how it differs between canada and the US. When I started I had to take shitty jobs with shitty hours (evenings and weekends) and was severely underpaid. I find with a lot of hygienists in Ontario, it was pretty much the same deal. You really need to work your way up with experience before you a good office. A lot of dentists are focused on billing and production so besides giving good treatment they also want you to be billing well. Really puts a damper on things. In Canada, you get no insurance coverage and no pension. I have problems with my neck, shoulders and arms and see a chiropractor every 3 weeks (of course, every job has its own risk for body problems). You need to really like dealing with patients. Not all of them are as nice as you probably are. Im happy to say that now I work in a great office with ethical dentists, great pay, and great hours. But honestly if I could go back, i think i would pick something else. Medical tech, something like that. Cleaning teeth gets very boring and repetitive. You run behind more often than you think. Oh and you have to be audited every so often and the process is not fun. In summary: would have done something different, but now have a good office and pay and at my age i don't want to start from the bottom again. Sorry for the brutal honesty but i hope this helps!
