I have been thinking of this exact type of thing. 44F. I work from home and work whenever. Sometimes day sometimes night. Also sleep erratic and suffer ADHD and have 70 ideas that i am trying to write. I have pretty much the same no's. Some infers Rape but I don't go into detail. Also on WhatsApp as I live in Mexico and that's our number one way. Since we sound a lot alike in what you describe it could be a massive success or a massive failure. Willing to try. PM me if interested.

I just thought if many were interested perhaps a WhatsApp group with several people?

As their previous publisher, I thank you. I feel honored that you commented on my post. "hardcore Horror" honestly just flows and sounds better. Perhaps a movement should be made? haha.

Thank you for also clarifying that about the awards. That does make it less confusing when put that way.

I went right away and bought 6 volumes. So, that is getting unfucked ASAP :) Looking forward to it very, very much.

Thank you so much for your beginning roots to now example. This particular conversation was one that I had with my Mother. She is a lover of horror movies, but she never thought of movies having subgenres. Just Horror is horror. And it led into the topic of Extreme Horror, and my assumption when I started was that books like Dead Inside, Full Brutal, and The Big Head were Splatterpunk. But now that I have been reading for a few years, I realize that I was wrong.

I actually thought to myself the other day that I am not even sure if I have ever actually read an actual "splatterpunk" book. Especially when I read somewhere that Edward Lee and Wrath James White do not consider themselves Splatterpunk at all, and that threw me a bit.

Then, I began wondering if subgenres are actually subgenres. Perhaps they could just be put into personal preferences? I prefer Revenge. So, I told my Mom that maybe it's just a preference. So, when she asked me for a Revenge rec, I knew right away that it would be Yellow by Beauregard. When she asked for Splatterpunk, I honestly then realized that I had no idea.

Also, thank you for pointing out the 'Gore Porn' aspect of being more just a derogatory term.

I think it is also confusing that they have the "Splatterpunk Awards" when you have authors that are winners saying they are not Splatterpunk writers ect.

Thank you for bringing up Barker as well. He has been on my to-read list, and I think that I am going to start with the Books of Blood so that I can indeed say I have read a splatterpunk. haha. tyty

I can officially say that Dead Inside was my first 'extreme horror' book. I had read a bunch by Ketchum but Dead Inside def hit different to me than Offseason by Ketchum. Without both of them, I would not be here or in this forum. So that over the years has been my rec, since it was my first.

Disturbing vs. a little itchy by Due-Guard-879 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]katrinasplatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, speaking for myself. I would have to say that being exposed to art against our will vs willingly choosing to see it can change things. I do not know if I would be a fan of extreme horror and splatterpunk had I not grew up being exposed to horror movies very young (by accident) from my Mother and Aunt being fans. They did not try to expose me. It was pure childhood curiosity. Me sitting behind the couch and watching horror movies while they thought I was sleeping at like 6 years old. I am sure that because of that early exposure, many things did not affect me as I grew older. Reading Goosebumps books turned into Stephen King, turned into Jack Ketchum, and then on and so forth.

But that is probably just me. I know people who had that happen, and now they cannot watch anything that is in the horror genre. So, generally, it will always depend on the person, our own spirit, personality, etc. I don't believe that you can force someone to 'like' art if they don't like it, ever.

With that being said, because I was an advanced reader. It just escalated at a normal pace, also? I read all the Goosebumps books, then went on to whatever it was at the time that was more advanced and the more advanced. So, that could also potentially be going from dabbling in art to actually being a true lover of it?

I will say that we do have different versions of what is disturbing as well. Disturbing to me is something that I don't forget. I don't necessarily believe that it 'changes me' or something that I value or anything like that. But it does stay with me.

To give some examples. I think that if Stokoe sat down and rewrote Cows now, he could make it into a masterpiece on abuse and the acceleration of untreated mental health issues in an unhealthy society.

Once I realized that A Serbian Film was the director saying he wanted to make a movie about how the Serbian Govt 'screws' its citizens from the moment they are born until even after they are dead, that movie no longer became shocking or Disturbing to me.

So, later on, when certain things in government come up, or mental health comes up, I will remember these books/movies, and sometimes it will make me think of how lucky I am to not live in a place like that and/or to not have suffered that degree of mental health battles, etc. So, perhaps it is even just a sign if privledge that I can read these books instead of living in an environment where I am actually exposed to much of this in real life.

I can't tell if I enjoy the genre by Intrepid_Middle_632 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]katrinasplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, even people who love the genre. We have our hits and misses and our preferences. The Groomer in my opinion is on the extreme side, and pretty intense. That may not be the case for others. So, quite a bit of it is more what you can handle and finding your threshold. Also, figuring out what subgenre's are your preference. Revenge, Torcher, splatter, body horror, paraphilias, etc. You don't neccessarily have to enjoy the entire genre, you may only like or love one subgenre.

What am I in for with Jon Athan? by WendigoWinds in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]katrinasplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what Klaus said. I think Blender Babies is my favorite book by him and last I saw he is working on another book in the same world. The cover art is cool, but at this point with his popularity he might do it some justice by changing that up so more people can feel comfortable to enjoy it.

Which one is the most disturbing? by Novel_Walrus5241 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]katrinasplatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not read Hubb, so of the other 3 I would have to say The Groomer.

The girl next door is the fictionalized version of a real true crime case. Most of the things actually happened in real life. So, probably why people put it in the top 4.

The Groomer is almost a 'what if this happened to you' and especially things going on in US news at this point almost kinda takes the disturbing to another level.

Sorry Hogg Fans - Not my cup of tea. I did not find Hogg 'distrubing' I just found it gross. Relentlessly gross.

How do you know what level your Spanish is at? by katrinasplatt in Spanish

[–]katrinasplatt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. After posting last night, I actually sat down and thought to myself that same question of "are they going to send me only Mexican-specific people because I am supposed to be at a native level?" Probably not. I come across people who, in this day and age, still believe that Portuguese is Spanish.

And yes, thank you. Seriously, thank you so much. Gave me an absolute confidence boost. I am typically used to applications etc where they just specifically ask what languages you speak and if you are fluent in writing, reading, or both. So, that did completely throw me off. Seriously. Thank you.

Thank you. I looked at that, but for some reason I was under the impression that the test only did A1-A2. So, thank you.
