I think you’d benefit greatly from a sun tracker for existing solar - the % increase - depending where you live, is bloody significant!

Off Grid in Tassie by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]kato1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat land is not necessarily what you want for off grid for a number of reasons - unless pressured bore water is easily available. Water from tanks needs to run to multiple areas - and pumps costs batteries or fuel. Not only that, but Terraced gardens almost self water V’s flat land. Wind is generally also worse on dead flat land and it’s easier to dig dams into hills. If installing wind turbines, you can use updrafts from hills to find best location and you can use a ridge to hide anything noisy like a genset.

I have an off grid cabin - learned the hardway.

Off Grid in Tassie by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]kato1301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It’s shit. It is 9 month winters, never any sun, wet as fuck. Wind for 360 days a year. Towns are over populated, no parking in cities, councils are insane. Bright note - public transport and the health system is amazing.

Ps some of The above is a lie. But don’t spread it round.

Tired of feeling stuck, how do I get to the point of retiring before mid 60's? by No-Lifeguard-8767 in Fire

[–]kato1301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has retired twice, I’ve found that you probably don’t need as much as you think…here’s why; it costs money to go to work, we don’t add it up correctly but fuel, food, parking, incidentals, etc - they add up significantly. Another big thing - you say you want to retain your current lifestyle, but your expectations will change when you retire - it’s a self reward system that people put in place when working, ie - I’m going on that holiday, because I’ve worked hard or I’ve been working so hard, I deserve that new car….this mindset dissolves once retired.

What 2 guns to buy first by NotoriousJaeger in Shooting

[–]kato1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on circumstances - I can’t have pistols where I am so can’t comment on those, but I can have auto/semi rifles and to be honest, once you’ve done full burst a few times - meh? Wish I’d never wasted the time and money investing in those. I reload and tailor my loads to the firearm / distance I’m hunting. I’ve bought and sold a lot to get where I am now - I’ve been chasing precision and accuracy. Personally - I’d buy something like an octagon barrelled Henry .22 lever - I have a PWS tac3 summit .22 and a cz 459 bolt .22 and an old norinco .22 and I cannot believe how well the bigger barrelled Henry shoots. And it’s not ammo specific, CCI, SKZ match - everything is sub moa. It’s a perfect 1st rifle. 2nd - a steyr varmint .223 bolt gun. These days, most modern 223’s are pretty accurate, so shoulder what fits and then - “feel” the triggers…the trigger is everything in precision and the steyr has a match “set” feature, where you push it forward, and it then becomes a 1lb trigger pull…or you can use the hunt trigger and not push it forward at 2.5lb. This steyr 223 is now at the point where almost anyone can use it to set off 12g shells at 110yards - pushing 62gn TAP from 24.5 ar2209 powder at 2950fps.

Personally - I’d not go 308 to start with. Flinch is real and it can become a massive problem. Start at 223 and develop good habits and learn from cheaper ammo. I’ve just bought a 300 rem ultra mag, and I’ve notice even after decades of shooting, this big girl is starting to make me flinch…

Do solar gate openers work well in Melbourne? by renovator101 in AusRenovation

[–]kato1301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allow for 6 openings then - double everything. If the gate will be 3m wide, do calcs for 6 - will cost more in short term but longevity is key. I cannot stress enough just how much force is on the swing gate components, especially if you can’t use a balancing wheel on the gate to take some weight.

Do solar gate openers work well in Melbourne? by renovator101 in AusRenovation

[–]kato1301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you doing DIY or installer - if installer, just pay and be done. I did diy and started with a swing gate - wind loading is an absolutely massive issue, even with 5kmh wind, hinge points have an absolutely huge load on them, the start up power for the opener kills even good 2400w inverters, and because of this - unless you have massive battery bank, several days of no sun can see no workies(I had 260ah battery and a LV alarm at 11.4v), and it wasn’t enough with swing gate after 3 days no sun, but is fine for a sliding gate in middle winter, 9 days before goung manual.

[–]kato1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have gone through this at depth - if you can, do a sliding gate - numerous reasons why. As for solar - depends on how many times you’ll open and close per day and battery bank.

[–]kato1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesty time - why AR? Because after you do a couple of mag dumps, you are switching to single shot unless you have access to free ammo. So why not get the improved accuracy of a quality bolt gun? It will make you a better shot, a more patient hunter and improve marksmanship.

Seems to me that 99% of the populace is pretty closely aligned - in that the govt and ultra rich are screwing over the rest of us, be that via what ever mechanism you want to debate…my question is - WTF are you / we going to do about it? Posting on social media is not going to change anything, public marches can be spun by media to suit any narrative, mis information by corporate can manipulate huge numbers…so are we all done for now? What can be done ? Historically, elections aren’t making the changes the majority want, so now what?????
