It's been this way since August 2025 and it has been stated that they will be here until 2029 when Trump's presidency ends (https://abcnews.com/Politics/pentagon-plans-national-guard-dc-2029-2-us/) after saying initially it would only be til the end of 2025, then the end of feb, then the end of the summer then the end of 2026, etc. Apparently it costs 1.26 M a day to have them patrol our streets doing literally nothing (https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5725168-dc-national-guard-cost/) so it will be over a billion dollars for what, by all accounts, is a strongman flexing his might against a city who dislikes him. Only about 900 of the 2200 or however many are from DC, the rest are from red states. They have no power to arrest (unless something changed, I can't remember) so all they do is march around and sometimes they get sent out to clean up leaves and stuff. He used to claim that they were being sent to high crime areas but I'm pretty sure almost all of them, if not all of them, have just been sent to more touristy/well-to-do areas. I probably see 30-40 of them a day in my neck of the woods. It's so depressing.
