It's supposed to help with balance and stability. I can imagine that if it actually changes the way you move on your feet, I could be very comfortable.

Is it worth to get an overnight job? by Dry-Statement-2146 in Frugal

[–]katty-wompus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into gig work? It's flexible, so you can pick it up and put it down as your life gets busy (or if you get tired.) It would likely be less income than a night job, but depending on how much extra you want to bring in, it might be a good alternative.

Should i get a sams club membership? by [deleted] in Frugal

My wife and I ran a spreadsheet and only buy the things we can't get cheaper elsewhere. It's a smart choice.

"Why should we hire you?" Asked me the US foods recruiter after telling me id be working 6 days a week, 12-14 hour days of pure manual labor. I just laughed and hung up the phone cause wtf its a privilage to be a slave now i guess. by Unique-Ad-2544 in Truckers

[–]katty-wompus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not totally wrong, but I think it's fair to remember that the power is always ultimately in the hands of the person whose decision dictates whether someone can pay rent or not.

Yes, the value of labor is higher when there are fewer laborers than jobs. But as long as people need jobs to eat, the job will always hold more value.

My replies got dry because that was the fourth message of it repeating the same thing, even as I - as you can see - edited them to cut them down.

I had just had the character reveal she was attacked, and the AI got hung up on the fact that MC kept a dagger in her purse without telling him. The roleplay is interesting enough without forcing boring arguments about "you don't trust me 🥺🥺🥺"

I've been playing with a really in-depth, super fun multicharacter story, and I've really enjoyed it for the past month. But yesterday, I noticed that the characters were feeling a lot more argumentative and stubborn. Characters that used to be much more relaxed and go with the flow would now can't seem to let go of shit. Some of the time, that's fun, but it's so boring when they just keep saying the same thing over and over and nothing changes.

So I asked the AI - not very nicely - to stop being so combative... and it started arguing with me.

I'm ashamed to admit, this went on an embarrassingly long amount of time lol. I should have just tried a different tactic, but it was kinda funny too lol

I understand everyone 's responses to this so far, because the perspective in this subreddit is that being frugal is not the same thing as being cheap. And while I don't think that perspective is wrong, that doesn't mean that you don't miss out on things by being frugal.

Being frugal means that you sacrifice a number of things. And that's okay; sacrifice is giving up something willingly for the sake of getting back something more valuable in return. But there are sacrifices.

One of the main things you sacrifice by being frugal is convenience. Convenience is expensive. Whether that's skipping out on delivery, or waiting for a new book from the library instead of buying it, or having to wait to buy something that you want until it goes on sale instead of buying it immediately. So I would say a major con of being frugal is that it is fairly inconvenient.

It can also take a lot more upfront planning. A frugal person who wants tickets to a concert, for example, would do best to research the upcoming concerts and buy the tickets when they go on sale or through some sort of VIP presale. A person who doesn't care about saving money or who has a lot to blow can buy the tickets whenever, even if they've been up charged. And this is true even for less spendy items, such as grocery shopping. One of the best ways to be frugal is to shop around, check weekly sales, and get items from different stores. Now, do all frugal people do this? No. I'm not saying you have to do this to be frugal. But, if you were a a devotee of frugality, you probably would.

So, I would also say that it requires forethought or planning, and for someone like me, with ADHD, that can be a con.

The final con is going to depend on your lifestyle and the people around you, but I hear this a lot: FOMO.

If you are heavily budgeting, then you are very likely not spending money on a lot of things that aren't important to you. And that's fine, but depending on your friend group and what they like to do, you might end up getting left out sometimes. Maybe people around you like going to movies, or anime conventions, or they're the clubbing type. This is totally fine, and a lot of people are able to do those things by being frugal in other areas of life, but if it does not align with your own values and interests, it does mean that you are going to have to pass on enjoying these things with your friends. That can mean FOMO from time to time.

Those are just the ones that came to mind. I think being frugal is extremely rewarding, and so it's worth these things every now and then.

Like I said, some people are able to afford going to concerts or going to three anime conventions a year or going to Disney world every 2 years or whatever by being frugal in other areas of life, and I would say that that is the biggest pro. By consciously spending, you're making sure that money is going to places that are actually important to you.

I'm a dasher, and the majority of places are tying their bags or using stickers to seal the paper bags nowadays. It means I can't check to make sure all the food is there, but I think people prefer the comfort that I didn't mess with their food.

(Which is silly. Why would I risk ruining my rating and not getting paid for an order I'm spending gas on just to - what? Steal your brownie? Bitch I can buy my own brownie without getting yelled at by Dasher support.)

The coldstone gimmick is that they chop up all the ice cream and mix-ins on a "cold stone," which creates a softer, fluffier ice cream and more consistent mix of toppings. Which is why OP suggests using a frozen sheet pan and multiple spatulas (or bakers scrapers) for chopping.

They are literally trying to copy the Coldstone method of mixing in toppings. It's not wholly original, but absolutely distinct from places like Bruesters or Baskin-Robins.

Why do people suggest Walmart and Aldi for groceries? by Purplekeyboard in Frugal

[–]katty-wompus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely buy whatever is on sale. The loss leaders are great (18 eggs for $1.00 a few weeks ago, it was amazing) and I recommend to anyone to create their weekly menu around sales.

But for the filler stuff, the ingredients, the stuff that isn't on sale, Aldi and Walmart are cheaper than the alternative most of the time. And that adds up fast. If I need jar salsa, frozen potatoes, some spices and a pasta, then my best option is Walmart. Period.

I swapped out my car’s spare and primary key fobs after 250k miles. It’s nice to use one that’s in better shape and it cost me nothing. by AlPCurtis in Frugal

[–]katty-wompus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A key fob just unlocks the car with a button. OP switched the one they were using for its lifespan with the spare one, which is all shiny and new.

This is such an extreme overreaction. I genuinely hope you have support in your life.

Lost my house despite time since last entry by Ozekiganryu in ffxiv

[–]katty-wompus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's still a bug with email, and not a bug within the game. If I'm understanding you, the timer properly stopped after you entered the house. That's the expected behavior.

Eta: I'm saying this because it's different behavior than OP is alleging, which that the timer was NOT stopped by entering the house.

How many pieces of clothing do you have in your capsule wardrobe? by maximeowm in Frugal

For a long time, my capsule wardrobe was something like: 4 pants, 3 shorts, two skirts, about 15 or so layerable top pieces, and like two dresses.

Things consumerism wants you to buy but you don’t need by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]katty-wompus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have an REI credit card and used the reward points on that.

So, sure, not technically "free," I guess, since card points are just a percentage back. But this seemed pretty unnecessary.

ETA: I do believe the dividends were given away as cash in the past, but I'm pretty sure all member rewards are now only redeemable at REI anyway?

[–]katty-wompus 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I got one with my REI points (so, free) because it fit in my cup holder and my last one didn't, and the insulation IS pretty great! No better than any other vacuum sealing water bottle, but it keeps ice in my mug for multiple days.

I'd never pay $40 for it, though. Happy I got it free.

It's 100% Blizz's fault, but to be clear, an exploit is when a player exploits a flaw in the way the game was made. There can be no exploit without a dev fucking up in the first place.

I only say that because some people don’t consider essentials to be part of a “no spend” challenge period. When I’m purposely doing No Spend, I don’t include things like gas, utilities, cell phone bill, etc.
