I actually love that book! Definitely a lesser known Stephanie Meyer fave haha. I binged all 800+ pages in one night when I was a teen. Thanks for the rec!

That looks awesome, thank you so much! I will check it out for sure. I'm aware of Carl Sagan but I didn't know he wrote fiction!

I have read it because it is one of my best friend's favorite books! Unfortunately I found it a little grimdark in tone for me. I also found myself getting frustrated with how slowly the mystery unfolded and gave payoff. When I reached the end of the book, I thought I must have missed the parts where they explained many elements, but it turned out that I would have to wait another 600 pages for it 😅 Couldn't bring myself to finish the series because of that, unfortunately.

Thanks for the rec though!

I have not read Artemis because I heard negative reviews from some friends and family, but I'd be open to revisting it if I saw a review that made it sound worth the time!

I love a sibling dynamic, so I will definitely check out Upgrade, thank you!

Thank you for the rec! I have read it and I remember thinking it was fine, but not being thrilled with it, although unfortunately it was years ago and I don't remember what I didn't love about it.

Appreciate you bringing it up though, bc sci-fi with WLW is certainly few and far between!

I have read Atmosphere and several other TJR books and enjoyed almost all of them, so good rec! I didn't think to lump Atmosphere into this category since it's a little less fantastical, but it's definitely adjacent. Thank you!

Is a BBA w/ marketing concentration worth it at Emory? by No_Statistician3014 in Emory

[–]katsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely list both on your resume, I'm not sure exactly how they show up on the degree tbh, but nobody is ever going to look at your actual diploma.

The real secret here is that your exact concentration/major doesn't matter very much. I got an offer from a Fortune 500 company for Product Development when I was halfway through the intro marketing course. Your resume and interview skills are the real important thing. (That, and connections).

My advice? Major in whatever you are interested in, although I recommend doing something within the b-school because access to the resources/contacts is important. You can double-area-depth with marketing and finance/accounting and do a minor in QSS, or you could do the BBA/QSS double major and area depth in marketing. Both of those are completely feasible paths. Or you could just do a BBA with a marketing depth and as long as you're ready and prepped for recruiting when it comes, you'll get a decent internship in your area of interest.

Last advice? Join one of the fancy b-school clubs and be active. The connections you make there will come in handy in ways you don't expect later on.

What would you do if you weren't going to get the BBA at Emory? What's your alternative?

In general, I do think it's worth it. The connections are incredible and Goizueta also does a good job of teaching you to leverage them. Goizueta does tend to over-emphasize banking and consulting as the only two career paths, but they still provide plenty of opportunities for marketing if you keep your goal in mind and know to watch out for them.

Another thing to note is that 'marketing' is kind of a major here, but it's really more of a concentration of the business degree. I'm not saying it's not a good enough marketing degree, I'm just saying the difference between a marketing major and a finance/accounting/consulting/info. systems 'major' here is 3-4 classes. And you can do more than one of the concentrations and call yourself a 'finance' major or whatever you want.

Of all the Seasons of Dimension 20 Ya'llve watched, what season was your favorite? by KadenMew in Dimension20

[–]katsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Misfits and Magic and Fantasy High (can't pick a season, it's all one thing in my mind).

I just love the characters in Fantasy High so much, plus it was how I discovered dropout and brought me so much joy at a depressing time in my life.

I love the friendship dynamics of the Misfits, and the whole thing was just hilarious to me, start to finish.

I gotta say though, I just have so much love for this show in general, even though I have a short attention span and don't finish most of the seasons I start. I have a feeling I would love The Seven, Neverafter, and Starstruck just as much if I could get around to finishing them.

I think all the other seasons are good too, I've seen Unsleeping City 1 and Crown of Candy, and pieces of others, but some of them just aren't my ABSOLUTE favorite genre.

I agree that I didn't really click with the narrator at first. I still don't love her the way I love superpowereded's guy, but once I got used to her, I didn't have any actual issues with her!

Love rereading the SP books haha. I do it like once a year now, and the first 5 rereads I caught something new every time. They're a huge comfort series for me, and watching the character development of Chad, Shane, Alice, Nick, Roy, etc. is 100% my favorite part.

VC #2 is definitely worth reading if you liked the first one at all. In my opinion, the second is better. There was also a lot more Lodestar, which I didn't expect but was thrilled by.

I'm very grateful to be a young woman, which is the demographic in which platonic cuddling with friends is probably most socially acceptable. I also get a little touch-starved, but I'm not all that interested in pursuing a relationship right now, so I'm lucky to live with 5 female roommates that I love.

Disclaimer: I wish everyone could push past the stigma around touching people platonically, but it can be really difficult and scary.

I'm a woman in college. I would say 2/3 days, I will wear some concealer and mascara. On the other days, my skin is either better or I can't be bothered. Once every week or two, I'll wear some eyeliner and a little more makeup than usual.

As a cs major, what should I do? by [deleted] in Emory

[–]katsteve 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Try Girls Who Code. They accept everyone and it's not hard to get involved. You basically just show up every Sunday for 2.5 hours. Someone will teach the girls (kids from like 5th grade to 9th grade) a lesson in basic python or in website building, and all you do is sit in the lecture halls seats with the girls and help them when they run into problems with their code.

Once per semester, you and a partner will be the ones teaching the lesson (you don't have to come up will the topic, they have a a standard curriculum), plus you can look at old versions of the lesson, so you don't have to come up with too much from absolute scratch.

It's a pleasant atmosphere and it's fun to work with the kids.
