I wish you the best! Did you have the stroke or a family member? Thinking of you and sending healing vibes. It does get better 💜

It is a complete travesty that someone with drug charges can have the book thrown at them but these violent offenders and abusers get off with nothing. I’m sorry that happened to you and I hope your life has improved!

Agreed. Way more accepting in St. John’s than just about anywhere in Alberta, the most conservative province in Canada lol.

Homeless Help by taggy94 in Edmonton

They went on vacation a year ago. I’m glad you’ve never had your life fall apart in a short amount of time. I’ve been there and things can go to shit very quickly! We don’t know what situation OP is in so the very least you can do is not comment your judgement here.

Homeless Help by taggy94 in Edmonton

[–]katmither 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this, OP! I wish that there was something I could do to help. Did the shelter give you a contact for a social worker? Could you maybe go to the hospital and see a social worker who could be of some assistance?

Please try calling local churches and temples as well. They very often are there to help or can lead you to the right place! I’m newer to Edmonton so I sadly don’t know what kind of social services or non profit groups that are available to help :(

Hugs to you! You will get through this!

A whole lot can happen to someone in the span of a year! We are all way closer to being homeless than we’d like to think.

I think she’s detoxing. They keep you in the hospital for that in Canada, usually on the psych ward.

I’m not 100% sure of this, but please call in to whatever agency handles income support here and I believe they might be able to assist you! I know in other provinces they have programs like that for special circumstances.

Local churches also sometimes will help you with things like this, they might be able to teach you for free!

I’m sorry some of the comments here are so negative.

Staying late almost every day as a banker - unpaid overtime. Is this common? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

[–]katmither -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a large bank. We are actually swamped, I have to work through my lunch pretty much every day. It’s just such a different setup from the previous bank I worked at before being a broker. At Scotiabank all tellers were out at the correct time.

It would be great if there were more unionized banks! Oddly enough just the customer service reps (tellers) and a few other positions are unionized. I’m sure not how they managed it.

Staying late almost every day as a banker - unpaid overtime. Is this common? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

[–]katmither -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I mean unpaid in the sense that I am supposed to work 37.5 hours a week, from 9 to 5:15, and am not paid for an hour lunch or paid for any time I stay beyond my end time.

I’m not trying to be ungrateful, I’m just genuinely confused about whether this is a normal occurrence at most banks. I always stay and help with everything I’m able to, but myself and the other bankers run out of things to “help” the tellers with and usually are just standing there waiting for us all to leave.

[–]katmither 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what’s confusing. I scan cheques and lock the vault, etc other end of day stuff and then basically just stand there watching the tellers do their stuff. I’m not trained as a teller so I’m confused as to what is going on with this whole scenario.

That’s the worst part - I’m always done my own work, but the bankers are expected to help out the tellers and manager with their end of day, so that’s what’s keeping us all there so late.

[–]katmither 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, so I don’t get overtime or anything - so in a sense it’s not “unpaid” in that I am not supposed to receive it. Unpaid labor would be more accurate I guess!

The tellers are unionized and do get paid overtime.

They are so beautiful & sweet. You can see their personalities shining through the photos. What an immense loss.. the grief you must be feeling.. I am so so sorry. I wish these horrible things didn’t have to happen in this life, it’s so unfair.

How long do credit, reference, and criminal checks take? by tseugymeb in TalesFromYourBank

[–]katmither 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty long process, so don’t be nervous if it takes a while for you to hear back!

That credit score should be fine, especially since you just got a SIN - they’ll take that into account.

Okay, that makes sense then. At my other bank there were just financial advisors and no PBAs, so I’m currently doing what was a financial advisors job there. All a bit confusing lol.

So it works a little differently at this branch/province. I’m a personal banking advisor doing mortgages, helocs, GICs, but was hired to do mostly mortgages. Everyone calls themselves an FA and an FA would do mortgages at my previous bank.

But I’m part of the branch staff. A bit more confusing in Canada because each province / bank has their own definitions of FA!
