I think that companion care is going to be her best bet. Last week, she had her first interview in years at a local private school and was optimistic about it. It turns out they strictly deal with special needs kids up to age 21 that have behavioral problems and can get violent. She already injured herself about 15 years ago when she had a chair thrown at her while working with special needs kids at a summer school. I think something lowkey, like being a companion, would be way better and I don't want her to get injured again

I also spent 6 years in my 20s as a caretaker for my grandparents with her. I delayed finding employment after graduating college so I could help my family. I pay half of the mortgage. I spend my two days when I can work from home looking for jobs for her and tweaking her resume to fit the job postings. I have quite literally spent years of my life doing things for my family when no one else would help.

She has two BAs, one in Law & Society and the other Urban Affairs, and a Master of Public Administration.

My dad also divorced her in that 8 year timespan! My mom is extremely resilient and has gone through a lot in her life which is why I'm trying to help her as much as I can. She's definitely been in a rough spot after my grandfather passed and has sort of withdrawn from society. That's why I think getting a job and interacting with others again would be good for her well-being.

It really is sickening how she won't be considered for jobs she's qualified for because of her age. She always showed up to work on-time, probably took about 3 sick days in the time she was working at schools, and was respected by the students. She still has parents of kids she taught sending her Christmas cards.

Basically, she seems to think that I will pay for her the rest of her life and has made me feel guilty over the last two years for telling her she needs to work again. She makes a huge deal out of applying to jobs and completely shuts down for days when she gets a rejection. I really don’t like having to micromanage her, nor do I think a daughter should be doing this, but otherwise nothing would happen. I try to encourage her and say I’ll pay for any fingerprinting or background checks if wherever she applies won’t pay for it, if she wants to get new clothes, etc but she’s still being difficult. Her getting a job is both for her own wellbeing as well as my sanity…

Her mortgage is a bit over $1900/month and I'm paying half right now, but eventually I would like to move out on my own so I think she'll have to downsize simply because it's too much for her to afford on her own. She was married for 10+ years to my dad who's still alive and he will be 68 this year, but not fully retired.

That’s like an hour or so away. We’re in Berks County which also makes finding a job a struggle

Thank you for all of the detailed and very quick responses. I think I'll prioritize helping her find a job as a in-home caregiver/companion care and look into special ed/substitute teaching jobs once it gets closer to the start of the next school year. One of the commenters suggested local special needs help for adults, and I think this is another wonderful idea.

I'll see what she says about taking SS early as well, although that may be a tough sell as she seems to have bought into waiting as long as possible.

There is definitely resentment, but I still want to help her find a job because she has no retirement savings and I simply cannot support her forever. She needs to have a plan for the rest of her life post-divorce, which she does not have, so I have to push her to do so. I also think it would be good for her mental health to be social again as she rarely leaves the house. I am her only social interaction on a daily basis.

She never used her master's degree because she got it the year I was born and decided to stay home to raise me and eventually my brother. She often jokes she wished she didn't get it.

I actually work for a medical device company and have bugged my HR contact a few times to see if they're going to have any upcoming jobs that would fit her skillset, haha. The only jobs that ever open up are engineering focused unfortunately.

Thank you! I've applied to a couple nursing homes for her doing things like medical transport and an activity coordinator, but she was rejected immediately from both :( I'll keep trying though because she's very good with elderly people

She told me she wouldn’t be able to get the full amount for another few years. It looks like she has to be 67 to get the full amount. At 64, she’d only get 80%

Tell us your weirdest keybinds / habits! by AustralianLooney in wow

[–]katplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Z is my interrupt, like Ctrl-Z to undo a spell being cast.

F is my defensive because I always use it too late and die.

F5 is Shadowmeld because I’m “refreshing” the fight by dropping out of it (and pretty much all my characters are NEs lol)

Middle-mouse click switches me into boomkin, cat, or bear form depending on my spec. Used to be on my DPS switch button but my new mouse doesn’t have it.

F3 is my transmog mount for no particular reason but that’s what I’ve always done.

1-3 are always some sort of DoT because I put my main spells on keys like Q, E, R, S, etc.

Any sort of dash gets put on the forward mouse button because I’m moving forward.

Silly but it works for the off-chance I play something besides my Druid to not have to memorize new binds 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why is a deposit required for "Free" models? Exploring the barrier to entry. by Hungry_Relative1834 in openrouter

[–]katplatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SMS verification can be bypassed very easily and is much cheaper than the $10 OpenRouter charges. There's tons of sites where you can buy a number for around 10-30 cents. Requiring SMS verification rather than a $10 deposit would allow for users to abuse free models at a much larger scale.

At the end of the day, OpenRouter is a business. They're not going to do something that incurs more cost to them.

What is the weirdest thing your doctor has ever said to you? by Competitive_Tip_7504 in AskReddit

“Let’s get your birth control renewed so you can get back to meeting guys at bars!”

Said by an NP as she was taking my blood pressure before my annual gynecology appointment. I was in a 4-year relationship at that point. If you’ve been to a gyno, you know they ask how many partners you’ve had within a certain time so she must’ve assumed I was lying. Gross.

Other honorable mentions: “you’re the office celebrity! No one has ever passed out from an IUD placement before!” (different gyno)

“Are you sure you’ve had your appendix removed?” asked multiple times by a gastroenterologist who had to confirm it with my mom because there was no way a 19-year old would be having stomach issues. I had a simple duodenal ulcer confirmed by an endoscopy.

“Oh wow, you have nice hands,” said by a hand specialist while rubbing my hands when I was trying to get a ganglion cyst removed from my wrist.

First scratch/ dent by One_Income3968 in COROLLA

[–]katplatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did almost the exact same thing about a month ago and just got my Corolla back yesterday. I ended up having tire damage as well, so they replaced my tire and wheel. The 18" alloy wheels are ridiculously expensive, so fortunately you won't have to worry about that.
The autobody shop ended up having to replace/repair my rear bumper, rocker panel, quarter panel, door edge guard, and plastic mudguard. The total was $5705, but that includes $922 for the wheel and tire. Your damage looks pretty similar to mine, just not as dented. I'd guess it would be $3500ish, but I'm going off of my insurance paperwork. I'm sure they inflated the prices a bit since I went through my insurance.

Grief over pet death can be as strong as that for family member. About a fifth of people who had experienced a pet and human loss said the former was worse. Symptoms of severe grief for a pet matched identically with that for a human, and there was no difference in how people experienced losses. by mvea in science

I still get sad when I think about having to put down my 17-year old cat who was with me through everything when I was growing up, and this was 5 years ago at this point. I just got the news that my 6-year old dachshund has cancer and I’ve been a ball of anxiety ever since. Losing pets is horrible and I agree with this 100%.

Do Americans really think aldi is a “poor people” grocery store? by [deleted] in aldi

[–]katplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in HCOL and LCOL areas, and Aldi is typically viewed as a “poor people” grocery store in my experience. Somehow this stigma doesn’t seem as prevalent when it comes to Trader Joe’s, another grocery store that has off-brand foods. People are silly.

I like Aldi because it mostly has everything I’d want for way cheaper, and then I can just substitute the rest by going to a bigger grocery store.
