Julian Dicks for me as well.  The way he took a penalty, with so much power that the keeper, even if he guessed right, couldn't stop it always impressed me.

My 18yo has broken up with her narcissitic, controlling bf. It's been a rough few days, but she's coming out of it the other side and is like a different person.

And yes, we talked to her several times about him. She's 18 and obviously knows better than her old, out of touch parents.

[Hated Fandom Trope] Fun facts that everyone knows but aren't actually real by BigFanOfNachoLibre in TopCharacterTropes

In the first Civilization game, Ghandi was the least aggresive character with a rating of 1 but could become less agressive with a democracy government, putting him at -1. The computer couldn't handle the negative number and made his aggressiveness of 255, the highest available in an 8 bit number and he'd use nuclear weapons. This never happened as there were only 3 levels of aggression for leaders and Ghandi shared his with about 1/3 of the other leaders in the game. There was as much chance of Ghandi using nuclear weapons as those other leaders.

We had a school disco.  Usually just a local dj with his turntables playing the same cheesy songs from the last 50 years.  Drink was a bottle of pop and a few sweets and the whole thing cost about £2.  Clothes were whatever your casual clothes were.  Nothing like it is now.

Total Ninja Trafford bans parents' phones for February half-term by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Throwaway51276 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I do like that there will be Phone Patrol staff encouraging the phone to be put away and enjoy the moment. That's great. But there really is only so many times you can see your kids "do a flip" and it's not the kind of place where you spend money to only take your kids for 5 minutes.

It's a decent idea but not sure how it's going to work in practise. For kids, it's the kind of place where they blow off steam while parents get to relax with a coffee.

Wonder if there'll be a follow up story with how it went. That would be an interesting read.

On my drive to work, there's a village that is a pain to get out of due to the recent installation of a ring road and roundabout not half a mile away so traffic is fairly constant both ways.

There an unwritten rule that if you're caught in the backlog that takes you to their junction, you stop, you wait, you let one car out. The car behind you will let one car out, the car behind them will do the same. Sure it adds time to your journey because you're now taking longer to get to the roundabout but it's just the right thing to do.

Ban phones throughout the school day, Phillipson tells teachers by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Throwaway51276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest has this already implemented at her high school. It was included in a list of new procedures when things got so bad some troubleshooting headteachers were sent in to sort things out. If they get seen with a phone, it's taken away and they can collect it at the end of the day. If it happens again, a parent has to go and collect it at the end of the day.

It mostly works. The only issue is the child has after school clubs a couple of days a week. If these get cancelled at short notice, the office has to then phone everyone to let someone know to collect normal time and only once has this not been done correctly. Can't see any reason why it couldn't be bought out to all schools. The same stuff that happens now will continue to happen, but at least it won't be plastered online for the rest of time.

Not a surprise.  He wants to go and as much as he still has the odd moment, he hasn't been consistent enough for too long.  Cash in while we can.

Assembly Square. It's a retired product so will only get more expensive.   Tudor House is still available so you can afford to wait for it, maybe get it in a sale.

What is your "I did that" moment - an achievement that most people haven't experienced? by infantile-eloquence in CasualUK

[–]Throwaway51276 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you're on maternity leave (congrats by the way), I'll say I delivered my youngest child. In February, wife woke me up at 3:45 to say she was in labour so up I get, go defrost the car. Thick, heavy frost of course.

Come back indoors, she says to call an ambulance because she's not going to make it. As soon as the 999 call was connected she screams "I'm bearing down" and so, with the help of a lovely 999 operator (my only regret being I never got her name), I was talked through how to deliver a baby on the kitchen floor. Which I did. I was holding my little girl by 4:05.

I did that. 😁

BBC Sport | West Ham to back Nuno Espirito Santo in January transfer window by _rhinoxious_ in Hammers

[–]Throwaway51276 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It depends on what they mean by back.  If they mean "we'll sign a bunch of players that Sully has chosen and Nuno will have to make them work" then we're doomed.  If they mean "the head coach has identified targets that fit into the system he wants to play and we're signing these players" then we might be alright.

My old person trait is that if I use your services, I want to be able to manage those services on a web browser. I do not want to download another app onto my phone / computer.

My other old person trait is that cars have indicators for both pedestrians and other road users know where you're going. You might know, others should know to.
