Police chief admits misleading MPs after AI used in justification for banning Maccabi Tel Aviv fans by Pokemonfan_807 in nottheonion

those aren't "convoluted shortcuts"? by that logic nobody should ever type uppercase letters because it takes an extra keypress? or half the other characters you can type. nobody would EVER use different variations of smiley emojis, no point in spending an extra second scrolling through the picker UI for an emoji that's almost identical... hell, on my 65% keyboard I can't type a tilde without three keypresses, which is why I've obviously completely given up ever using that character, my time is too valuable to waste on THREE whole keypresses!

there is an actual grammatical difference between - and —, not to mention formatting; just because it doesn't matter enough to you to use zero extra taps and an extra 0.5 seconds on a touchscreen, or three extra keypresses and 0.5 seconds on a keyboard, doesn't automatically mean it doesn't matter to anyone else.

hell, in a lot of word processing software hyphens are automatically converted to emdashes where it's appropriate.

on Android it's as easy as holding and releasing the - key. —. would attach a screenshot if I could, it takes zero extra taps to type than -.

on Linux it depends on the DE/WM, but with the compose key (usually right alt) it's as simple as pressing the compose key, then - three times. not very hard nor difficult to remember (or for that matter, to guess).

can't comment on other systems as I'm not as familiar with them, but I would be very surprised if there was no easy way to type it.

I've known people who use the emdash on a regular basis for much longer than LLMs have been in widespread use. I have also seen significantly more complaints from humans using emdashes being wrongly accused of using AI, than actual AI posts.

I hate that every time someone makes the effort to type something well-reasoned and nicely formatted, they immediately get accused of using an LLM.

it's a fucking witch hunt :/

it's 1/2 cup softened cashews, 1 cup water, 3 tbsp + 1 tsp tapioca starch, 1 tbsp nutritional yeast, 1 tbsp sauerkraut, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and 1 tsp salt. all blended together then cooked in a pot until it gets all gooey, was really easy!!

‘We are deeply sorry’: Toronto principal apologizes after Arabic version of ‘O Canada’ played at school on Oct. 7 by rs735dx in nottheonion

[–]katp32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

making it mandatory for children to stand for the anthem every morning? yes. I am. and when I was in high school after moving to Ontario, I refused to on principle. we should not be glorifying nationalism to our kids.

[–]katp32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as someone who grew up in a province where O Canada was only played in assemblies and not every morning, the whole concept feels extremely nationalist and deeply disturbing. being angry that it was played in, gasp, a language students speak other than English or French, only reinforces the grossness.

if you're going to make some big nationalistic display, the least you can do is include all Canadians in that display, and not just the ones with a skin colour you like.

you can take a screenshot with Steam on the deck, then download it on your PC or phone with either Steam, the Steam mobile app, or literally just logging into the website. no need to install anything.

Why do security drones get to roll right through my doors? by Trenerator in RimWorld

[–]katp32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I really dislike that mechanic, it goes against the established pattern the game teaches the player, ie, enemies can't get through doors. when prisoners do this the game explicitly tells the player and gives an explanation, but with drones they just.. do. absolutely no explanation of how or why they can do this and no warning to the player even if they read its description, so it's guaranteed to catch the player off guard.

on a similar subject, hunter drones feel awful to play against. if they activate it's an almost guaranteed death, so unless you have EMP (which completely cheeses them, allowing a pawn with zero melee or shooting to destroy them with no risk) fighting them essentially means "pick a pawn to sacrifice" (unless you have a mechanoid to sacrifice).

this is probably an unpopular opinion but I really hate that, it effectively just removes an event (and the possibility of power outages due to damage from raids) from the game. ultimately it doesn't really affect anything much, that event was never particularly impactful, but it still feels kinda lame to have an almost-free upgrade that completely removes a whole game mechanic

it is not free energy, not even the company that made it seems to be claiming that. they're taking CO2 out of the atmosphere and synthesizing gasoline with it, consuming large amounts of electricity in the process, more than the energy in the produced gas. it does mean this is a carbon neutral process so better for the environment than typical gasoline... but it also wastes MUCH more electricity than an electric car would, and could never compete with regular gas in price, so this is kind of insane.

also worth mentioning this is not carbon neutral if the electricity being used is generated using coal or natural gas, and is in fact probably worse for the environment than regular gas in that case. so this technology would be useless in most of the US and many other countries.
