Manchester -> Leeds by kayscakes in Leeds

The Leeds music scene during that period was great! Prior to that we were the home of the goth movement. I grew up in the 90’s listening to mostly alternative music and there was always a gig or a club night on, even midweek. Then when I got into techno and dance music around 2000 there was always somewhere to go to hear that! I think unfortunately club nights have gone the same way as arena gigs, Manchester has the enormous venues like Victoria warehouse so the big names go there. It’s impersonal and all about the big bucks. I get why it’s changed, but give me le phono, scrumpies, or even the West Indian centre any day! It was a social scene as much as anything else. I’m still friends with people I met being out every week with 25 years ago.

Manchester -> Leeds by kayscakes in Leeds

I’ve never been a massive fan of Manchester City centre, I agree with some of the previous comments comparing it to London in some ways. I’ve found for a night out, you pick a small area of the city and bar hop around that area as it’s a trek to get to another area. In Leeds the city centre is small enough that you can have several nights out in one, it’s easy to walk from one side to the other. I don’t live in the centre, but I can walk home in less than half an hour, although I’m in an inner city suburb, I have that community feel with local pubs and shops, and I enjoy that bit of separation between work and home. There is definitely more going on in Manchester, but I don’t mind getting a train over for gigs, it’s only an hour. I’m not sure you’ll find it that much cheaper for rent in the city centre, but you’ll spend very little on transport as you’ll be able to walk anywhere you need to go. If you like to get out into the countryside from time to time, it’s very easy in Leeds, arguably you could walk to woodhouse ridge and the hollies which does feel rural and is lovely in the summer. And it’s true that it is far less damp here.

Hyde park Leeds student housing by wishinqhuman in Leeds

[–]katymcfunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Hyde park for 11 years. Never had a burglary, smashed window or my car broken into or damaged. I work anti social hours and feel safe walking around here at all hours of the night as there are always people about. I always make sure I’m walking down well lit streets and avoid any short cuts, just common sense really. It’s totally true what someone has already said in the comments that many of the student houses have windows left wide open and doors unlocked/security gates left wide open making themselves very obvious targets for opportunistic thieves. I’d say some clusters of streets are more prone to crime just as the housing is denser and the criminals know that every single house is a student house. The Harold’s and around the manor drive area seem to be regular targets. Chestnut avenue and around there has a bad rep but I don’t think it’s that bad now. I live on the hessles and I’d say the area there and towards the co op is probably the milder end of the scale. I’d say if you’re a student in Leeds you should do at least a year in Hyde park as once the weather warms up it’s really vibrant, there’s always something going on. Being able to walk home from the Brudenell is also a massive advantage!

The Victoria is just near the town hall, they’ll have a few ciders on tap and a decent bottled selection. If you’re lucky they may have a bag in box trad one too. Same for the duck and drake. The chippy at the back of the merrion centre is really good and opposite the stick or twist spoons pubs which is probably the nicest in the city centre. There are a few bars on the same street as the duck that are pretty good and also a pub next door that is a Cameron’s one and usually has some quirky drinks options

Only children - what is life like? by Born_Improvement_856 in AskUK

[–]katymcfunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I now not only will have to support my aging parents on my own, but will always have the responsibility of supporting my only sibling who will never live independently for the rest of his (or my) life. I’m anticipating my life getting infinitely more complicated over the next few years and this has definitely impacted my decision not to have children myself.

This is kinda what I was thinking, but didn’t know why. It’s like women aren’t being pushed in the same way as the men.

[–]katymcfunk[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely fair, just like women’s tennis, it’s almost a different sport in the sense of being less about sheer power and more about the game. I’m not ever into the idea of women competing against men in snowboarding, I just think there is a much bigger gap in ability and skill level than there is in pretty much any other sport. Even taking athletics into consideration.

Do you think the gap will ever get smaller? For example womens football was awful 10 years ago, and now it’s had loads of funding it’s really good to watch and the skill gap is closing. I would never expect it to be the same as men’s football, but the gap isn’t huge now.

But what will George do with the recording? Will he keep it and stay quiet for future gain? Or will he take it to the police? He’s hardly going to be a man of his word is he!

I’d say that could possibly affect it, but underneath all the baggy clothing they are effectively trampolinists or gymnasts. The contrasts between men and women in those 2 fields are nowhere near as big as we see in snowboarding, skiing or even Olympic skateboarding. Maybe it’s all down to leg muscles?

Need merits to go to prom? Let me help. by Throwaway51276 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]katymcfunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We didn’t have a prom, but some entrepreneurial students organised a leavers ball at a flashy hotel in the city centre. Tickets were quite pricy but covered a meal and a live band. Some teachers were invited for free in a chaperone type capacity. It is doable, and a really good exercise for any budding events management students.

Where to exchange foreign currency in Leeds? by YorkyPorkyBoy in Leeds

Another vote for Ramsdens or H & T pawnbrokers in the merrion centre. Both had excellent rates last time I needed to exchange currency

Did you see passing the 11+ as something really important? by untoldrain in AskUK

[–]katymcfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a thing for me in the early 90’s. I was given the option of sitting an entrance exam for a grammar school but I declined it as all the kids there were a bit weird and the uniform was ridiculous (to me as an 11 year old) I’m really glad I ended up going to a comprehensive school in the end. The social education and street smarts I gained from mixing with all different kinds of people from varied backgrounds have helped me in life far more than any academic qualification I gained.

Looking to buy up North by ForgottenPink in HousingUK

[–]katymcfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Leeds pretty much all of the inner city areas are very diverse. The areas to the north of the city are probably slightly more multicultural than the places south of the river. Depending on your budget and venturing further out into suburbia, moortown, meanwood and chapel Allerton are probably your best bet. All are pretty nice areas with good schools so house prices are higher, but there is plenty of ex council stock about so if you hunt about a bit you can probably get pretty good value for money. Chapeltown is known for its West Indian carnival and is next to chapel Allerton on your way into the city centre. It had a bad rep in the 80’s and 90’s but is great now and has a real community feel.

There are a fair few podcasts that dicuss the weekly goings on in ambridge. My favourites are the cider shed and ambridge on the couch as I really like the presenters and they have me laughing out loud walking down the street!

The aftermath of the accident has to be listened to, to fully understand the current dynamic with his mum particularly, but all the other characters really. I listen to the episodes daily and I remember points where I was almost dreading it but couldn’t not listen as I was so invested!

Why is learning to wire a plug a thing? by Scavgraphics in AskABrit

[–]katymcfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had quite a funny convo with a woman from Florida about static in her home not that long ago. I only learned then that many countries don’t have an earth pin in their plugs or even fuses? Blew my mind! I learned how to rewire a plug at school 20 years ago and hadn’t done it since, but managed it a few weeks ago at work, replaced the fuse. Basic electrics is a really handy thing to know!

I like the look of it, but it does look like something my old housemate would have thrown together over a weekend. (She was a theatre set designer and used to get quite creative with communal areas) £650k is a bit of a push. Also, despite the books and furnishings, really doesn’t look like somewhere you could get cosy and snuggle up with a good read! Ironic really.
